On a 2001 Honda S2000 (or any other car for that matter) does the intake manifold cover (plastic piece held on with two 10mm acorn nuts) actually protect against something, or is it purely aesthetic?

I've come close to saying "Hey, somebody ask this specific question so I can answer it!"
I was going to say something to the effect of "cosmetic but..." - in theory, it keeps crud off of places that you might not like crud to get. Myabe there's some teeny amount of heat insulation for the intake as well.
I doubt it, though - once I got my turbo blanket, I ceased being impressed with heat insulation of pretty much any other sort.
I can just about touch the turbo blanket with bare finger at full temp (if I had a spare finger). That's pretty effective.
