@GnomeSlice The irony is delicious.

(so anybody up for actually playing Borderlands?)

@badp Oh! If I wasnt at work Id jump on that!

@badp Is this your first time playing through?

yes

Grrrr so close to capping the past 3 days.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite infects most genera of warm-blooded animals, including humans, but the primary host is the felid (cat) family. Animals are infected by eating infected meat, by ingestion of feces of a cat that has itself recently been infected, or by transmission from mother to fetus. Cats are the primary source of infection to human hosts, although contact with raw meat, especially pork, is a more significant source of human infections in some countries. Fecal contamination of hands is a significant risk factor. ...

SE should consider fixing their broken regex so it doesn't break on https

@Wipqozn Did you eat cat poop again?

@Ullallulloo My cats don't eat poop.
They're not dogs.
Cats are much more stuck-up.

@Wipqozn My dog eats poop.

9:10 PM
Hello, everybody.

@Wipqozn Reread what I said.

@Ullallulloo Zeus dammit.

> Animals are infected by eating infected meat, by ingestion of feces of a cat that has itself recently been infected, or by transmission from mother to fetus. Because I can't seem to find it myself, and it may be a waste of time to post a question, does anyone know the GW2 release date, if it's been officially stated at all?

user2334
By Odin's beard!

9:11 PM
@Snowflake 2012.

Good enough for me.

It'd suck if it came in 2013.

user2334
@Snowflake No specific date announced yet

Okay, cool. Thanks guys.
Guess I'll have to go and finally buy GW1 :o

9:12 PM
@Wipqozn So...is that a yes?

@Snowflake Diablo 3 comes out in 54 days, 9 hours, 47 minutes, and 14 seconds.

@Snowflake It would be a waste to ask as a question. Questions about release dates are off-topic.

If you want to wait.

@Ullallulloo Maybe.
It's just so tasty!

@StrixVaria I don't know if I want Diablo 3 or not. It's obviously going to be really good, but I heard that you have to play with an internet connection 24/7 in order to play it at all.

9:14 PM
@Snowflake Get it for console?

Personally, I think you should be able to make an offline profile for single player, and an online for both.

@Wipqozn Cmon man. Eris is way more fun and is a colossal troll.

@Tristan When you load it does it ask if you want to start the trial?

Probably what I'll do.

@Ullallulloo I do not own one, I sold my xbox for my PC. Plus I only play games (Barring exclusives) on Pc.

9:14 PM
@Snowflake I heard this too, but I'm never not connected to the Internet anyway, and I wouldn't play offline even if there were that option, so that doesn't faze me for an instant.

@StrixVaria It wouldn't bother me either, but I do a lot of travelling when it gets towards the summer. :/

@Snowflake That reminds me, I'm not going to be able to play D3 when I go on vacation panics

You should take a vacation to play D3, then.

@TimStone Where have you been?

I just had a problem with the Windows 7 weather gadget, so I Googled for the cache location, and I was the top hit. :P

9:16 PM
@StrixVaria Heh. My travelling is for work.

Pretending to work.

I already have the week of May 15th approved off of work.

Ah, you're many steps ahead of me, then.

@OrigamiRobot But that's not the inside joke my friend and I started.

I only took time off for Skyrim. I got bored of it 300 hours in, though.

9:17 PM
@Snowflake Diablo series > Elder Scrolls series, for me.
Although I do like Elder Scrolls.

I agree.

I missed out on sleep to play that series, but I didn't actually take days off for it.

@Wipqozn Eris is such a troll, she caused people to start the Trojan War.
You would love her.

I will never play GW2, unfortunately.
Diablo 3 will trump every other game for the foreseeable future.

@StrixVaria I was about to say "Why?", but I get it now. :P

9:19 PM
@StrixVaria This makes me sad because I want to play GW2.

@OrigamiRobot Me too.
Obviously.

Do you have to pay monthly for Diablo? (new to the series, sorry)

@JuanManuel No.

Diablo's jump to 3D kinda threw me off, but I pretty much saw it coming.

@JuanManuel It's not an MMO.

9:20 PM
great

I would have never gotten into it in the first place if you did.

@StrixVaria It's why I never got into WoW
despite all the fuss around it :)

I spend so much time on D1 and D2, have to play D3

It would have been nice if it had really great 2D graphics instead (To me.) but that's just because I got tired of that style of graphics after so much "FATE" playing.

Convincing my parents to pay a monthly fee to play a game would have been like trying to pick up the sun.

Q: Cerberus Network DLC not detecting ME2

OnarikI bought ME2 recently on Steam and activated the Cerberus network DLC. The files it gave me to download don't detect ME2 as being downloaded. Anyone able to help with this?

