go go gadget connected chat!
Or not :/

@James Wha?

hello all!
thanks for joining

My chat is all messed up again

Hello! I'm guessing the decision has been made?

@Fluttershy not yet, that's why we're having this chat :)

7:00 PM
Ooh. Okay.

@Fluttershy This is one of the "designated discussion periods." Didn't you read the meta post? ;)

@TimStone I... skimmed it. <.< I do a lot of skimming...

Yes, this is a designated discussion period
in general, this chat room should only be used for making suggestions
but I know making suggestions makes you want to discuss and brainstorm as well, so that's what this is for
with that being said - does anyone have any questions, concerns, thoughts?

About?

@GnomeSlice anything related to naming the site really
our criteria, any of the suggestions that have been proposed so far, etc
if no questions, does anyone want to call attention to any of the starred suggestions in particular?
e.g. make a case for or against any of them

7:04 PM
I like 'Gamestack' actually.

Remember to star suggestions you like if you haven't already

FAE
@GnomeSlice I'm not that fond of Gamestack to be honest, it just doesn't... sound like anything to me.

@FAE like a...stack of games?

@FAE But it does sound like it relates to the Stackexchange network.

@Lauren Is this a formalized step in a site's life cycle (again), or is this a unique one-off for Gaming?
i.e. when a site becomes successful enough, it is given a unique URL and brand

7:06 PM
@IanPugsley right now this is just for gaming

FAE
@BenBrocka I'm not a programmer so that's the only thing I think of and it's kind of a... meh image.

I can't actually stay, unfortunately.

hi gang

I say 'GnomeSlice.com'. Ciao.

@IanPugsley perhaps when other sites become as large and active they will get similar treatment, but that's not definite. So right, now consider it a one-off
@GnomeSlice also i tlooks like gamestack.com is backordered

7:07 PM
@Lauren cool, k :)

so whoever proposed that did not follow the rules cough@AbbyTMillercough :-P

Putting on my community member hat for a moment, "arqade" is my favourite.

jk
@AnnaLear of the suggestions so far, I agree
esp because arQAde

wearing a similar hat, i too am down with arQAde

yes that ^^

FAE
7:08 PM
I like Reload Save and/or Quick Save, as it goes along with the noun pattern of the other big three.

@AnnaLear How do you pronounce that?

@Ullallulloo Arcade.

@AnnaLear That kinda makes it hard to verbally communicate. :P

I have this line in an email from Robert from 1.5 years ago: "Inquired about buying quicksave.com (gaming) but it is not for sale"

Same way Joystiq is just "joystick".

7:09 PM
@FAE true, but not all of our sites with names go along with that pattern

"arcade with a q"

ask different, for example

Gamestack would kind of be OK if the site design was radically changed (e.g. the graphics had piles of games)
otherwise it's boooooring

FAE
@AbbyTMiller My biggest hesitation with arqade, while the QA is awesome, is that the general gaming community will be like "whatever, you're just ripping off joystiq's name"

I'm worried that it's a combination of joystiq and penny-arcade :\

7:10 PM
yeah, it doesn't seem totally original, that concern is valid

@FAE we talked about that a little yesterday

FAE
@DavidFullerton Thaaat's a really good point that I didn't even think of

I severely dislike 'arqade'.

OTOH, the "QA" in the middle is pretty defensible

joystick.com

7:10 PM
CacheInvalidationAndGaming.com

@DavidFullerton but those sites aren't related anyways

That says nothing about 'Q&A'.

but I think if we capitalize QA it will be more clear that that's the reason we mispelled

@DavidFullerton well, it's just hard to put a Q in "penny". :)

I don't know what's going on here.

7:11 PM
qenny

.com

qennyarpade.com

let's keep the jokes to a minimum

@GnomeSlice It doesn't need too, it does have "qa" in the middle, and neither does gamestack to most people.

@DavidFullerton This is a gaming site, we're about jokes.

7:11 PM
gamestaq

For what its worth, while my chat is a working. Gaming.StackExchange is the name of this place. I honestly can not think of another name I would even want to call it.
3

35 secs ago, by David Fullerton
let's keep the jokes to a minimum

gamestaq sounds worse and like an even more blatant rip-off of joystiq

yeah I think ending with a q does that
misspelling with a Q is not necessarily a rip off of joystiq
esp because it would spell QA in the middle

Joystiq isn't the only site to alter the spelling of a common word, so I'm not too worried about that, especially since we'd have a cute pun-type thing going with 'arQAde'.

7:13 PM
@James fwiw I don't think the URL would change, you could still call it that

@NickT it would be a redirect, like what askdifferent.com does

@Ullallulloo That's true.
I really don't think we need to purposefully add a spelling error because it's "cool" or "modern".

but it's punny

very web 2.0

@GnomeSlice I don't think "cool" and "modern" are the primary motivations here.

