6:11 PM
@DucatiKiller Well, that's not part of the money-saving list, lol.
But I think it can handle a small one. There's an old kit, used with universal success. But the engine's getting pretty old. I still haven't decided if it's a good idea or not yet.

@JasonC With the miles you have on that car I would say that it's not a good idea.

Anyways I wouldn't put it on there without at least being satisfied that the engine was in decent condition. Which I'm a long way away from checking out.

I would only used forced induction on a new or rebuilt motor, not one with 190K+ on it.
You would have to measure out the bottom end to validate. There's no other way to get the data. Tear down.

Yeah.
Well I don't have any friends with hoists. But I do have friends with forklifts, lol.

forklifts work! lol

6:16 PM
Does anybody ever check out engines with an endoscope instead of ripping them apart?
Can you even do that? I guess, if you drain out all the oil, you can check out the linkages through the oil drain maybe.
And the heads would be easy through the spark plug holes

You can't measure it, only visually inspect. They sell engine endoscopes. I used to have one. It's good to make basic determinations but your still in the guessing game with real data collection.

Need a scope with a 3d laser scanner on it.
That either has to exist, or will in the near future.

Someday.....

They're all stereoscopic but maybe some of them do precise digitization. And it's definitely possible to build accurate models from enough stereoscopic images, we have that technology now.
You could do an MRI on it I think it should penetrate stainless steel and aluminum.

You have to be able to measure the bearings. The crankshaft sits on plain bearings that provide hydrodynamic lubrication. The crank sits on a think layer of oil between the crank journal and the bearing.
You have to take the bearing cap off and use plastigauge to determine clearance.

6:26 PM
Oh, yeah, that wouldn't work.
Drones.
Lift up engine, tear apart, measure, rebuild, at night while you sleep.

There you have it.
The drones......

Next!

6:48 PM
I just sprayed graphite dry lubricant all over my laptop.

7:13 PM
Right, here I am. Je suis ici
@DucatiKiller how should we game the system today?

hey @Zaid Need to fish some parts out of the cleaner and dry them. Need 5.

ok

@Zaid OK, thanks for waiting
@Zaid Not sure of the question though......

No worries @DucatiKiller. I was finishing off my pizza

hmm: pizza
Hi all

7:23 PM
How can keep pizza off my car?

@DucatiKiller do we go down the Mr. Popular route, go with something deeply technical or try something mentally stimulating?

Hi @Myself

Hey @Myself
I think I've got one that's a good blend of the above

I like the idea of mentally stimulating......deeply technical is difficult to get a bunch of people to jump in on.
I used to have a bunch of them in a doc but I couldn't find it....lol

Is this some question/answer game?

7:25 PM
Q: Is there such a thing as too big a fuel injector?

hmmmm.....could get closed as too subjective.....

Inspired by:
Okay I think i get it now. From what i know though, too big injectors can be a problem if they're really too big, because the pulse width becomes so small the ECU can't accurately generate that small pulse. this would get you inaccurate behaviour in the low power range, and rough idling if i'm correct. — Bart 5 hours ago

A: Everything can be too big?

Seems like a sensible statement.

BTW this is a real issue

7:27 PM
Yes, I've seen kids do it. My sons friend like to wreck everything at least one time.

@Zaid If the relation between idle consumption and full power consumption is too high?

Cuz bigger is always bettttttter, right?

@Myself then you have to raise the idle speed
@Myself no, we are plotting how we can launch a question into HNQ

@Zaid I'm struggling for the question that a bunch of people could pile onto.

True, I was just going to say
Tires are popular
As are brakes

7:29 PM
As are engines and clutches

But tires are on another level

we've beat flywheels into the ground

Unorthodox tuning ideas?

Agreed on tires

Q: Is tire gel detrimental to tire longevity?

7:30 PM
I see potential here

longevity/life

@Myself We want something that a bunch of people can pile onto. When that happens relatively quickly the question goes into the HNQ and all of the SE sites can see it. We want something universal that a bunch of people could chime in on.
When it's in the HNQ then more people become aware of this site, hopefully.

Ok, got it

@Zaid I like that question.
@Zaid Your referring to the fix-a-flat liquid?

