@3Dave - Not sure how it is in Texas, but in most places they cannot stop you from working on your own stuff whether you are licensed to do the work or not. You still have to do it to code, but you don't have to be licensed.

I had a guy do some work for me once who was not licensed, but he did outstanding work. When the inspector came out to look at it to pass it, absolutely no issue. He sarcastically said it was "good work", knowing I hadn't done the work but was passing it off as my own.
