@RonanForman What do you mean 'what's with the sounds'?

@GnomeSlice It's quite blurry.

@RonanForman You can try, but you'll need to re-import it into after effects...

@Lazers I think the real problem here is why someone would be using IE in the first place.

@RonanForman What about the sounds?

@Wipqozn Ferrealz, obv IE8 is the bug.

6:02 PM
So based on the comments in Jeff's answer it looks he supports game-specific tagging for subcategories for games that have 500+ questions. Please to be adding your feedback, if you have any.

@FallenAngelEyes oh what
I didn't even notice he posted that

@badp Trying MapsGL in a different browser than before?

He said that for the more popular games, he prefers the tagging to be more granular

You simply can't use [spellcasting] as a good example of a game-specific sub-tag because it's actually worse than weapons. It's almost as bad as [magic]

@RonanForman What were you saying about the sounds?

6:07 PM
They're weird.

I only ended up using three of them.
@RonanForman Anyway, all you need to do for the various games of Game On! is change the text of 'game label' in the after effects project file, and re-render it.

I actually agree with Jeff that the tags should use the appropriate nomenclature of the games

@GraceNote Hence the call to feedback, I'm sure others can voice their issues more eloquently than I can. I'm still processing this, as I'm very surprised to hear that he prefers higher granularity.

It messes with our tag system, leads to seemingly duplicate tags, but those tags are only useful as subtags of a game anyway.

@RonanForman if after rendering, it doesn't play properly in your local media player, it's probably still fine, it does that for me too.

6:09 PM
@Fabian But how are we going to prevent people from using these tags in other games if they're shared terms?

We have newcomers?!

fresh from skyrim

@FallenAngelEyes We don't, if the names of the concept are the same between different games they use the same tag, if it's named differently they use different tags. It makes tag wikis useless, but nobody looks at those anyway (in my biased, very subjective opinion)

Whether or not they're prefixed by the game or not, it doesn't change this so-called opposition everyone has to "It can't be the only tag on the question" and "No one would search or be an expert on just that". I think that getting the most out of sub-tags with a wider breadth serves us far greater than multiplying our tag base to accomodate individual games.

@GraceNote Hrm, should this be a new meta post then, or perhaps a new answer to @Oak's questions?

6:12 PM
Just the concept of splitting "boss-fights" into game-specific nodes frightens me

@Mana How was MLG?

@Fabian I look at tag wikis :(
@GraceNote It seems to me like increasing granularity goes against what I thought some of the goals here were, namely lessening the number of tags we have.

@Wipqozn Awesome. A 16 year-old Korean Zerg beat Naniwa in the finals, who looked absolutely unstoppable up to that point.

@Mana Hi Mana!

We're using the tag system in a way it wasn't designed for, no matter how we do it the results will be somewhat awkward.

6:13 PM
@FallenAngelEyes Hi!

@Mana Jesus christ
link to the match @Mana?
May make a point to watch when I have time

uhhh
I think you need to pay to get access to the VODs
this is why YOU SHOULD HAVE WATCHED THE DAMN THING INSTEAD OF PLAYING ZELDA. ARGH.
slaps Wipqozn with a dead trout

@Mana Well, duh.

@Mana Zelda > Everything else (even your mom! BAM!"
2

@GnomeSlice Nonono, this is in a tournament with a bunch of other Korean players

6:15 PM
Oh.

Or we could go back to my original idea from a while back and just don't use any tags except for game tags.

@FallenAngelEyes I don't care about the number of tags, but I do care about their size and whether or not they can shadow real game tags

@GraceNote But reusing the same sub-tags for multiple games makes it possible (likely even) that those sub-tags have more questions than the game, which causes problems again.

can never shadow other game tags

@RonanForman How's it going?
@badp Ew, why do we want a tag like that?

6:16 PM
The problem with reusing is that the tags will be more abstract, therefore less likely to be used to tag and less likely to be used to refine a search.