7:32 PM
One of the worst things ever is breaking a bead on a tire with junk in it. Just a big mess.

Eww

@Zaid OK, the outside dressing.....

Should we go for it?

yes, I will need to read up on it a bit to get an opinion that is worthy.
I rarely use the stuff

That video is good

7:33 PM
yes
There's also the internal stuff. Like fix-a-flat or the runflat prevention liquid that plugs the hole as soon as it's created.

That video is the reason for the question. Because he is promoting his own water-based product and claiming that solvents are bad

It's a sensible position

A common objection would surely be that water based compounds are normally soluble by water (rain)

@Myself Good point. It just washes off potentially.
@Zaid We need some others to pile on.
@LynnCrumbling Come hither!
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Where are you?
@anonymous2 Are you back yet?
@JonathanMusso HNQ.....we need you to pile on.

I guess a question about rust prevention on the place where the car jack goes would be welcome

7:42 PM
@Myself hmmmmm.....

@Myself yes
We had a few like that earlier

@Myself I have an answer if you ask the question :-)

18
Q: How to raise the car higher than the jack stands will allow?

cdunnSo it's time to raise the car onto jack stands, but for whatever reason it needs to go higher than the stand height allows. How can I safely raise the height of the car? What I have done in the past is put a 2in concrete pave stone under the stand. It's much bigger than the base of the stand, an...

Throw it in. @Zaid and I can answer for now

Yes

7:44 PM
brb, baby is crying

@Zaid The responses to that question my stomach churn. I can't get the thought of the car crashing down on someone out of my head. I wouldn't do most of those configurations, ever.
@Myself Those crying babies.....

Wassup?

@LynnCrumbling Hey, we want to get some folks piling onto a question that @Zaid is asking to get into the HNQ.
@LynnCrumbling We're hoping you'll pile on with us.

Done, done, done and done.

Sweet
He's formulating and posting the question now....

7:50 PM
@LynnCrumbling to give you a heads-up on the question title
Do gel-based tire dressings have a tangible impact on tire performance?

Cool.
Let me know when it's posted.

Will do. TY.

Q: Do gel-based tire dressings have a tangible impact on tire life and performance?

ZaidIn this video, the professional detailer talks about how "low-odor" solvent-based tire dressings can harden rubber hosing. He goes on to say: "I don't want this stuff on my tire if it makes rubber - y'know - that hard." I don't question the ability for this stuff to harden rubber hoses...

And... it's posted.
I got the first upvote... ;)

@LynnCrumbling Here we go

Hmm, looks like a good question. Should have checked before upvoting, but I knew it would be good... :)

@anonymous2 Pile on with an answer if you can
@anonymous2 We get as many people to answer it quickly to get it into the HNQ, it's great advertising for the site within SE overall.

@DucatiKiller I'm working on it... but it's really not my expertise, so I may come in a bit late. And I have to leave in about half an hour, so I'll see what I can do...

8:18 PM
@anonymous2 No worries. Don't feel obligated. I'm googling to answer too.

@Zaid That looks like something that would scratch an itch for me. Watch in second.

And we're off....

@Zaid Here's mine.

A: Do solvent/gel-based tire dressings have a tangible impact on tire life and performance?

DucatiKillerAccording to Michelin, don't use petroleum based tire cleaning products The general belief system that all tire cleaners or dressing are bad seems to be founded in Urban Legend. Water soluable tire cleaners aren't listed by any manufacturers of tires to be detrimental to the rubber. Michelin c...

@LynnCrumbling You in?

@DucatiKiller- What's going on brother?

8:33 PM

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 What is up? We're hacking the HNQ
Your just in time. We need you.

Noice! I love it when we do that! :o)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Here's the question.

@DucatiKiller - Thank Man! I need you too! :o)

@Zaid That vid is next level

How can I do better than what you've written, D?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 where've you been?

Working ?
Some of us have to exchange hours for cashola.
Been pretty busy at work.
Been busy with classes.

no worries

8:36 PM
been busy with killing fleas in the house.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 You can validate what I could not. You could directly oppose my answer. You could find the solvents that DO make rubber hard. You could find the solvents that make rubber soft. You could eat a pizza.

