Q: Why can't I hide from the Dark Brotherhood?

IsziI just joined the Dark Brotherhood on my current character, and I've noticed it seems I can't hide from any of them. No matter what I do, the eye stays always open when one of them is in the room. Even if I'm alone in the room with just one, and I'm sneaking behind them, I'm detected. Even whe...

@OrigamiRobot FAT apparently doesn't support symlinks.
Only NTFS.

@John yes this is true..why are you using FAT?

user4704
FAT is evil.

@JoshPetrie Care to elaborate?
@OrigamiRobot I was told to use FAT...

@John what OS?

5:12 AM
@OrigamiRobot XP

@John and the other drive is FAT?

@OrigamiRobot Yes.

@John is that machine the only thing its being used for ?

@OrigamiRobot No.

or does it have to talk to linux?

5:14 AM
@OrigamiRobot What do you mean? It's a VM on a Linux host, and they share folders just fine.

user4704
@John FAT has none of the file security attributes or error bit recovery NTFS does, and it has file system size limitations (around 32GB for the whole and 4 or 8 GB for a single file I think) as well

@John what else is the FAT drive being used for?

user4704
I guess if you have to use it, you don't have a choice, and running an older OS like 95 or 98 may be valid reason to do so

@JoshPetrie Oh. Hm. I'll have to ask the person who recommended FAT why they did...
@OrigamiRobot Primarily web developement with a few Windows-only editors with proprietary formats that prevent me from switching to something on Linux. :/

user4704
FAT has a lower overhead for disks that will contain (by modern standards) very little data, since it doesn't do much in the way of organization. You can also more easily undelete files from it if you can boot it into MS-DOS.

user4704
5:18 AM
So maybe that's why?

@John No obvious reason that you couldnt use NTFS
but i dont know the specifics

@JoshPetrie Sounds likely.

So... Playing Audiosurf to a Taylor Swift song is kinda lame. o.o

@John Yeah, NTFS is what you needed

@badp :( Well, I'll keep that in mind for the next one...

5:24 AM
@badp the problem is he might need FAT for some reason undiscernible to me
I would say use NTFS if at all possible

NTFS does hard links, although be careful - it's a feature they have dropped in the newest revision of Made-in-MS file systems (can't remember the name)
also pretty much no Windows program knows what a hard link is or how to deal with one

@badp i dont use hard link, I use junctions

@badp I was planning on hardlinking junctioning .NET's install directory to somewhere on another drive. You make this sound like a bad idea...

Hard links can't cross drive boundaries.
You're thinking soft links

@badp Then yes. I am.

5:26 AM
I don't think NTFS does soft links, at least not for folders.

@badp Then what does?!
If FAT doesn't, and NTFS doesn't...

@badp in windows, a symlink, junction, and hardlink are all different things

uh... ext*?
@OrigamiRobot okay, so do junctions work across drive boundaries?

Oy

oh wait.
An NTFS symbolic link (symlink) is a filesystem object in the NTFS filesystem that points to another filesystem object. The object being pointed to is called the target. Symbolic links should be transparent to users; the links appear as normal files or directories, and can be acted upon by the user or application in exactly the same manner. Symbolic links are designed to aid in migration and application compatibility with POSIX operating systems, and were introduced with the modifications made to the NTFS file system with Windows Vista. Unlike an NTFS junction point (available since Window...
I stand corrected I guess?

5:28 AM
Hm. So that's why mklink didn't work. It wasn't added until Vista.

user4704
I think I use a directory junction to link my .vim directory to one hosted on Dropbox across a drive boundary at work.

sounds like both NTFS junctions and symlinks would work
which is kinda surprising to me
I mean how can you do symbolic links with drive letters

@badp also, in windows, there are directory symlinks and file symlinks

Hm. Sounds like I will be making another VM with NTFS for experimentation...

@John Yeah, turns out working with 10 year old operative systems does have downsides! Who woulda thunk!

5:30 AM
@John yea sorry I just assumed you were working in Win7

@badp Working with Windows has downsides. :/
@OrigamiRobot Reasonable assumption, but I don't have Win7.

