Are hub cap clips really this expensive? amazon.com/gp/product/B001G7NFA8/… I need 8 of them for my back two wheels (4 bolt) and I can't believe that they're $5 each. They're just a little piece of metal

If I knew more about the system, I'd probably try and answer it. I had the same line of thinking you had. I am somewhat familiar with what Mercedes once came up with, which was a dual disk clutch. It would use one clutch which was connected to one set of gears, then setup for what it believed was the next gear on the other clutch. Smooth disengage/engagement system to change gears, but very complicated. The AMT sounds like it is way more simple, at least on the auto manufacturer's end.

The Top Gear guys get very judgy about all the automated / flappy paddle-equivalent gearboxes.