Q: Does scanning planets attract reaper attention?

Ronan FormanI know that using the scan on the galaxy map will attract reaper attention, but is it also true for the planet part (where you launch the probe)? Basically do I have to rush this bit or can I take my time when finding all the loot?

@JuanManuel That's the reason that I did play Guild Wars.

I tried WoW on a friend's account.
I didn't like it.
Too passive.
Choose target, wait.

@StrixVaria I played a free pass once, didn't either

Yes, that's precisely the case with me.

Press some buttons, but mostly wait.

9:22 PM
Not really much strategy involved, just telling your friends what to attack and what buttons to press.

"This last challenge?" This seemed like a sidequest of a sidequest of a sidequest

I liked playing WoW, but it took to much of my time

But because it's that type of MMO, it doesn't need strategy.

I'm disappoint. Goes on more side challenges

So... I was finally able to... activate my... real mass effect 3 copy... cough, so I will be able to play multiplayer at last...
I don't have any friends though :(

9:24 PM
Yay! One more question. Thanks @Blem!

if anyone wants to play sometime, let me know

@RonanForman no problem, always glad to help :)

@AshleyNunn How did you get Green!!??

@JuanManuel you should read my question about solo'ing multiplayer then. we can be loners, together, but not really cause that would make us not loners

Why would you edit the answer on a dupe...

9:25 PM
@James green?

user15026
@James ?

@agent86 but I do want to play with people sometime :)

...and the "last piece of the puzzle" mission is level 27? I must be missing something

No idea how it works though, will know tonight

@AshleyNunn In draw something, I just have black red blue and yellow..

9:26 PM
Exactly 4.7 megaseconds until Diablo 3!
Every 100 kiloseconds is lasting a lifetime.

@StrixVaria Need to find a place to order D3:CE soon

@OrigamiRobot Why not?

user15026
@James I bought it with coins - I paid for the full version, so you start with more coins so you can buy colours and bombs

user15026
@StrixVaria What is a megasecond?

Old Haven up next.

9:27 PM
@AshleyNunn Oh.. Ill have to look into that, green would be awesome!

@AshleyNunn A megasecond (symbol: Ms) is 1 million seconds, or roughly 11.6 days. There are roughly 31.5 megaseconds in a year. This page lists times between 1 and 1000 megaseconds (106 seconds and 109 seconds), or 11.6 days and 31.7 years.

user15026
@James Yeah, I needed purple at some point, so that is what prompted me to purchase some colours

@Wipqozn You programmed me to question things.

I just did all the calculations in my head!

user15026
Because drawing an eggplant without any purple is just impossible

9:28 PM
Also, I lie a lot
A megasecond (symbol: Ms) is 1 million seconds, or roughly 11.6 days. There are roughly 31.5 megaseconds in a year. user15026
@JuanManuel Hm. Now I know. :)

ooooh, my first orange gun

@AshleyNunn & @James, I'm now tmslft on Draw Something if you want to help me avoid doing work. :P

...a repeater T_T
no wait, SMG. Cool.

9:29 PM
@badp T_T

user15026
@TimStone I will add you as soon as class is over

WTH, I was supposed to draw the statue of liberty @Ullallulloo.

@badp ooo which one?

I'm taking a stand against stupid minutes and hours.

"KKA32 COMBUSTION HELLFIRE"

9:30 PM
Hectoseconds, kiloseconds, and megaseconds are much more useful.
And normal.

56 dam, 83.3 acc, 6.9 firerate, fire x4

@badp holy%$^! That is one of/the best SMGs. I hope you're built for Elemental damage. That thing burns with like every single shot

Days and years have useful definitions, so those can stay around for now.

but it does less damage than my current SMG :(

Are any administrators online right now that know how the website works?

9:31 PM
and fires slower and less accurately

No it doesn't! You have to see the elemental effect in action

@Snowflake This website?

the fire will do more damage than the bullets

@StrixVaria Yes.

A lot of us know how it works, despite not being administrators.

9:32 PM
Oh well. So long, then, malevolent stinger.

@badp well, try it out, Stingers can be good for sniping-smgs

or I could equip instead of this useless pistol.

I'm having a technical problem.
I'll ask a question on it.

I found a stinger with near 100% accuracy and 16.9 RoF

@Snowflake On meta.

user15026
9:32 PM
@TimStone You should be pleased - I procrastinated in class so you could procrastinate at work XD

@Snowflake Ask on meta.

What's that?

btw what does "built for elemental damage" means?

