@DucatiKiller, Interesting thought... Centerpunch is probably best since it might be hard to hit a window with a static tool hard enough when under water. You're not going to have a fast swing.

Black hole sun is such a screwed up video.

@LynnCrumbling, Indeed.

@JPhi1618 agreed, that seems pretty easy actually

Hey, @BobCross, home yet?

@BobCross you were right. Rory nailed it immediately.
@BobCross welcome back

6:05 PM
Heh. Not quite. It's going to be a long day.
0400 here.

ouch

What timezone is that?

Melbourne time?

Austrailia?

Yea, the big Melbourne.

6:07 PM
There's power in silence

Huh. And we've moved right on to the Heart-Shaped Box video.

@LynnCrumbling sounds like your on a Grunge binge

Did you hit a 90's you tube channel?

@LynnCrumbling you going to pile onto the experiment?

The best story from this trip was that two strangers recognized my N7 polo shirt at a distance and started conversations. :-)

6:10 PM
@DucatiKiller Youtube's prediction algorithm is completely confused by the fact that I've gone from Verve - Bittersweet Symphony to STP - Creep.

@BobCross Did they have an opinion on strategy?

So it retaliated with Guns and Roses, AudioSlave, and finally Soundgarden.

@BobCross We've been busy hacking the hnq while your gone. We waited until you couldn't say no.
@LynnCrumbling yeah, your on a 90's binge....

There is international consensus that Jennifer Hale is the best of all things ever.

Of course, before Verve, I was listening to Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen, so I'm sure that's what caused the psychotic break in the first place.

6:12 PM
Man, some Audioslave might be good.

It's now exhibiting fractured personalities.
Mission accomplished.

@BobCross she does have a good voice
@BobCross Her video simulation is better than actual self IMO

@DucatiKiller yessir

I'll move on to CSNY and completely confused the shit out of it shortly.

@JonathanMusso sweet
@JonathanMusso check the hotness points right before you post so we can see the result.

6:14 PM
Where can I see that?

@DucatiKiller you are completely free to have your own incorrect opinion. ;-)

@JonathanMusso hover your mouse over the question in the HNQ, it will pop up a little number
@BobCross I lack international flair unless you look at me. It's all a ruse planned long ago by my parents.

@DucatiKiller 61,168

61<point>168

now we can see if it goes up after you post

6:16 PM
@LynnCrumbling, try some Stabbing Westward.
Or Gravity Kills.

@BobCross Eat some good Vietnamese food for me.

I just hit it with some upvotes.

Because Melbourne is known for great Vietnamese?

@JPhi1618 According to my buddy there's a huge Vietnamese expat community and awesome Vietnamese food there.

6:20 PM
Cool, never would have guessed.
@DucatiKiller, I think he's clowning on your spelling of Tensile.
It's at 63.168 now.

@JPhi1618 good point

Tinsel strength would be Christmas tree related.

LOL
It's great to publically fail.
Good for the soul

And argue for the fail. That's next level.

LMAO

6:31 PM
question, shouldnt this question be closed as a duplicate?

Q: Bleeding Brakes 2002 Bonneville with ABS

notapromikeI had to replace the 2 brake lines that go from the master cylinder to the ABS control box. I bled all 4 brakes in the proper order, (RR,LR,RF,LF) but the brakes are minimal and the pedal goes to the floor. The master cylinder is full. What am I missing? Should I have attempted to bleed these ...

2
Q: Bleeding Brakes

notapromikeAlso with regard to my 2002 Bonneville brake bleeding question, I could not get the rear bleeder bolts loose and did not want to twist them off, thus I bled the rear brakes at the brake hose going into the caliper....Is this acceptable? Thanks

I saw that, but since one was about another specific detail, I didn't think so.

@Darth_Vader I'm not sure. It seems like two separate issues. I was pondering the same thing earlier.