@John WinVista and Win7 don't have this particular one.

@John Working with computers have downsides

btw
An NTFS junction point is a feature of the NTFS file system that provides the ability to create a symbolic link to a directory which then functions as an alias of that directory. This has many benefits over a Windows shell shortcut (.lnk) file, such as allowing access to files within the directory via Windows Explorer, the Command Prompt, etc. Junction points can only link to directories on a local volume; junction points to remote shares are unsupported. [http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768 Sysinternals Junction documentation] Junction points are a type of NTFS re...

@badp but working in Vista has a lot of other problems

5:31 AM
↑ this also work across drive boundaries
and is supported in XP

@YiJiang Like that overwhelming feeling I'm getting right about now?

@OrigamiRobot does it?

@badp Yay!

The big problem around Windows Vista was everything around Windows Vista, not Windows Vista itself.

@badp poor resource management being at the forefront

5:32 AM
I'm rather thinking UAC and drivers

is using Vista at this very moment

@badp first thing I do is 100% disable UAC

I have used Vista for a couple years too, up until the Win7 release day. yay msdnaa
@OrigamiRobot Fool.

@OrigamiRobot I was so glad the day I found out how to do that.

I feel like UAC actually makes the computer less secure

5:33 AM
@badp What? All UAC does is ask you twice for the same thing, while not prompting for any kind of actual authentication.

@OrigamiRobot by enabling you to browse the internet as root?

It conditions users to just automatically click "Yes"

Would you ever run sudo firefox?

@badp Are you saying that turning off UAC runs everything as root?

@John basically, since you can't elevate to root privileges

5:34 AM
If so, I'm really confused as to what UAC does then...
@badp But if I started something and UAC says "click yes or stop" wouldn't I give it privileges anyway?

uh... afaik UAC lets your computer run in a looks-like-root-but-really-isn't account. When you do need root privs, the dialogue pops up and the application is elevated to root privs.
Everything else though doesn't get root privs.

@badp And it does by default without UAC?

This is the situation with UAC
I have never disabled UAC.

@badp if by "when you need root privileges" you mean "whenever you do anything" then yes

I imagine what happens is everything's run as root like in WinXP
@OrigamiRobot That's because of everything around Windows Vista
being built for Windows XP
where you're root all the time
As you can see, after a few months developers finally caught up.

5:38 AM
UAC is for people who are stupid with computers

Within a year UAC prompts declined to one eighth of launch levels, and that was four years ago.
UAC is for people who don't get blinded by the whining of the first few months of unusability
That said, UAC kind of fails for not going all the way
It should default all accounts as regular users, rather than admin-but-not-quite
The difference is that when you login as a regular user, UAC turns into a password prompt for the admin-but-not-quite account (you need one, but you don't need to login with it)

UAC fails by annoying users into accepting any pop up that appears on their screen

this gives you a little bit more physical security - so long as the password is safe, nobody can install shit on your computer even if you don't lock your screen.
say, keyloggers.
...this only works if you bring UAC to 11 though, which Vista/Seven by default don't.

@badp But UAC has never asked me for a password...it just says "If you started this, click yes"

@John Because you've never downgraded your account to regular user
Your account is an admin one, so that you can browse the internet as root.

5:42 AM
@badp Hm. That could be bad.

Basically the definition of regular user is "UAC refuses his own login for UAC prompts"
and admin user is "UAC accepts his login for UAC prompts, but asks yes/no anyway because this is the default and if it didn't nothing would appear to have changed anyway"
...if UAC is on, that is.

@badp And suddenly the usefulness and the uselessness and UAC have revealed themselves to me.

Basically UAC is su for Windows (only better) except the default settings are terrible.

Basically, it's useless for an admin account, but you shouldn't be running as admin anyway.
@badp I never knew it had settings.

the usefulness is keeping stupid users from hurting themselves

5:45 AM
Well the setting of defaulting user accounts as admins
instead of having one root user with one root password and the other accounts using that combo as needed
Also yes UAC has settings.
Any setting other than the strictest makes UAC useless though, as the malicious stuff can then disguise itself as "whitelisted" or summat and elevate silently.
IIRC, the strictest setting is also not the default.

