10 hours later…
12:10 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yeah this was beautiful

12:41 PM
@RoryAlsop How's the weather in Scotland at the moment? The BBC are reporting loads of snow and ice...
Have you reached the desperation point of "might have to think about putting a jacket on", or is it still t-shirt and shorts? ;)

12:58 PM
@NickC it was quite fun this morning - 2" of snow when I got up, so the first part of my commute was perfect. Then there was traffic, which ruined the 2nd half... it's sunny though now, the blizzard has stopped, and I'm thinking of heading out for a lunchtime hoon
No jacket required, however it's a work day, so trousers and shirt are on

@RoryAlsop lunchtime hoon in the snow... that's the spirit!

1:13 PM
@RoryAlsop - Could you please elucidate on what a "hoon" is for this Yank? You've got my head running crooked wondering ;-)

An enthusiastic drive just for fun

Shaweet!
Yes, must have a few of those.

I think it comes from the Australian contraction of hooligan down to hoon

I'm good with that.
:o)

Right - see you later. Hopefully without any unneeded dings to wheels or bodywork :-)

1:16 PM
Heh :-)

1:53 PM
@RoryAlsop Similar to another comment I read this morning: "I live in rural Scotland, and so I'm prepared for snow, with a 4x4 and good tyres. Unfortunately everyone else isn't..."

Hooning also has the implication of sideways-ness. In the snow, it usually requires making four roostertails for the awesomitude!

@NickC - This is not a phenomenon which is strictly limited to Scotland.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 very true.. precisely why I hate driving in the snow I'm pretty sensible and have a basic grasp of the laws of physics, other people... not so much.

There are also advanced lessons like “that person who’s spinning out in the snow in front of you probably won’t be able to drive directly into you but best to avoid them anyway.”

2:09 PM
@BobCross and "perhaps the reason the outside lane of the motorway is empty is because it's half covered in snow, and snow is slippery"
although scratch that.. that's part of the basics really
I had a friend once who tried that and had a full 360 degree spin.. but then he really couldn't drive

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Indeed not - on the odd occasion we have snow here, I leave the car at home, we usually end up with total gridlock...

@motosubatsu you would think. My favorite from the last couple of days was the front wheel drive car that had managed to eat the snow drift on the inside edge of the on-ramp. Clear case of: too fast in turn, started to oversteer, panicked braked and then the car understeered where it was pointed when traction returned.

@BobCross yep...classic schoolboy error in that sort of conditions

We don’t get big snows here very often. When we do, my little car is like a magic spell. Driving past people who are sliding backwards is surreal.

I really wish that skidpan or other low friction training was mandatory as part of getting a driving license

2:16 PM
I’m becoming more of an advocate for self driving cars for people who really don’t like driving.

@BobCross I used to run a little Renault Clio as a daily hack and with winter tires on it was unstoppable in the snow.. it used to be hilarious just driving past everyone who was on summers and stuck

Not sure what the status of the software is WRT low traction but I doubt it would be worse than some of what I see.

@BobCross Amen to that.. all we'd need to do then is make the driving test very very hard to weed out those who think they can drive but can't

@motosubatsu I’m willing to compromise: I think a lot of people hate driving. Given the chance to play games on phone instead I think they’d take it
I’m sure that some will explore options that are much more rude than “play games on phone” above.... 😉

@BobCross offering someone "a ride" will take on a whole new lease of life

2:25 PM
@motosubatsu - Among other things ...

2:36 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ - Heya :o)

I could go for a self-driving car for everyday use and just keep one conventional one for the track
totally definitely unrelated to the thing you were saying lmao

@Ceshion - How are you today?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 greetings great one

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ - If only, lol!

im excited we finally have snow, not ice but snow

2:39 PM
Kewlio!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I'm really good! New pay rate just kicked in at work and I have projects I like to work on, I have all kinds of plans with people this week, just went to an amazing jam show over the weekend and I've kind of just been walking on air since ^u^

@Ceshion - Grats on the new rate :o) Mine will kick in next payday. Mmmm ... Strawberry or rhubarb?
;-)

@Ceshion thats always nice to hear!
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 what is a rhubarb, lol

For the term pertaining to baseball, see bench-clearing brawl. Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) is a species of plant in the family Polygonaceae. It is a herbaceous perennial growing from short, thick rhizomes. It produces large poisonous leaves that are somewhat triangular, with long fleshy edible stalks and small flowers grouped in large compound leafy greenish-white to rose-red inflorescences. In culinary use, fresh raw leaf stalks (petioles) are crisp (similar to celery, although they do not share the same family) with a strong, tart taste. Although rhubarb is not a true fruit, in the kitchen it...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 thank you! and more like strawberry, but in reality it was these bands called Spafford and Goose

2:44 PM
@Ceshion - ROFL! I figured as much :o) I was just playing.

for a sample
I was easily the danciest one in the crowd though, can't figure out why

3:41 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 We have a rhubarb plant in our garden, and our neighbour has two apple trees - apple and rhubarb crumbles & pies all summer :)

@BobCross roostertails - check! avoided minor scuffs and dings - check! SPins in an empty car park - oh yes indeedy!

@RoryAlsop nice.. sounds like you had fun

@RoryAlsop I try not to do real spins. Those do attract attention from the gendarmes. Drifting they seem to be more sanguine about.

@Ceshion very Dire Straits
@BobCross drifting on roads - there's a road closed over the hills near me. Lovely. The car park round the corner from me... no-one cares much

We have had a fairly empty parking lot available for drifting practice for a while. Sadly, they seem to be putting it to use once again. Too bad, it was great fun in a constrained environment. No ditches!

3:51 PM
@Ceshion not so keen on Goose. I'm not really a synth fan

@NickC - Sounds better than awesome!
@RoryAlsop - For some reason I was thinking Sanatana without the salsa attitude. Probably just the sound of the lead guitar.

4:06 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah - I can hear a bit of that too :-)
and now my brain thinks "Salsatude" should be a word

@RoryAlsop - ROFL! Nice!

4:56 PM
@RoryAlsop The music they played there was much more like Spafford's, guess they were trying to keep a consistent sound
can't imagine why, not like those concerts are basically raves for chill people
and this is the one I'm going to see in Feb/went to see in Nov:
I loved them so much I grabbed tickets as soon as I saw they were in town again

2 hours later…
6:56 PM
So in reference to the earlier discussion - we had half an inch of snow here this afternoon. It took me 15 minutes to get out of the business park where I work...

7:27 PM
Half an inch is a dangerous amount for summer tires. “Oh this is fine dum de dum help argh I’m spinning! crash crash crash

2 hours later…
9:29 PM
The kids got creative while I was out for a drive
Weather was almost perfect this evening. The snow got so mad the roads got empty.