@GnomeSlice Done the coins and the heart. Why are there two texts?

@badp @Grace brings up the point though in the comments that the 25 character limit is going to bite us in the ass here

@badp I'm absolutely no fan of prefix-tags, they're only more noisy

@FallenAngelEyes I agree. Are we going to have to police that sub-tags don't get used on games that don't have enough questions to support them?

@RonanForman Oh, are you talking about photoshop?

6:17 PM
The games large enough to support game tags (I put the bar at 100 questions) are few and far between

@GnomeSlice Yeah.

@badp Jeff's bar was 500

so "sc2-" as a prefix wouldn't get in the way, although we can't use a tag

@Fabian Yah, I really dislike the idea of subtags with the game name in them, ala minecraft-redstone

@FallenAngelEyes 500 is a bit too many questions to go back and retag

6:18 PM
@badp Yeah, @Ullallulloo commented and asked about that as well

@bwarner Which I think that is something we can handle in other ways, seeing as we would like a lot more than just priority when it comes to important game tags

@badp I'd put it even higher, I'd say Minecraft, SC2 and Skyrim could really benefit from more tags, the rest would be fine as it is

@badp I bet we could get in done in a day if we worked together.

@RonanForman One of them isn't rasterized.

6:18 PM
@bwarner no one can use the site for that day

In case you want to use it for other events as well.
So you can edit the text directly.

@FallenAngelEyes Would be better to have a good grip on our stance than to just blindly throw our commentary in there

@badp Why, because all the questions on the front page are about Skyrim? Wouldn't that be unusual...

@GraceNote We're ah, not exactly known for solidified consensus.

@bwarner That is new content. New questions in need of new answers

6:19 PM
@FallenAngelEyes I didn't say consensus for a reason

If we did a field day of mass retagging, then new questions asked during that day would only stand a chance thanks to Mr. Spambot Lazers

If we have really clear rules on tags I think we can solve the misuse problem. We have shown with the Skyrim release that we can deal with quite a lot of new users that aren't familiar with the system

@GnomeSlice If you edit the text does it change the other part?

and everything else (new answers, new edits) would be just drowned in the flurry of retagging

@Fabian Agreed

6:20 PM
@RonanForman In photoshop? Which 'other part'?

@badp So for one day, people that don't know how to use gaming.stackexchange.com/questions?sort=newest are lost. That seems like a reasonable price to pay to get good subdivision on the Skyrim questions.

@GnomeSlice The text you can see.

@bwarner Define "don't know how to use"

@Fabian not an answer not an answer not an answer

@bwarner And then we'd have to repeat this practice with each new popular game

6:21 PM
@badp Either "Don't know it exists" or "Don't know how to access it"

@RonanForman No, why would it? Photoshop doesn't work that way.

Having continual "site outages" when we're hit by better traffic is bad

@GnomeSlice Then why are there two?

Anyway, can you render out the after effects file, and see if it plays on your machine properly?

Well it wont as I'm missing some effects.

6:22 PM
going from 500 questions to 100 question games adds civ5-, df-, wow-, lol-, tf2-, fonv- witcher2-portal2-, codbo-, dxhr-, terraria-, bf3-

What cons are there with just tagging most questions with sub-tags in case they get big?

@RonanForman The visible one is a smart object. That means you can't take the text tool and change the text. If you wanted to write say 'BLOG POST' instead of 'GAME ON' you can change the text layer and make it visible instead.
I used a smart object to resize it with the effects, remember?

The only way we could do mass tag edits without being able to do silent tagging is if we had users going through editing new questions to ensure they don't get drowned.

@Ullallulloo Basically that's what we were doing, and the game tags would lose to the sub-tags that could be applied to lots of different games

@GnomeSlice Oh yeah.

6:23 PM
@bwarner They don't have a problem, unless they're providing a new answer

@Ullallulloo Without a concrete system to start with, how would we know what subtags to use?