And this must be why Me and Robot are viewing it as useless.

@badp even this is useless because it asks for so much that people just click yes

@OrigamiRobot okay, then. How does this work on Linux? You're asked so much to type in your password. How does this work on Mac? You're asked so much to type in your password.
How does this work on Windows when configured properly? You're asked so much to type in the root password.

the purpose of a trojan is to masquerade as useful software
so why wouldnt someone click yes to install what they think they want to install

I won't get into su vs sudo wars but either is way superior than root all the things

5:51 AM
My eyes hurt now.

@OrigamiRobot why wouldn't someone type in their password to install what they think they want to install

@Tristan My brain hurts now.

user4704
off whatever I'm logged in as root now!

@badp thats my point. so how is UAC protecting you there

@John Why does your brain hurt?

5:52 AM
@Tristan Have you been reading this conversation? It's a brain-hurter.

@OrigamiRobot by showing you a couple probably falsifiable details about the program requesting elevation. Which is more than Linux and probably Mac does.
Again, Linux and Mac also don't question your sudo'ing so long as you have your password
why would UAC?

@John Nope. I've been playing Audiosurf.

@Tristan (You can start right about here. You have been warned.)

I'm saying I download coolapp.exe

(insert here a sudo rm -rf / joke)

5:54 AM
I run it
UAC is like "are you sure you want to run this?

okay, how would that work on Linux?

Me: of course I do I clicked it
now I have a virus even though UAC did its job

@OrigamiRobot If the user thinks they're running what they want to run, they'll do whatever it takes to run it. What would protect the user in this scenario?

$ wget coolapp.bin
$ ./coolapp.bin
need root privs
$ sudo ./coolapp.bin
your password:
haha! pwnd!

@OrigamiRobot I know the UAC pain. Every time I try to open SWTOR, "Are you sure you want to run this program?" Every. Single. Time.

5:55 AM
@John being a more responsible user

@Tristan that's concerning. Why does SWTOR need root privs?

my point is: You can't protect a bad user from himself.

@badp No clue. I'll post a screenshot of what keeps popping up though.

@OrigamiRobot yeah, and that's not what UAC tries to do
@Tristan I know how the dialogue looks, tyvm

@badp lol

5:56 AM
@badp right, it develops bad practices in bad users

@OrigamiRobot Bad practices that users already do have.
Has any user ever read an error message? ever?

@badp I do. All the time

How do I make that go away? =\

@OrigamiRobot We don't count.

5:58 AM
@badp Way more than I've ever wanted.

@Tristan You ask the SWTOR guys to not make it do that request
because a videogame shouldn't need root privileges

@badp thats my point. What is the purpose of asking for something that a user is going to blindly give anyway?

@OrigamiRobot Have I or have I not said the default settings for UAC are useless?
Why are you asking me to defend them?

@badp I don't even know what request it's making, to be honest. All I'm trying to do is open the launcher.

@Tristan Hey! Stuff I typed made it into the background of a screenshot! I'm famous! :D

5:59 AM
@badp even on strictest its the same story

@Tristan It's asking for administrator privileges.
@OrigamiRobot Not if you downgrade your account.

Which is generally bad (the "asking for privs" part).
But also very useful in the right scenario.
Games usually aren't the right scenario.

like, installing a program requires admin privs

@badp Why would you do that on your own machine?

@OrigamiRobot To protect myself? from other people?

6:01 AM
@badp if a person knows the admin password, they will give it blindly as well

if somebody gets their hands on my laptop and want to pull a prank on me, worst they can do is plaster gaming.stackexchange.com with the word "PENIS"
they can't install shit, they can't snoop in my sister's folders, etc.

@badp there are infinitely better ways to protect your computer from theft than UAC

@badp So this only really protects you from malicious people with physical access to your computer?

@murgatroid99 It's one way.
@OrigamiRobot I'm not talking theft really.
At any rate - UAC is nothing more or nothing less than su
Please continue to browse the internet as root.