I thought it could be made as an edit

the stuck bolt is different than the bleeding procedure
@Darth_Vader they could be consolidated maybe...

@DucatiKiller congrats on your question

6:33 PM
I decided to leave it alone. But as Bob would say, flag it if you want - that's why it takes more than one vote.
64.668 right now.

do any of you use an adjustable desk?

@JPhi1618 My bullshit answer lol.

@Darth_Vader I do

I have one too, @Darth_Vader.

one thing about that I disagree with in regards to ducata's question is people haven't experienced a mass flood it seems. I have, in 2010, water went 20' in minutes and people were driving in it
@DucatiKiller I was looking at an uplift desk but wondered what you guys have used

6:39 PM
I just have one at work from some major office furniture manufacturer.
Some people in our other office have the spring-loaded lifting kind that sit on top of a regular desk. They are enough to lift their two monitors and keyboard/mouse, but it's not the whole desk.
They work and are less expensive.
Last time I was at IKEA, I saw they also have adjustable desks now.

@JPhi1618 ya the reviews on those are bad. the desk themselves arent too bad so getting some as side desks

Yea, I didn't even touch one - just saw it and was like, Hmm...

@DucatiKiller how's the social experiment coming along? :)

We discovered Hotness Points. You were here for that?
I just got +1 point on my answer for the escape question. How do you get only 1 point?

Drifting in and out

6:49 PM
I figured out the +1...
nevermind.

Maybe you downvoted an answer and it got deleted

I'm maxed out, and downvoted someone so I had 199 points.
Then got an upvote...

Lol
So hotness is hot

@Zaid It's going well. Interesting. makingdonuts for minute. brb

It's cool to have an actual metric to play with.

6:51 PM
eeww... I have a fuel filter question.

@Darth_Vader what is it?

@JonathanMusso Good pile on, it's perfect :-)

looking to see if it has been asked, but I was curious to know if its a good practice to remove the fuse for the fuel pump and let the engine run all the fuel before changing the fuel filter to prevent fuel from the lines going everywhere.
was going to use a silverado as a reference since the fuel filter is at the lowest point on the frame.

In my experience (BMW M5) it's not a whole lot of fuel
I wouldn't bother removing the fuse

Would the engine even suck fuel out of the lines without the pump?

6:54 PM
@JPhi1618 thats part of the answer im looking for ;)

@JPhi1618 yes

65.6xx hotness points now

Because the engine creates vacuum

so it ticked up just a bit on day 2 after @JonathanMusso 's answer

@DucatiKiller How did I even get points for that lol

6:55 PM
it might need to stew a bit more before a query executes to increase the points though
@JonathanMusso welcome to the rep train. Look at my crap answer.

I guess we're not talking about EFI then?
66.668, @DucatiKiller

@JPhi1618 doesn't matter.

answers++;

The engine is going to suck fuel out of the injectors?

@LynnCrumbling thanks +1

@JPhi1618 Yes

68.168

it's definitely ticked up a bit. It seems the time metric is holding it down now. Yesterday adding responses was ticking it up 20 points at a time.

@Zaid, wow, ok.

...but it may need to stew...
65.099 now....dropping

7:03 PM
I bet answer edits drive up that point total almost as much as adding an answer.

Drop is unexpected.

Additionally, new comments.

@LynnCrumbling good point.
@LynnCrumbling I'm not sure about comments. I was under the belief comments effected it but there was a meta post that didn't list that aspect.

Let's test it.
Added a comment.

Q: How can I manage my need to take short bathroom breaks in a professional setting?

two bugsI have a very non-threatening chronic kidney condition. One of the recommended management techniques is to drink a lot of liquids - this keeps my kidneys from retaining more water than they need to. The obvious downside is that I need to visit the bathroom semi-frequently (maybe 4ish times a day,...

@DucatiKiller ^ this is the golden standard to aim for :)

7:05 PM
How often do we think that hotness point total is recomputed?

