OK, thanks. Do you think the state of the old rings, which I have not yet removed from 5 out of the 6 pistons, can be used to (dis)prove my theory why I was leaking so profusely? They all look fine and none are stuck to the piston, in other words, loose and can be removed easily. I was expecting that I was leaking because they were stuck and therefore unable to flex to fill the circumferential gap between the piston and the cylinder bore. Is there another explanation you think?
 
@amphibient - No clue man. i was going off of your premise you were replacing the rings because they were leaking.

I am just hoping that replacing rings will fix it and that it's not something more serious like the freezing cause cylinder or piston warping and stuff
Do you know what they are supposed to look like in good condition? Mine were just kinda loose, if that is abnormal, that could explain the leak

@amphibient - You can use a flat file, but you have to ensure the end is square as you are filing it. That's how I did the rings in my video. Truth be told, you probably won't need to file any of them if you are going back to the stock size.
You should be prepared for it, though.
 
"the end is square" meaning the edge of the ring end is parallel with the file ?

@amphibient - When you but the two ends of the ring together, they have to be square to each other. You most probably saw me doing this without real explanation in the video. If (big IF) you have to file a ring, just do it slowly while keeping the ring face flat on file. Honestly, I doubt you'll need to file new standard sized rings.
 
so RockAuto is offering standard and .50mm oversize. you think, given my case scenario, i should just wing it without measuring and get the standard.

@amphibient - Oversize requires boring the cylinders, along with new pistons. You make the call.
IOW: It's go with standard rings, or take it to the machine shop (ie: standard or nothing)