@badp Also, its really easy to get an NT password cracker

6:03 AM
For I must call this a night.
@OrigamiRobot If you don't want to run it don't. Your computer your rules.

@badp Goodnight!

I don't really care. I'm not a salesman.

@badp I'm not trying to be abrasive.
Anyway, @John, use NTFS if possible

@OrigamiRobot Got it.

@John it looks like linkd is what you want for XP

6:12 AM
@OrigamiRobot Ok, thanks.

actually nevermind you need the Win2K Resource Kit for that
that should get you where you want

@OrigamiRobot Ok...

This seems like a lot of trouble just to get .NET installed

@OrigamiRobot Quite.
That's what I get for making my VHD only 10gb. :/ I was not expecting to install so much on it.

@John 1TB HDDs are cheap now hint hint

6:17 AM
@OrigamiRobot I thought they'd gone up dramatically since the flooding in Thailand?

@John Oh yea I forgot about that....yea theyre way up

Q: identify game: space fishing game for old dumb-phones

gcbAround 2006, on an old sony ericson that could only run native C and java midp1.2(no so sure about version) apps, i used to play a game where you had a 'ship' in a planet (or planets?) with huge oceans filled with fish. you would fly (swim?) around, shooting your harpoon on those fishes. often ...

Anyway, I have a good bit of physical space (everywhere except my Vista machine >.<), but I just made the virtual hard drive too small.
I guess I'll just install XP on a bigger VHD for .NET and Terraria and stuff.
badp-style monologue time.
So, the simulation says that I'll take out 2 of the opposing machinegunners.

@John oh boy :D

But instead, they took out 2 of my machinegunners.
Leaving me with one shapeform.
Then, this sharpshooter here goes off to destroy every single enemy, winning me the scenario.
Eh, only 5 messages. I guess I'm starting small.

6:21 AM
What game is this?

@OrigamiRobot Frozen Synapse.

I seem to be stuck in the Imperial Fleet on SWTOR. Every time I try to take my ship off-world my game crashes. lol

@Tristan :(

@Tristan I read "Stuck in the Imperial Feet"

> I overflow stacks while I consume snacks. My name is Davis and my work is hacks.
lol

6:24 AM
that sounds awful

@John =( is right. I'll make due til I get to better internets and can re-download/install the client.
@OrigamiRobot That would suck.

@Tristan It seems that your lousy internets are causing every game you have to stagnate. You should complain again or something.

@John I tried. It didn't help after the first time.

@Tristan that just means you're not complaining enough

@Tristan Do you have a smartphone?
You might have better luck just tethering that.

6:28 AM
@John I do have a smartphone, but can you play online games on a 3G connection? O.o

Could be cheaper too, depends on what you're paying and whether you do it with or without your carriers permission.
@Tristan I've multiplayered Minecraft just fine over one.
Granted, a full-fledged MMO might be more intensive...

Hmm...
@Zamual05 Have you tried Sejuani yet?

@Tristan What kinda phone you got?

@John Droid 2.

@Tristan Droid Incredible 2?
Droid X 2?

6:31 AM
@John Droid... 2.

(There is an X2, isn't there?)

@Tristan No I haven't, but a friend of mine has and he loves her. She has some crazy CC power.

@Zamual05 I just got 1500 riot points and was thinking about unlocking her.

@Tristan Does it look like this?

@Tristan She looks like she could be a lot of fun. If you like the tanky types, she'd be a good one. :)

6:33 AM
@Zamual05 Hm... I like champions like Tristana and Jax... Do you know of any others like them?

@Tristan Oh there is a Droid 2! I didn't know they made a second version of the Motorola Droid.

@John Google, my friend... Google. <.<

@Tristan Yeah, I Googled after you posted a picture. >.>

lol

Anyways, should you decide to try, PDANet has a demo version that can get you unrooted tethering.

6:36 AM
@Tristan Quite a few. Caitlyn comes to mind first for me cause she has a similar attack range as Tristana. Corki as another ranged AD carry and has a similar jump ability.