But I'm here, as always ...
@DucatiKiller - I already did the last part, earlier today for lunch :o)

You could eat all the cookies.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Make it better.

I quit eating cookies about 6 months ago.
Or so.
Halloween is going to hate me this year ... none of the sweets going in me!
@DucatiKiller - Did you get that note I left you in the fork/triple thingy motorcycle question?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yes, but I didn't do anything about it. lol
I've been focused on cleaning CB900C parts and tweaking my steering dampener.

8:40 PM
Okay. I mean if that's the story, I'm good with it. I just wanted to make sure you were aware.

Then @Zaid came along and well.....no we're playing, so.....

If anyone on here could answer it, it'd be you.
I'm looking stuff up right now ... hopefully, lol.

I'm going to throw in later. but.....focus with me here.....HNQ
:-)
@Zaid I subscribed to that channel. Good stuff.

Ok, @Zaid, it's in.

A: Do solvent/gel-based tire dressings have a tangible impact on tire life and performance?

anonymous2Probably not, but... There is no concrete evidence that tire shines do indeed effect the longevity of tires significantly. There have been reports of the possibility of petroleum based tire shines possibly effecting the longevity of tires, but there are no verified studies that prove this. Wat...

@anonymous2 BAM!

8:42 PM
@DucatiKiller yeah, the guy puts out quality videos

Go ahead and serially upvote, I'm capped at 200 for today... :)

@anonymous2 Well done.

@DucatiKiller - Your last link doesn't seem to be working in the tire shine answer.

@anonymous2 it's your downshift answer that's at fault :)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 TY, I will fix it.
@anonymous2 2 days in a row. Heroic.

8:44 PM
@DucatiKiller I know... I never thought I'd see the day, lol.
@Zaid Yes, I didn't even think it would go that far. It seemed... well, so basic.

48 more of those and you get a silver badge.

I'm going to have to leave now... I'll try to drop by long enough to upvote any other decent answers that go on.

and an atta boy
@anonymous2 take care

Thanks, same to you!

catch you later

8:48 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Fixed. Thanks for the heads up.

ZaidEngineering Mud Layers of sand/earth sandwiched between sheets of cloth. I was initially quite skeptical about it, but this video blew my mind: Sand Castle Holds Up A Car!- Mechanically Stabilized Earth

@DucatiKiller - Crap ... that was the article I was going to use, lol.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 lol....whooops

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 curse o' the googlez
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 try altavista or lycos :)
Maybe Jeeves can help :)

@Zaid NICE! It's in?
I love what we do......

8:54 PM
@Zaid - ROFL! I think I'll just look some more ... lol

Yes, at the top of page 2

@Zaid after @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 throws in it will shine on page 1.
...and I will ride a wheelie in honor of Him.

@DucatiKiller let's hope the shine's not solvent-based :)

Agreed. That would be bad.
If silicon is bad for breasts I would imagine it's bad for hands and lungs.

@DucatiKiller - Only if it leaks.

8:57 PM
If it's sprayed everywhere does that count as a leak?

37.7xx HP

@LynnCrumbling Are you in? It's in the HNQ already.

Q: Why does Honda Civic 05 overheat when water reservoir gets full?

OB1gamerxDMy father in law's Honda Civic overheats when the water reservoir is full or to the top. He is wondering what could be the problem if the radiator needs water when the reservoir is full. The temporary solution we found was to use a sponge or something to suck out the water from the reservoir to ...

Middle of page 1. Nice placement!
@Zaid bad radiator cap not letting fluid back into the radiator when it cools?
Seems like it's not purging the air properly.

@DucatiKiller quite plausible

9:05 PM
Time to eat ... I'll see what I can do in a little bit.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ....but you just had pizza....

Priorities @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2

How is part called where the car jack touches the car?

@Myself One sec. Can't remember, but I'll find it.
@Myself The Toyota diagram in this question calls them "lift-up points"

Q: Jack stand placement on frame rail for 2000 Toyota Camry

cdunnI did search "jack stand" and there are lots of posts that get close, but nothing that really covers the specifics of what I'm looking for here. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry with 143k mile on it. My garage is not terribly wide and I need to jack up just the front to work on the brake calipers and ...