@RonanForman CC Ball is one of the built in effects.

@bwarner That would still happen on even big games though.

The problem is entirely ours: we're giving up control on anything on the site during the hours of mass retagging

@Ullallulloo Agreed, I raised that concern a few minutes ago too.

6:23 PM
if somebody takes the opportunity wandalizes stuff, it'll be much harder to spot

@GnomeSlice Downloading it now

@badp It just feels like an ugly, ugly solution to me

@GraceNote One meta post per game, discussing a sensible scheme

@FallenAngelEyes Would you use the tag on a question you just made the game tag for?

@Fabian That seems a little excessive with the pre-emptitive creation

6:24 PM
or the tag or the tag

@GraceNote Arguably the front page shouldn't allow itself to be completely saturated by questions belonging to a single tag, but I also suppose if the tag is really that popular (ignoring the mass-retag case) then perhaps that doesn't make sense..

aren't they already practically reserved for the bigger games?

@GraceNote That was if we stay at "only for games with 500+ questions"

@Fabian My note was in response to Ullallulloo's suggestion of "Why not pre-emptitively sub-tag them so we don't need a mass-retag"

@TimStone I can already see it. "We're sorry, we're not accepting new questions tagged [skyrim] today. Come back tomorrow"

6:25 PM
@badp I have in the past used the larger tags like and on new games and tried to get around the issue by stating the game name in a natural manner in the question title

So either we sub-tag first, and then remove them if the game doesn't reach critical mass, or we sub-tag after, and we run into issues with having lots of edits. The latter seems like an easier problem to solve to me.

@FallenAngelEyes then your game tag gets purged and we never notice because the question didn't become

@FallenAngelEyes But that only works because you know to do it. Most users wouldn't.

If we only subtag later, we can remove the second tag from the HTML title again

but merely or

6:27 PM
soooo much tag drama :|

@badp That's why I try to keep an eye on my own questions

@agent86 Indeed, welcome to gaming! Tags are our number 1 source of drama

@bwarner Yeah, I know. Again, not an ideal solution, but the best I could do given circumstances.

@badp This is something else I'd like to see hand-in-hand with special Game tags

@agent86 Drama? This is meta discussion

6:27 PM
@badp You know that's not what I mean, obviously we'd put up a paywall so people could get their questions in if they really wanted to. (But I really just meant that the question selection algorithm could be adapted to ensure some level of variety)

I still think that the concept of a tag that is more important is not just a Gaming thing, it seems like a number of sites could benefit.

THERE ARE ONE HUNDRED WAAAYS TO TAG A QUESTION. ONE HUNDRED LOVELY WAAAAAAAAYS.

@GraceNote ^this, I don't see any good solution without those.

We need the tag reaping script to clear out the tons of supra-junk tags, but it really is nothing but harmful to game titles. Everything else it is excellent.

Hey @AnnaLear! I hear you're blue now, congratulations!

6:28 PM
Board & Card Games, Sci-Fi, anything where the subject matter has a long tail of individual subject areas.

@FallenAngelEyes She was blue before.

@FallenAngelEyes She was already blue in Programmers, but now she really does have a serious case of the blues

@FallenAngelEyes I'm even more blue. :) Thanks!

@Wipqozn Well, I meant blue again

@FallenAngelEyes Again? Do you mean she stopped being blue for awhile?
Also, congrats @AnnaLear

6:29 PM
MOAR BLUE
BLUE ALL THE THINGS

ONE HUNDRED LOVING WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS

@AnnaLear also apparently your cat is very interested in something high up
@bwarner I agree

Have you considered becoming a singer @badp?

why do we need good subdivision by tags on skyrim questions?

@Wipqozn Thanks!

6:30 PM
@FallenAngelEyes uh... you mean she isn't the cat?
I thought the human was just decoration and food when needed

@DavidB Because there's 625+ and clicking on brings you to a horribly unwieldy list

@DavidB The idea is that if you want to come here to learn about Skyrim, you can find questions broken up by topic.