9:33 PM
Oh

Questions about the site, rather than questions about gaming.

Thanks/

for more general engine problems

@Ullallulloo That's for cars.stackexchange

9:34 PM
mechanics

@Ullallulloo same same

@Ullallulloo You're a real artist. :D

@AshleyNunn Hooray! \o/

@RonanForman It says "Enter Serial" or "Continue Trial"

@TimStone game sent

9:41 PM
@AshleyNunn I'm getting better at this drawing on my phone business.

Try drawing on a Fire. Doesn't work well.

user15026
@Tristan Hurray! It does take a bit, doesn't it? XD I mean I can't draw on the best of days, but holy crap, this felt worse then fingerpainting, because no one had to guess what those were. XD But I am also improving :)

@Snowflake I don't understand the concept of an e-book-reader that doesn't use e-ink.
It defeats the whole purpose of the device.

user15026
We are talking about breadcrumbs in my technical communication class. It is making me hungry.

9:43 PM
I don't, either.
Which is why I'm using it as a cheap tablet.

user15026
@StrixVaria That is kinda my thought.

Someone on gamedev.SE just told me that C/C++'s fwrite() and fread() are not platform-independent.

And for that purpose, it's performed perfectly for me.

@Snowflake Fair enough.

@Snowflake The Fire is supposed to be a tablet, I thought.

9:44 PM
I don't really know what the heck it is.
But flash support was something I really needed because so many sites still use it over HTML5.

@James you disagree? (I don't know, but that wouldn't surprise me)

@Snowflake you avatar makes me think all your messages come with an smiley :)

@JuanManuel :D

@murgatroid99 They are part of the standard of the language
Any platform a C/C++ compiler exists for must support them.

@James That doesn't mean that their behavior is platform independent

@Snowflake ;)

I've used the avatar for a long time, because I love the stuff the guys on the polycount forums make.

@murgatroid99 Yes it does. I use those files I do not care how the underneaths handle it, I expect to be syncing a data buffer to a file pointed to by the file pointer (oddly enough). and when I read from a file pointer into a databuffer, I expect that files data to be read into that data buffer.

Any of you guys do some form of programming for a living?

Me

9:48 PM
Considering getting into it myself, but I don't know what language to start with.

Up until recently, game programming :D

@Snowflake Yep.
What language you start with depends on what you want to do with it.

Depends what you want to do @Snowflake

If you want to do it as a hobby to do fun little stuff, do Python.

@James I'm not really sure what you just said, but I know that there are standard parts of the C language that have undefined (and possibly variable behavior)

9:49 PM
If you want to get into it because you actually want to learn it and become a pro, do C.

And just so you know @StrixVaria cant see what I write :D

@StrixVaria I second this. And I would not recommend starting with C.

@murgatroid99 Starting with C is really important if you actually want to learn about memory state and management.
Stuff that a lot of other languages do behind the scenes.
But it's only important if you actually really want to know that stuff.

What about game programming, what would one start with in that scenario?

@StrixVaria OK C was about the sixth language or so that I learned and I think I have a pretty firm grasp of memory management and such

9:50 PM
C is a tough language to learn, which is exactly why you should start with it.
It doesn't have to be the first language, but if you really want a head start on that stuff, C is the language to learn.

@StrixVaria it's not object-oriented, though - there's benefits to starting with C++ over C

@Snowflake Flash or C# with XNA.

@OrigamiRobot I'm going to stop commenting on that meta post, because I can't seem to shut up, and those comments are getting unwieldy. I'll chat in here though.

@IanPugsley That's true.
C++ is a solid choice.

@StrixVaria I would definitely recommend learning C eventually, but if I had tried to start with it I would have probably quit in frustration

9:51 PM
C++ only pretends to be object oriented, though.
It's not really.

@StrixVaria it's what I started with, and didn't use C until my embedded systems and robotics classes in college

C++ then.
But something that has at least a little bit of self-memory-management.

@Snowflake If you want to do web based games you can start with something simple like Flash. If you want to do PC game programming I recommend C#.. If you want to eventually get into professional game development, you have almost no choice (unless you stay in the web/mobile market) and have to go with C++

Or actionscript, even though it's not very good.

ew, actionscript

9:53 PM
@BenBrocka It's the only language I know! D:

@BenBrocka The internal scripting language of Treyarch actually looks -a lot- like ActionScript

@James two or three?

(thats the scripting language that the designers use :))
2 I would say. I have not used 3 so I am not sure how different it is :)

@James Three is much more sane and less evil.
No underscores.

@Tristan FireFox? I was confused for a while...