158.xxx
Why is social engineering so interesting?

65.57 now

@Zaid, Golden standard indeed.

Wow, you're at 2951 views.
If only .1% of those people come back, we've got 30 new users.
(assumes users=views)

@LynnCrumbling, I feel like it's recomputed whenever a dependant variable changes.

7:10 PM
I feel like there's more room to improve. Maybe a bounty?
:)
(need 2 days out for that.)
@JPhi1618 That would make a lot of sense.

@JPhi1618 You saw what I did there

66.981

And maybe one dependent variable is a 5-10 minute counter that will naturally decay the points if there's no other activity.
If no one touches it, it won't stay at 66 points.

I believe that upvoting good comments boosts activity just as much as upvoting an answer.

Hmm, that's a tough one. Comments really don't seem to have the same weight in any other situation.
Or do you mean, purely psychologically boosts activity?
@cdunn, I asked Duc this earlier... Do you think you can swing your glass breaking tool with enough force underwater to break a car window?

7:18 PM
In the eyes of a system monitoring actions on an object (question) and sub-objects (answers, comments), I'd think that any Create action carries a lot of weight compared to a View action. It takes time and effort to add an answer or add a comment.
67.923

@Zaid I answered that one before it got anywhere near HNQ! :-)

Huh. Just got a 'create tag synonyms' privilege.
68.864

Lol, you guys

@LynnCrumbling, the kicker is that you need +5 on a question with that tag to create one.

Hah. Nice.

7:22 PM
I'm tempted to write a web crawler to track the hotness status updates in this chat

You can probably get that via their api
(a lot easier ;)

Now where's the fun in that?

<grin>

APIs are for sissys that can't do it themselves!

@Zaid :-)

Q: Does a carburettor engine appy fuel at high speeds when not pressing the pedal and more

EChan42There's a question that is pretty similar to this one except the existing question satisfies EFI engines. EFI question Let's say I roll down a hill at a considerable speed I let go of the gas. Say my revs are 3000. While going down the hill my revs will remain at 3000 but I'm confused on wheth...

@DucatiKiller you should be all over this one
Mention something about idle control in a carburetor

I'm just going to say that if a chat room could have hotness points, we would have 276.287.

@JPhi1618 You just broke my web crawler :(

@Zaid It's got a decent response. I try to answer the good MC's and the unanswered questions that have aged a bit usually.

hotness formula: time decay details, 7 hours of magic and damage of the fake score

interesting

@Zaid that one really should have had more answers.

This is pretty interesting too.

A: In “network hot” questions formula, discard answers when voting evidence indicates that these are not good data points

GlenH7TL;TMWtB That's a brilliant idea! and would bring some much needed balance back into the hotness values! This change should really cut down on the run-away questions. * Too long; tell me what to believe Data to back the assertions Being an engineer, I have this crazy predisposition for ha...

7:28 PM
@DucatiKiller

@Zaid @Zaid That's next level
erg
lol
@Zaid The responder to the declined request provided data regarding watching a single question in the HNQ
that was the interesting part

Because you know what's going to happen if they do, right?

share the wealth

Hit the rep cap today
It's quite rare for me to do that

68.3xx
@Zaid you and @JPhi1618 Horn of Bounty

7:31 PM
We need Rep point rollover.

@JPhi1618 the feeling of getting votes and not an increase in rep is unique.

After the 200 max, it rolls into the next day.
A least I don't get little upvote notifications at the top that say +0.
2
I'm blissfully ignorant of the missed points.

you can see the votes without points next to them in your the activity of your profile if you want.

@JPhi1618 Or -0. That would suck

@DucatiKiller, No I do not want, thank you.

7:34 PM
I'm sure there is a German word for that feeling

There always is. Like Fahrvergnügen but the opposite.

@DucatiKiller schräder valve
depressing

I can't find the meta post that describes the metrics of HNQ. I need to escalate to a better googler.
@Zaid that actually works
lol
I just received a bronze badge for my horrible answer

That's amazing.

