@motosubatsu My story is similar: When I entered a former job I was shocked about the code quality of my colleague: All copy and paste with minor variations in the if-branches. In the entire code there was not one transaction. The program crashed every while because he had no clue of memory management in object oriented languages. When people complained that something was wrong he just cut them off by "You are not supposed to click that button first" or something similar.
He didn't particularly liked me when people understood that improvement could be possible.

@3Dave - Would something like this interest you?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 that looks f##king cool
of course they don't ship it to the UK :(

@motosubatsu - I thought it said "world wide"?
It says on the page, "global racing league championship"

I went on to the pre-order page: *This item does not ship to United Kingdom. *

nice
Gunna jump right on it, eh?

it might be the same definition of "world wide" as used in the "world series"
aka 'Murica!!! F##k YEAH!

2:45 PM
Doesn't mean you couldn't compete ... just need to find an alternate means of getting the car
@motosubatsu - Don't blame the States because the UK can't compete on a global scale ;-)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 haha.., you just won't let us play because you're afraid of losing :P

@motosubatsu - What does Wario say? "Looser!"
Still, the little autonomous racer is pretty kewl.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 it certainly is.. I'll be keeping an eye open to see if it becomes available over here

I hope it does!
The reason I was bringing it up to Dave is he's currently working on some ML stuff ... thought it might be interesting to him.

if nothing else the possibilities for hilarity with trying to train it to avoid my cats are immense
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah I expect it would be pretty interesting to him given his existing car-based interests

2:53 PM
yup
@motosubatsu - cats vs cars could present some huge hilarity!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 if I ever get one I promise to post the video results!

noice!
Considering the car is only $200 (IIRC), I may be down with buying one.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 they can do up to 15mph apparently.. definitely fast enough to have some fun with

Look out cats, here I come!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I had to star that comment.. just because in a couple of days when it has zero context it's going to look super weird :D

3:01 PM
lol
too funny

hilariously one of my cats would be able to out run the deepracer

@motosubatsu - Only for a 1/2 mile, then all bets are off!
The real key to this, though, is that you have to develop within AWS in order to do the learning, so AWS is looking to get more people to buy server time within their cloud

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 and obviously the more server time you buy the more development/learning you can do.. so the more you spend the faster you go. It's a microcosm of "real" motorsport

@motosubatsu - True. Amazon is billing it as "Getting started in machine learning!"
heh

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 translation "hopefully the money you spend on compute time playing with this will be just the tip of the iceberg!"

3:16 PM
I"m thinking Titanic here ...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 there was totally room for two on that door

heh
I'm in AWS training and trying to stay awake ... not succeeding very well.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 definitely don't be thinking about how many sheep you can see.. or how nice that feeling is when you finally get to crawl into your nice comfy bed after a long day.. or how good warm hot chocolate tastes on a cold day

@motosubatsu - You ruined it with the last one there ...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 dammit.. I just had to push it too far didn't I?

3:31 PM
lol,
I've got to do a LAB, so I'll be AFK for a bit

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 going for a nap.. gotcha
sleep well

Q: I drove my bike without engine oil for 100kms at 80kmph and more after which it made a shrieking sound and stopped

Phani KumarHi guys I'm phani kumar and im new here, I purchased hero achiever 150 from KRISHNA SAI MOTORS, MALKAJGIRI, HYDERABAD, India authorized dealer of Hero MotoCorp Ltd. I have been facing many difficulties with the bike despite taking proper care, ever since the first service, bike had many issues ...

Wow, just wow

4:38 PM
"taking proper care" and "driving without engine oil" are somewhat mutually exclusive

@motosubatsu - agreed - I'm feeling for the guy a bit though ... seems he was taking care of his bike by trusting the mechanics, not having a clue how to do the stuff himself. Now he has a trashed bike.

that might be a bit harsh to be fair.. you generally don't expect a dealer to leave it empty of oil after a service
by harsh there I was referring to me not you!

@motosubatsu - Well with you on that one!
;-)

that's one of those questions that I hate to see - because there's no good news we can give them

Yah, you're exactly right.

4:42 PM
chances are the bike (or at least the engine) is basically a write off

Yah
@Zaid - How goes it?

Yo @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2

How are things?

I'm good, thanks. Finished installing the air springs on the LR3 at midnight

I'm hoping my parts get here today, but are "guaranteed" by tomorrow.
@Zaid - How did that go? Is it all done?

4:45 PM
How are things with you?

@Zaid - I'm good. I'm in AWS class today, so getting stuffed full of stuff.
Best part about it is free breakfast and lunch ;-)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 it's under observation. I'll post some updates on my diary in a bit
Long story short, don't be lazy when it comes to refreshing o-rings
And torque the flippin' brass fitting down to spec :)

@Zaid - That pretty much falls the same with any of the cheap replacement parts ... don't be lazy (or cheap) when it comes to refreshing those kinds of parts ... it just doesn't make sense.
Do it right the first time and be done with it.