9:54 PM
@Ullallulloo Might be 3 then, wasn't too underscore happy :)

Thank you kindly for the advice.

@Ashley for "catwoman" you could've just put "me or Anna Lear". :P

@Tristan It hasn't worked then. Maybe try adding the dll after staring the trial.

Just their data referencing and event binding/registration reminded me quite a bit of action script.. so much so that I could tell them what the script was doing and didnt have to take the programming test :D

@Sterno I'm not trying to attack you. I know you are playing devil's advocate. I am just offering counterpoints for other people to see.

9:56 PM
@Tristan Although it may be the wrong one. But I don't think it was.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, I did leave one last comment. Bad wording on my part. I didn't feel personally attacked at all

@Snowflake word of advice though.. You really really have to want to make video games (in the US) to actually be able to do it. It is a fairly high stress work environment that Everyone wants to be in so competition is very hard and the demands put on you are fairly high.

Next up, an orange GRD320 CAUSTIC GUARDIAN

I felt like I was talking across you guys. I think I have a better idea of what you're saying now.

caustic x2, dam 60, acc 93.6, rate 7.7, reload +24%, ammo regen +10 (!)

9:58 PM
@James Does it pay well? (Obviously, this isn't the only reason I want to get into GD.) I mean in general. I know that nooone can really say for sure unless they do it themselves.
@James By the way, I like your avatar, it reminds me of my own cat.

@Snowflake Game Development generally has horrible working conditions.
I can't say much about the pay, but of all the people I know who have had jobs in that industry, a grand total of 0 have lasted for more than a year.
Before quitting due to stress and lack of time to do anything other than work.
There's a lot of overtime and "crunching".

@Sterno Blanket questions on that scale get just as problematic. If there was a site that compiled max levels of games, it would be bad practice to close all max level questions as a dupe of one referencing that site. It isn't building a knowledgebase here. It is saying "go find this somewhere else".

I'm sure there are good studios out there that don't do this.

@Snowflake It can pay well actually if you stick with it.. But the average length of time a developer can sticks in the game industry is <5 years. However, Game Development and Database programming are pretty much the two top of the line, pay wise, for programmers.
@Snowflake Haha, Thanks. It was on one of those 'Its dangerous up ahead, take this' meme images and Its just kind of stuck with me :)

GOTTA GO!

10:02 PM
@Snowflake Also of note, Programmers generally make a larger portion of the cash in video game development, some times in a 2 to 1 ratio :D

@James Also, I heard that C++ was built off C. Does this mean one should know C before learning C++? I assumed they were similar, but I don't actually know.
Woah, I just realized how close it is to the 23rd. That bag looks nice.

@Snowflake You can think of C++ as containing C. There is a small portion (or so people tell you) of C that C++ can not do, but I have not run into anything in the last 23 years of programming that has been a hindrance.
C++ pretty much allowed C to 'associate' functions with a data structure to produce Objects.. There are other things (templates) and such as well, but that is how C became C++ and 'object oriented'. In video games where processing time is critical, you will notice the C++ programs retain a certain amount of C nature to them...

@James I can't remember what it is, but I do remember that there is something that they changed (incompatibly) from C to C++

Its somewhat hard, unless designed from the ground up, to make Data Oriented (not data driven) game engines.. which is where everything is moving right now.. Its also the secret behind games from Insomniac and Naughty Dog.. While they do some C++ stuff Id say like 90% of their game engine has always been in C.
@murgatroid99 I know in the new specifications there are definitely some things C can not do that I wish C++ could. Like getting address locations to compiled code as well as data variables.
That is the trick behind one of the fastest JSON parsing libraries out there.. which I can not use in native C++ :(

@James I mean that you can write code in C that will not compile in C++

10:10 PM
That does not compile in C++
(Unless your C++ compiler supports that C specification too :))
And that is also one of the most 'holy wow thats awesome' bits of code I have ever seen.. Guy builds his own jump table (switch statements) out of data arrays triggered by key characters from JSON to process a JSON string.

@James Code like that is why I don't like C. It's basically unreadable

@murgatroid99 I agree, took me 2 friends talking and us about an hour to figure it out
But once we did we were all very amazed by it :)

@James I'm sure he had his reasons, but why not just let the C compiler make the jump table like it does with a regular switch statement anyway?