Way to validate failure SE
OH LOOK! Cooter just chimed in!
0
A: How do I save myself from a sinking vehicle?

Cooter Davenport(1) Getting out of a sinking car is very difficult. The reason for this is that the car will list to the driver's side due to the weight of the steering column and the driver's weight. That means you will be located on side of the car tilted downward. It also means the driver's side will fill up ...

he's nurturing the baby along for us. Thanks Cooter!

7:40 PM
You can always count on Cooter.

68.8xx What's the aging metric? What decays hotness?
I need to kick my google issue up to Level 2. Can someone goto meta and find the hotness metrics?

Does anywhere here know statics?

@SethKitchen, Maybe but that's a little random, right?
Did you just look for rooms with statistically high activity?

Where should I go to ask?
I thought it might be related to mechanics

You want to post a real question or just chat about it?

7:44 PM
Chat about it because it's concepts
Not math

I'm not sure we have and resident statisticians. There are several programmers/developmers.
@LynnCrumbling, you into statistics at all?

Statics not statistics

@SethKitchen engineering.SE

Ok ty

Oh, sorry.

7:45 PM
It ok :)

I totally messed that up!

@SethKitchen but what's the question?
I might be able to help

We do have some engineering folk in here.

static - like when your hair stands on end when you rub it with a cat :-)

You and your cats.

7:47 PM
@RoryAlsop I don't think that's what he's asking

(I know)

@SethKitchen What kind of engineer?
we have soft dev, mechanical, security, infrastructure......

Is that what Jonathan does?

@DucatiKiller you're forgetting social

Well, Rory is already here.

7:49 PM
@DucatiKiller I'm an electrical and electronic engineer by training, and social engineer as part of my day job

Q: What makes mechanics.SE so special?

ZaidI've been active on this site for almost two years now and have used it to get help, learn stuff and assist others. mechanics.SE is by no means the first website on automotive maintenance and I doubt it'll be the last. But there's something about it that makes it so... unique. I've been trying...

@Zaid, that's on my TODO list.
Really.

@Zaid I was trying to find something you haven't covered

Guys, no action on this yet
Except for Nick C
@RoryAlsop I don't mind if stuff is repeated. It merely reinforces the message of what works well
That's pretty much what Nick C did

7:50 PM
@SethKitchen Apparently we have a social engineer in here too.
@SethKitchen Keep your wife away from him.

@DucatiKiller dunno what you are implying...

@RoryAlsop, I think that was a dig at being a grungy rock star.

@RoryAlsop I'm just being a dork

If you guys want to prepare more HNQ questions, may I recommend the sandbox
?

 mech.SE Questions Sandbox

A place to list, discuss and critique potential questions for ...

playing on the social engineering statement you made.

7:55 PM
@DucatiKiller Have any friends interested in Rods? I wanna sell a project to someone in the States ;)

I'll give you $500.

@JonathanMusso Most of my friends are high RPM euro fans

I'm out guys. Chipped crown - gotta see the dentist.
Have fun.

@Darth_Vader your question is now in HNQ

@JPhi1618 Haha!

7:57 PM

Take care @JPhi1618
@DucatiKiller 10-4!

@JPhi1618 take care man...doesn't sound fun

Rory AlsopI am a member of a few Stack Exchange sites, and they all have their specific attractions, but as I have been a petrol head since I was about 5, motor sport, cars, motorbikes and engines have a particular fascination for me. Okay - there you go
@DucatiKiller I thought it was funny - pity there is no simple way to indicate amusement/sarcasm etc on t'interwebs

@RoryAlsop Thanks!

@RoryAlsop indeed...btw....that's a nice thoughtful answer...like it

7:59 PM
@RoryAlsop You couldn't have said it any better man.
This is probably one of the most welcoming areas of SE, I think.

Guys, I've had an idea