@GnomeSlice Why do you suck at resizing?

@FallenAngelEyes She usually is. Humans are nothing but launchpads on the way to better, higher places.

if you want to learn, sort by votes. if you want to answer, sort by newest or unanswered. wieldty to me

6:31 PM
@DavidB It isn't necessary if you only want a specific answer, but part of the fun of the site is finding all the answers to the questions you hadn't thought to ask yet.

@AnnaLear hahaha

@badp perhaps drama is a strong word. can't think of a better one though :)

@bwarne wouldn't a search term work equally as well as a tag?

@DavidB Someone might never use the word weapon though, they might only use the word "bow" or "sword".

searcher is likely to use the same word as asker.

6:33 PM
@DavidB the search engine apparently kind of sucks

@DavidB Let's say you wanted to know everything you could about the stealth/stealing aspects of Skyrim. What search term would you use?

@FallenAngelEyes ah, yeah I can confirm that from SO.
I would use , and then search for pickpocking or avoiding mobs or line of sight or stealth skill or any number of other search terms
those shouldn't all be tags

Well... this took me by surprise http://bit.ly/vZ7F3E AUTUMN SALE STARTS NOW!

@DavidB Or you could find one question, notice that it is tagged "Skyrim" and "Crime", search on those tags, and find everything without having to try to dream up every possible search term.

this is the internet - one of the core skills of its use is dreaming up search terms :)

@badp a thanksgiving sale? on steam? NO WAY.

@agent86 It's an "autumn" sale :P

yesterday, by agent86
@badp re: steam sale, almost 100% they're going to run a BIG sale this week
and you people doubted me. pah.

I remember I remember

6:39 PM
@badp I've never played any Sam & Max. Would you recommend?

PAH I SAY

@FallenAngelEyes I also haven't

@FallenAngelEyes Sam & Max is pretty decent.

but if you do make sure you go back in time and preorder it

@DavidB Which is why we're making the internet better by not requiring that skill. =)

6:39 PM
I played the Lucasarts original, and some of the eps of the current. Defn. some of TellTale's better work.

bloody severed heads

@FallenAngelEyes if you like crazy humor, and point/click adventure games, it's solid.

Okay the Aaaaaa one is apparently just a re-release of Reckless Disregard for Gravity with more stuff
@agent86 I do, and I enjoyed Telltale's Strongbad stuff

@FallenAngelEyes Go get it then. S&M is a solid crime fighting duo.

Awww... @GnomeSlice has left.

6:41 PM
@agent86 I do not parse that acronym as relating to point and click adventure games, but thanks for the advice!

@FallenAngelEyes ambiguity intended :)

so, gives me 18 questions fairly well organized. search word "crime" gives me 6 questions, mostly nothing to do with crime.

I can't believe we only have a single question about a boss fight in a Zelda game

I can't in good conscience buy new games right now, knowing that I still have 100+ hours of Skyrim to go. They'll probably be even cheaper in the post-Christmas sale.

Argh, I really shouldn't make my Steam library larger...

6:42 PM
why are we talking about tags when we should be complaining about search!
4

@GraceNote gamefaqs does have them all already covered

@FallenAngelEyes size doesn't matter, although bigger is better.

@agent86 250~ games already though...

Now, I was inches away asking a question about the mothership you fight midway Serious Sam 3

@DavidB This. It's my stance that features solve problems. Is the feature solving the problem it was intended to solve? No? Then fix the feature or remove it in favor of a better one.

6:44 PM
then I noticed you can get hints via middle clicking
it's not really obvious but also not hidden enough for a question I imagine?

@DavidB I really like the Related Tags sidebar functionality, myself. It also avoids the fact that you can ask a lot of questions about similar concepts without sharing any words between them.

@badp Handy. How'd you figure that out?