Amen to that. In my situation it was because I didn't know where to get them from initially

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yep.. see gaskets, bolts, clips etc

4:49 PM
@motosubatsu - yuppers
You know what kills me about MLS head gaskets? When I was growing up and learning how to wrench, it was drilled into my head, "Don't ever, ever, ever re-use headgaskets!" ... and what do they do with MLS ones? Reuse them very often! I mean, willy-nilly just use them again! Drives me nuts, but they work just fine, lol!

I ended up saving over $1000 by not going to the dealer (which was my fallback strategy)

Oh, that's why I do all of my own work that I can.
I save myself a ton of money ... most of the time.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 if you're like me you'll still never quite trust them though, despite there being oodles of empirical evidence to the contrary

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I plan to treat my wife with the money saved. A gesture of appreciating her putting up with my automotive missions. I'm open to suggestions ;)

@Zaid diamonds
you can never go wrong with diamonds

4:56 PM
Good suggestion but I got her something with diamonds a few months ago...

@Zaid you know what's better than diamonds? more diamonds - more seriously is there something that would match the existing piece?
building the set as it were
alternatively $1k is a sizeable chunk - enough for a romantic weekend get away?
that way you can have the subtext of it being time dedicated to her when you can't work on the cars as they aren't there

I'd love a getaway but it's not practical with the kids and all
@motosubatsu ooh, those words would be music to her ears ;)

@Zaid could a family holiday work? it's not quite as personal to her but has the same thing of you dedicating time and attention to the family

Yes, that could work

@Zaid That's awesome
My wife's birthday is coming up. Planning on getting her a new laptop

5:07 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 this reminds me of that Home Improvement episode where Tim the Toolman struggles to find Jill a gift for her birthday

@Zaid who's Wilson in this re-imagining?

@motosubatsu that'd be you

@Zaid hehe.. I'll take it

@Zaid - No doubt. You ever watch Tim Allen's current show? Last Man Standing
@Zaid - Agreed!

5:25 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 no

@Zaid - The network which owned it had cancelled it (last year?) ... there was such a public outcry, another network picked it up and it recently started airing new episodes ... it is really funny ... like as funny as Home Improvement

Q: Poor performance

rodgerI have a 2005 chevy avalanche 5.3L 4wheel drive. The vehicle starts and runs good and you wouldn't think anything was wrong with it while driving. That is until you step on it. If I were to spin my tires from a standstill in the snow and get the engine revving a bit then let off, the engine conti...

Wow, I'm just done here.
One of those people who have all the answers and just won't listen to or actually read what is written.
As in ... I have one of these engines. I know how they run. Why do they think they need to school me on it?

1 hour later…
6:53 PM
Alrighty! I'll be back on later. Cleaning up this desktop since I don't own it!!!
Later peoples

7:23 PM
Good evening!

@IanC hi!
How are things?

@Martin All good, another small issue with the car today, but something minor. What about there?

@IanC All good. You got me curious, what happened with your car?

A couple days ago I noticed the speedometer stopped working once, but it went back to normal so I thought I probably didn't fix the cable well enough on the panel. So yesterday I went to work and it was working, and this morning coming back from work it was not working again
I had been having issues with the ECU complaining of the speed sensor, so I'm wondering whether it's related or if it's just a coincidence it happened these days, I'll remove the panel again and try to figure it out
I got a spare speedometer cable here, so I might try to change it as well, who knows I might fix both issues?

@IanC The funny thing is I know that this concept exists, but I never touched a car that has a speedometer cable.
But taking a look would surely not hurt

7:57 PM
@Martin I just disassembled the panel, second time I do it, it's actually quite easy to disassembly, just a pain in the arse to put back because you barely have any space to put your hands and lock the speedometer cable to the panel, unless you unlock it on the transmission (which is easy) and push it through the hole that goes to the panel (not so easy, not sure why, think there's a rubber lock there)
I'll try to exam it even further than last time, maybe I missed something, then I'll check the cable that is there, maybe replace it, and reassembly
I wanted to test the VSS sensor, but I'm not sure how.. There are 3 connectors, positive, negative and signal, but with it disassembled I'd have to both feed the positive/negative connections and somehow make the speedometer cable rotate fast enough so I'd have some signal

I guess that'd make a good question here on mechanics?

@motosubatsu @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 you guys were not working in your cars because of the cold, here I just took a shower and sweated all over again just to disassembly the panel because of the heat haha
@Martin Maybe, I think it might be a little broad at the moment, I'm not sure the speedometer failing and the VSS error are connected, since they happened in different times :/
@Martin Oh, you meant how to test the VSS?

I assume it all depends on how you state your question
@IanC yes
Need to take care of my daughter, see you later

@Martin I might work on a question about it then!
Alright Martin, have fun with her! See you later :)