Only downside of the demo is that it doesn't do HTTPS, which can be sidestepped by a VPN or something.
Shouldn't affect games very much, I don't think.

@John I'll check it out.

@Tristan Be best to sort the store/champion page by carry for similar champs to Trist and fighter for Jax like champs. :)

@Zamual05 I'll do that!

@Tristan I think they took it off the market....but you can still get it from it's website.

@FallenAngelEyes Wanna play some LoL?

1:16 PM
Why in the word does the swtor.exe show up twice in my processes?

@Tristan Whoops, sorry, was playing some Diablo III. Sure, if you're still up for it

@FallenAngelEyes I don't know that I am, actually. My internet just went to crap. =(

@Tristan Aw, okay :(
Ping me if you change your mind!

Will do, but I can't even run SpeedTest.net right now. I miss cable. =\

Ouch. What's your internet situation currently?

1:24 PM
@FallenAngelEyes Still hotel wifi. Pulling anywhere between .5 and 1.5 mbps.

Yep.

1:35 PM
I just don't get it. One second I have an awesome connection with no issues. The next, I can't even load google. =(
On an unrelated note, I'm completely stuck in Qube. lol

@FallenAngelEyes How goes the Diablo III beta?
Finding it enjoyable?

@Wipqozn S'okay.
Still not going to be playing on release though.

@FallenAngelEyes Didn't think you would
I know you hate their DRM method

4 players max adds to my list of reasons I don't want to play. :(

wait
only 4 people can play, or you ca only have 4 characters?

1:51 PM
Also @Wipqozn, GW2 later this year.
@Wipqozn Only 4 people can play at once

@FallenAngelEyes WHY DO YOU TEASE ME WITH HALF-FINISHED MESSAGES

I started typing that before you fixed it... and I didn't want to go back :P
> We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.
I would say we're looking at a summer release date then
maybe early fall
I hope it's summer... since it would be the ideal time for me to play it

@Wipqozn I'm guessing fall, personally. Summer seems a bit soon.

@FallenAngelEyes I can hope :(

1:53 PM
@FallenAngelEyes is GW2 gonna be f2p too?

@Tristan Yes

@Tristan Yes

I assume they will use the same model as GW1

I wasn't a big fan of the first GW, but from what I've heard about some of the features in GW2, I'm pretty excited about it.

you pay for the game/expansions, and there will be micro-transactions for things like extra slots, vanity items, et cetera
Which I thought was a nice way of doing it
I don't mind paying money for vanity items to just support the developers
assuming they are not charging me a monthly fee
otherwise fuck off with charging me $50 for vanity items (looks at WoW)

1:55 PM
They're pretty committed to the "no subscription fee" model, judging from the Arenanet staff I spoke with at Gamescom

@Wipqozn I agree. That type of setup is an excellent way to make money, since there'll always be people (like me) willing to pay extra for useless things like a cool costume.

@Tristan Exactly
I know a friend who play Vindictus, and he'll usually pick up things like that just to support the developers

Kinda like when I spent all my riot points on skins instead of new champions.

@Wipqozn Yeah, I've purchased a bunch of stuff from the Anet store mainly to support them
@Wipqozn Did I tell you we bought a Charr plushie? :D

@FallenAngelEyes No
but that's awesome

1:57 PM
Plus, the support from those of us who pay that little extra for those things seems to help push the developers to release new content much faster than the companies we pay subscription fees to.

@Wipqozn You'll like this. He's got a little tag on him with his name on it and it's "Charrlie"

@FallenAngelEyes haha, that's awesome.
I love that
@Tristan A lot of that probably has to do with the fact that they know people are more likely to buy those things if they are happy with the game

?Yeah, I've seen it before. I really thought about buying it.
What races would you like play as @FallenAngelEyes / @Tristan?

@Wipqozn So far planning on Human, Sylvari and Charr

2:02 PM
@Wipqozn Either Sylvari or Asura.

@FallenAngelEyes Same here, actually. I might make my Guardian a Norn.

I'm just glad it's coming out at all. Been waiting 5 freaking years.

