@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yeah, I knew we could just take the cash and use it to do some amount of repairs since we would have easily gotten another 5 years out of the car. I think the concern was how much less we'd get on it when we eventually traded it in but I end up thinking more about it as... if we had fixed most of the dents, would the handful that were too difficult to fix have really lowered the value that much? I don't know since I'm not sure how they evaluate that but I'd guess not.

@Catija - It does take a bit of a paradigm shift when taking the "I'll take the money and the car" approach. You are going to get less on the car on a trade in, no doubt, but if you consider the money you'd be getting from the insurance company as the difference, you might actually be doing better in the end.
You'd also probably want to sell it to a private party and not a dealership. The Stealership wouldn't give you much if anything because they know what they can get away with.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Selling to a dealership is much easier but I do recognize they're not going to necessarily be as kind with small issues - I had one of the salesmen when I asked why the trade-in value was so low as - "It has a dirty CARFAX"... which seemed very silly to me since the event in question was someone backing out of their driveway into my car's driver side door while it was parallel parked. The damage was quite minimal, so that characterization felt very unfair.
For me, though, I just want to be honest with people. I wouldn't want to hide the hail damage history but I think that because the dealerships want the best-possible quality, particularly visually, they're quite harsh with evaluations for purely-visual issues like hail dents... but the right individual buyer is much more likely to be forgiving about buying a used car with a handful of hail dents (not a full storm-worth) that couldn't be repaired easily.
