@JamesWilson - Search for a "pick a part yard" ... self salvage yards do exist and you are spot on about being able to save yourself money pulling the parts yourself from a place which allows it. I'm not sure of how things work in the UK, though. @NickC might be able to answer that question easier than I can.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @JamesWilson It's years since I've been to a scrapyard/salvage yard here. They certainly used to allow you to remove the parts yourself, but I've got a feeling most don't any more, they now insist on removing the parts themselves - I suspect there were people injured and the health and safety people got involved...
Also, you won't get anything for "next to nothing" - the guys running those places know what the stuff's worth, and will check on ebay if they don't!