@OrigamiRobot That's why I agree that off-topic is a better choice. They're not really answerable here without pointing to one of those other sites. But if they remain on topic, that's about the only worthwhile answer we can give. I'm not talking about generic umbrella questions for everything. I'm talking about this one specific case. Right now, as it currently stands, these questions all basically become a race to see who can post "go check HowLongToBeat.com" the fastest.
I guess maybe that's okay. Maybe it would help if they got protected by Community to prevent 1 rep users from saying "It took me X hours"

10:14 PM
@murgatroid99 Because while thats the easiest way to describe what it is, its backwards.. its... a conditional switch statement (for lack of a better term).. The case "value":'s always stay the same but where it jumps To is defined by those data arrays and those get swapped around.
He has removed the need for the compiler to make its best guess as to what he has done, he has removed all the underlying assembly associated with loading and unloading the jump tables and he has removed the need to go to other functions, which you would surely do to make the code more readable.

@James Oh now I see. Debugging must have been a nightmare

All of those subtle changes makes that bit of code pretty much one of the fastest json parsers out there.

@GnomeSlice speaking of affection, sounds like guy next door found a screamer :/

@OrigamiRobot On the other hand, your "What's max level" example doesn't work for me. That question IS answerable without referring to a 3rd party

@murgatroid99 Yeah I can not imagine... My hat off to the guy who made that :)

10:16 PM
@James And if he dies and a bug comes out, it will never be fixed

Q: Where is the Prothean Sphere in the Hades Nexus area?

kikou13200I'm trying to find the Prothean Sphere in the Hades Nexus System, but I cannot really find it since all the system are invaded by Reapers and so I cannot scan quietly. (tried many times, many games over without having results from the scan) Can someone could tell me on which system and planet is...

Q: Its not easy being green (When its not even an option!)

JamesHow do I buy color pallets in Draw Something? I know I saw it in here once but I have 118 coins and when I go to the shop it only offers to let me buy bullets. I checked under settings but there was nothing there either. Do I have to do it while I am actually drawing something?

Q: How can I find other high-level Brawl players in my area?

AerovistaeI'm an extremely good, but not professional, Brawl player in the Albany area, looking for other people to play with who are my level. All of the major forums for the game ban threads looking for local competition. Does anyone know how I can find other good players?

Q: Do weapon mods last one match?

Samuel StandrinIn Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer you get one match items (whether you use or not) and items that don't disappear. Are weapon mods (e.g. pistol scopes) one match items?

Kinda wanted a Krogan on my squad.
in*

@murgatroid99 haha, Look at the dates on the project. two bugs fixed by people I believe but its been very quite for a while now :) (Most of it over a year old)

@James I was exaggerating, but reading about programming on the internet has made me value maintainability over the extra nanosecond of speed

@murgatroid99 i would say it depends on the purpose of the software

10:21 PM
@murgatroid99 Both are extremely important in video games.
An engine that can not make a new game is as worthless as an engine that can not hit the target framerate (usually 60fps, 24fps on most portables.. vita might have broken that)
@murgatroid99 On that same note, it took us a year of pestering our boss to let us swap to a component based architecture.. which then naturally lead to a data oriented design... we just ran out of time to get much into it (But when Bumblebee was actually a soldier which was actually Crypto which was actually Scooby which was actually Battlecat. well lets just say Upkeep was becoming a problem with the large inheritance tree we were having to maintain).

@James Good, some confirmation that the CoD games are useless.
Just kidding, of course. Some like them, some don't.

I liked CoD up until 3.. 3 seemed.. Ugh...
But I also worked on Medal of Honor :D THat didnt use our engine though, we were modding another development teams engine

Which Medal of Honor? The new(er. Not the newest one coming out soon.) one?

Nono, came out a long time ago.

Oh.

Ah, that one interested me. I saw it in Office Depot, of all places.
I don't suppose there's a friends list on GSE, is there? I want to invite some of my friends.

user2334
Is it just me, or the vast majority of questions lately more or less "help play the game for me I don't want to make a decision"?

@Snowflake On Steam?

It's really a shame that combat in Skyrim is so awful.

@Ullallulloo Yeah, some on steam, some on other forums.
@Sterno I feel it's improved over Oblivion, but I still heartily agree with you.

user2334
@Sterno I think you have to expect a certain style of combat in an Elder Scrolls game, but I really hate archery in Skyrim. Way too slow.

did the associated account bonus just recently come to be? i switched pages and it gave me the bonus heh, but ive had multiple stack accounts for quite awhile

I personally hated archery in Oblivion. Too fast and unrealistic. But it can easily be modded to your personal preference.

user2334
Not when you play on console :)

wtf

10:35 PM
Oh, yeah. I suppose that's an issue.

Old Haven should have a claptrap

@MarkTrapp Then you're doing TES wrong.

but I can't find it
It's not where it should be

user2334
@Ullallulloo You can't do a game wrong
