2:24 PM
@Criggie - What is this a fuel pump for?

5 hours later…
7:17 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Holden inline 6 - not exactly rare or strange. Seems that its moved to the "vintage" class rather than the tinkererr's class

4 hours later…
10:59 PM
hey @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, you there?

@amphibient - Unbelievably yes?

LOL

Don't ask any hard questions ... my head hurts.
:o)
What's going on, bro?

Hey -- in your video you position rings on pistons relative to one another. Is that really important -- that the gap of one is at 12 and the 2nd at an angle relative to it?

@amphibient - Absolutely imperative. The further they are from spec, the worse your blowby will be.

11:02 PM
ok -- I will look in Haynes if they specify the angles

They do.
At least every Haynes manual I've ever seen has it in there.

now, it is understood that, once you put it in the compressor, they may shift a little

@amphibient - If any, it will be minimal.
Mind you, things don't have to be exact ... just get things as close as you can.
(with the rings!)
@amphibient - You good?

11:29 PM
I think so -- Haynes does have a diagram

@amphibient - TOLD YOU! :o)
Have fun putting it together. It's the funnest part of the whole process (for me).

Another question -- when honing, I noticed that I got streaks (approx. 30 deg angle) and no top band of different shade on cyl 1 -- but not on the rest
I wonder if that is because the grit pads collected oil/residue from cyl 1 and were not as abrasive
do you think I should have cleaned the pads before each cylinder and with what?
e.g. chemically (alcohol or acetone) or with a grander and a flapdisk

@amphibient - NO FLAP DISKS ALLOWED!
lol

i meant flap disk against the hone pads

I'm really not envisioning what you're saying, but realistically, with what you're doing, you're just trying to break the glaze and that's it. I'm sure it's going to be fine. I don't clean my hone stones between cylinders.

11:34 PM
also -- i think i should have cleaned each bore chemically before honing but didn't -- how do you think that should be done?

@amphibient - Run the stones, clean the bores after.

OK -- I was suspicious because it is visible that cyl 1 has honing streaks and the rest do not even though they look clean

Not sure what to tell you.

is it good to clean with alcohol / acetone / seafoam ?

The big thing you're trying to do is break the glaze. Clean with WD40.

11:37 PM
OK thanks
The glaze is definitely broken

Keep cleaning the bore until your cleaning implement is clean. You can use coffee machine filters to clean with.