Tags gives the ability to group like questions that can't be otherwise grouped by search without hackneying stupid keyword terminology or otherwise into the post... which, hey, if we're using keywords, we have tags

@agent86 The game tells you earlier in the game to middle click to fire up... er... the computerized hint thingy

@GraceNote I never even realized how it worked until like, 2 days ago

6:46 PM
typically you only get hints about a class of enemies after you take one of them down, this was an exception.

seems like tags are working (at least in this case). if search looked at the tags for keywords, it would work too

badp has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

@GraceNote Most Zelda boss fights use the latest item you found to beat them.
Man, I butchered that sentence the first try.

@DavidB No, there should be a lot more than 18 I would guess. So tags aren't entirely working, because we can't agree on how to use them consistently.

6:47 PM
I'll start using related tags more, and see how it works for me

@GraceNote I think they'll work better once a coherent system is developed for properly applying them, assuming people moderating the tags (not just moderators, but power users as well) are willing to invest the effort. It feels a little ad-hoc at this point, and I think we're running into a lot of ad-hoc problems (with associated ad-hoc solutions) as a result.

@agent86 I'd love to work on a more concrete solution. We have been hammering at things for a while, as it were.

having the discussions that are going on now is an important part of this, I suppose. I wish it weren't as painful as it has been. (pain being relative, clearly)

I think this is one mess where it becomes clearer how to organize it when there's more to be organized.

@GraceNote I applaud the efforts; I think progress is being made.

6:49 PM
@agent86 You weren't here for the Great Game Rec Wars of 2010

I think the introduction of Skyrim actually helped a lot because it gives us a better view of an actual meaningful selection of subdivisions within a single game

@agent86 Yah, we've been making incremental progress, but as the site grows I think the answers sometimes have to change with it.

Rather than our previously blind mucking about and theorymongering.

UT3 is $5 if you're interested

I haven't steeped myself in the problem or the possible solutions enough to give a concrete opinion on the subject.

6:50 PM
(all the other Unreal games are also discounted)

so for the most part I'm just watching the festivities :)

Hammerfight's €.5

I think part of the problem too is that we're not the implementors, nor the experts on the technology/architecture. What's feasible isn't really in our area of expertise.

Hrm, Oddworld pack for only €3.74
Is it bad that I hate the Steam store for using "indie," "casual," and "family" for genres?

@FallenAngelEyes Are you saying Steam needs better tagging?
3

6:53 PM
@FallenAngelEyes not at all

@bwarner It does. It does indeed.

@badp I'm surprised they can get $5 for it -- Epic has shown they don't care much about Unreal anymore.

@robjb The regular price is still €19

I'm hoping for a good deal on Dreadmoar or however you spell that.

@agent86 Dungeons of Dredmor?

6:54 PM
anwyay, their gfx engine gets like 5 FPS from my GPU

@badp At peak hours you can usually find about 30 players online in UT3.

@robjb I can imagine, with that price tag

@robjb friend and I wanted to play co-op campaign together and never managed to connect

They released it with bugs and didn't bother addressing user complaints.

6:55 PM
maybe a good question for here, hrm

They stopped patching extremely early compared to other releases
And campaign was a joke

@FallenAngelEyes Sounds plausable.

ehh.... if you buy a game such as UT for the SP you're a tool

Not to mention that half of the promised improvements / features were not included and never spoken of again.
@badp True, but at least the tournament in the original was fun.
UT3's SP wasn't even worth including in the game

@robjb UTC3 wasn't even worth including in the game.
IT was stripped down and inferior version of UT2004

6:58 PM
Eh?
No it wasn't, it was a hark back to the original
The gameplay was good and enjoyed by old-school UT players.
It was just bugged.

@robjb Yeah, but for playing co-op FPS, there weren't a lot of other options at the time that I and my b/f found fun

@robjb From what I remember they removed a lot of the game mods from UT2004
I could be confusing it with another game though

The point I'm making is that it's not a sequel to UT2004.
It was attempt to go back to the more grounded feel of UT