9:14 PM
@DucatiKiller Perfect, TY

@Myself - I've always called them "jack points" or "hard points"
Doesn't mean I'm right, though.

Hi Paul, how it is going?
"Jack points", could also be useful

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 When I google 'jack points' I get all kinds of hits.
Hard points yields, not much.
Jack Points seems more right.

@Myself - How are you doing, sir? How's that baby? I saw he (?) was crying earlier? Get him settled down?

Got that settled, the little one was crying while my wife was bringing the older to bed.
I am fine, except that I realized that I have spend 2 days at work doing something that was unnecessary....
How about you?

9:32 PM
@Myself - I'm good. I found out today at work I have to go to St Louis for a few days. I've got a meeting there at 9am on the 31st, so I'll have to leave out on Sunday night.

Last meeting I had was strange. I was told that on that evening I had a meeting in a nearby city, turns out that 1. the meeting was so short that it could have been done much better by telephone and 2. I was not the right person for it

@DucatiKiller Yep, up-to-date on upvotes for all.
Only 56 views so far :(

I was confused, thought you were going to throw in with an answer....but I understand now. TY!
It's hotness is pretty good. @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 is going to throw in. Allegedly.
:-)

Um ... yah

Sorry for the misunderstanding :) It's a bit out of my sphere of knowledge :)

9:39 PM
Still trying to formulate something.
@LynnCrumbling - Research, my man! Me myself, I'm just reading up on it and will post something ... don't yah know that's where all of my answers come from ;-)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Busy researching how to get a watermark on a WPF PasswordBox :)
(must adhere to MVVM .. no code-behind.)

Here @LynnCrumbling Let me compress some of that time for you.
:-)

@LynnCrumbling Remind me not to ask you what all those acronyms mean ... it sounds painful.

@LynnCrumbling Yeah, I'll have agree with @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 sounds excruciating.

You can produce BEAUTIFUL windows apps with WPF. It's incredible.
This is the UI for the main product that we make:

9:49 PM
@LynnCrumbling Funny, listening to Animals right now.

That's sweet

Contrast that with our legacy UI from 10 years ago:
^ classic battleship gray windows app

yah, huge difference!

WPF lets you restyle everything.

9:52 PM
What does WPF stand for?

For the geeks out there, WPF uses DirectX rendering for compositing everything.

I looked it up ... should have done that first. TY for posting, though.

@LynnCrumbling That is also something I (should) work on

It's trivial to do animations. This kind of stuff only takes a few lines of code:

@Zaid @DucatiKiller - I'm looking for something for the tire shine question, but I'm not seeing anything which actually answers the question of if it's actually bad for the tires. Just a lot of conjecture about getting it on yourself or the paint. Not much real information about what it does to the tires themselves.

10:01 PM
:-(
That's ok, it's in the HNQ.
Let's try and think of one for tomorrow maybe.
Keep shooting stuff into the HNQ.
Take care guys. Going on a test ride. See ya'll later.

'night @DucatiKiller

@DucatiKiller good night
I am off to bed, cya

10:20 PM
See ya @Myself
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Hrmmm. Thorium is radioactive :-/

Um ... didn't think so.

Thorium is a chemical element with symbol Th and atomic number 90. A radioactive actinide metal, thorium is one of only two significantly radioactive elements that still occur naturally in large quantities as a primordial element (the other being uranium). It was discovered in 1829 by the Norwegian priest and amateur mineralogist Morten Thrane Esmark and identified by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who named it after Thor, the Norse god of thunder. A thorium atom has 90 protons and therefore 90 electrons, of which four are valence electrons. Thorium metal is silvery and tarnishes black...

yup, you're right ... reading that now.

Never heard of that element until now.

It says it's "weakly radioactive" ... we probably get more radiation from space. Besides, they are talking about burning it, not using the radioactive portion to build up steam.

11:08 PM
thorium is the material of choice for modern designs for non-meltdownable nuclear reactors
or fuel of choice
but takes days to power up or down