I'm thinking I'll probably have Sylvari Ranger, Charr Engineer, Human everything else

Sylvari Ranger, Asura Elementalist.

Human Necromancer, Sylvari Mesmer, Charr Thief

2:04 PM
I'm going to have soo many characters haha
I'll start with a Human Mesmer...
and, well Warrior and Thief are the only classes I don't plan to play

ok, going back to more D3 and watching internet videos, later all

Q: Flatout : Ultimate Carnage - How to perform bonus actions

Julien NIn Flatout : Ultimate Carnage, during a race you may earn some additional money by performing some bonus actions (Slam, Power Hit, Fastest lap - although this one is pretty obvious !, Blast Out...). At the end of the race, there is a recap of all of them. The way to perform them seem to be expla...

For GW2, I will require one of everything. Maybe two of some things.

Mmmhmmm. Gotta love being at 97 days consecutive visits, and then going away for 2 days (to a place that has internet) and forgetting to check in. This is the second time it's happened (first time I was at 70 days). Oh well. Back to day one again.

2 of : warrior, elementalist, necromancer, engineer
mainly due to "use weapons to unlock different abilities", to get very different skill sets

On the subject of fanatic, I'm 4 days to that badge
It'll be my third fanatic on the SE sites, hmmm

@MrSmooth Clearly I should hack your account when are at 99 days and change your password. That way you won't be able to log in. Mwuahahaha!

@Wipqozn I would probably break my computer. It's the fact that it's sitting there just out of reach that would get me, because when I just forget, I just forgot, but if I was hacked it's like it's taunting me.

Q: Skyrim, activating abilities

hvgotcodesI can't for the life of me figure out how to activate the High-Elf Highborn ability. For that matter, I have used scrolls in the past, but I've also failed to use them. How do activate Highborn? How do I use a scroll? How do I use the abilities granted by ruins?

Q: Skyrim, lowest reasonable level to take on giants?

hvgotcodesI'm playing a heavy Mage build. I'm at level 9, have my destruction skill level in the high 30s. My standard battle tactic is to summon a flame atorach, buff my follower (I have the one you get after you kill the first dragon), then support with lightning based spells. So running around skyr...

Q: Is there a limit to how much health I can have?

lunboksIn The Binding of Isaac, what is the maximum amount of health I can get? Is there even a limit? The health display in the upper-right corner has space for a maximum of 12 hearts. However, during a couple separate runs, I got so many hearts that I exceeded this visual limit, and apparently Soul/F...

Q: Battlefield 3 Kill / Death Ratio Determination ? (K/D)

FoxtrotThis may seem like a dumb question, but I am curious how DICE actually determines K/D. Is your overall K/D determined by a absolute TOTAL of the player's kills / deaths? Or is it based off of pulling an average from ALL of your rounds played and your K/D within it? Here me out: [maybe I am n...

Q: Battlefield 3 Javelin Domination... no air Defense?

FoxtrotI am lover of air combat in BF3, but I seem to get dominated by players/squads/teams with a soflam & Javelin Combo. In my experience, I have not been able to ever shake a javelin in the helo. Flares, ECM, nothing. (maybe the occasional save getting behind a building or hill - seldomly works...

Q: Can Ionic Spark proc more than once with area on-hit attacks?

Grace NoteI specifically refer to Twitch's Spray and Pray, and Shyvana's Twin Bite while in Dragon Form. These both apply on-hit effects to everything caught in them, which had already been a source of monstrous hilarity with Tiamat. Now that Ionic Spark has been brought to Summoner's Rift, I've been pon...

Q: What's the least skill levels that will result in character level 81?

IsziBoth of my level 81 characters got to where they are with power-leveling via Oghma Infinium. As such, I really didn't stop much to notice the smaller steps in level progression along the way. What I have noticed now however is that, with all skills leveled to 100, my character level appears to ...

Q: How can I reset the inventory of a merchant via console?

aditya menonI don't like having to wait 48 hours before a merchant starts selling stuff again. Is there a wait x hours command for the console - where I just type it and it has the affect of having waited for x hours?