7:15 PM
@AnnaLear right, it's misspelled because no way we could get arcade.com, and the q actually make it easier to convey what our site is
qa

@Lauren Plus, arcade.com sounds like an arcade, which we're not.

yes ^

Okay, seems like we'll be looking into buying arqade.com. HOWEVER, everyone should bear in mind that with any squatted domain there's maybe a 10% chance of actually being able to buy it.

@Ullallulloo very true

as far as the 'issue' of arqade being a homonym with arcade, how often are you trying to promote the site strictly verbally?

7:17 PM
@NickT not too often. Most promotions are done online

But we're not an arcade anyway. You don't play games here. And you don't go to an arcade to ask about games.

@NickT Never really, but then why not just use gaming.stackexchange.com?

Just because it's a cool name doesn't mean it suits the site.

I don't think it will be too hard to say "arcade with a q" though

or s.tk/games?

7:18 PM
@Ullallulloo because gaming.stackexchange.com is boring/long

@GnomeSlice don't be so literal...you play games with a joystick, so a review site should never be called that

FAE
@Ullallulloo When I was at Gamescom last year, it really sucked not having a shorter more catchy name to tell to people.
"Hi, I'm from this website gaming dot stackexchange dot com!" "...what?"

@GnomeSlice but an arcade is sort of a social place for gamers (dated perhaps)

@DavidFullerton right, it just needs to convey the idea of video games

@FAE Yeah, but that's not the norm.

7:19 PM
where they can ask/answer questions

anyways, we're not making a final decision here

A: Chat room for suggesting a new name for Gaming.SE

Nick TShould the ".com" only restriction be absolute? What about domain name hacks (youtu.be, etc.)? They seem to be increasingly common nowadays, usually for URL shortening but occasionally for the whole brand (o.co). I think the major pitfall here can be the extreme cost to register certain TLDs...

@GnomeSlice Arcade has to do with playing games. QA has to do with questions. Arqade has to do with questions about games.

and we shouldn't get too tied to one name, because the odds are still against us being able to buy it

so the '.com' isn't absolute?

7:20 PM
@NickT the .com is very important

it'd have to be really awesome to not be a .com

@Ullallulloo That doesn't strike me as a particularly obvious connection to make.

and some TLDs are completely out, like .ly

like I said, you can make a suggestion if you want to, but the chances we will go with something besides a .com are slim

@DavidFullerton @Lauren sure, but I'd figure that someone might come up with said awesome name

7:21 PM
Something like 'gamefaqs' (taken of course) would be ideal, because it specifically mentions 'faqs'.

@GnomeSlice I assume usually you'd write it as ArQAade or something to make it moreso.

@DavidFullerton What about .se? The scary restrictions on that one are gone

faqgames.com

FAE
@NickT Saying that out loud has the potential to sound obscene

gameq

7:22 PM
@FAE that was kind of the point

@NickT we have to be aware of the 'xbox factor'

FAE
@NickT Not sure that's the sentiment we'd want to go for :P Sounds like we don't care about them.

@NickT well even if that was the point, I like the idea of faq
not necessarily that name, but something with it

games + FAQ = gamefaqs.com which is a very different site

yes, FAQs is pretty loaded towards one site

7:23 PM
some sort of similar name would seem strange

IFAQs? Infrequently asked questions? :P

lol faqgames.com got flagged as spam/offensive

@NickT Yeah... I misread that as 'fapGames' which may or may not be something we want to be associated with...
@IanPugsley That tagline actually suits the site better than you might think. I sincerely like that.

so it both sounds obscene and can easily be misread two different ways for more obsceneness

@Rachel ....Why?

7:25 PM
@GnomeSlice No idea, it just gave me a little blue circle (like when someone pings me) in another chat room asking me if I agreed or disagreed with it

@AbbyTMiller what is the X-box factor

qamequrus

sounds to much like babies r us

Gamiaq

qaming.com

7:26 PM
QAming
@NickT ha!

@IanPugsley you suggest that before?

@IanPugsley gameifaqs.com? :)

@NickT nope

Apr 26 at 19:15, by Matthew Read
@Oak this is and gamigo have the same problem: people are going to make "gayquest" / "gaymigo" jokes. i think that's sad, but inevitable, given that our audience substantially overlaps with that of Xbox Live. by opening ourselves up to that we run the risk of alienating people who would get offended by it, even if it's not the core community that's being offensive.

Apr 27 at 20:17, by fredley
qaming.com

7:27 PM
@NickT aw butts

MOAR Qs!

@AbbyTMiller lol, :P

gamerz.com
games411
2

1900gametips.com

I still like gamestack.com best so far. It ties gaming with stack exchange while not being a mouthful to say

7:30 PM
dull name

sounds good though

not very memorable

Oh come on, why was that removed.

also, gamestop and gamespot are confusing enough as it is

yesterday, by badp
gamestack is quite the sad proposal. The very definition of 'least common denominator'
Apr 27 at 15:29, by StrixVaria
The more I think about gamestack, the less I like it.
26 mins ago, by FAE
@GnomeSlice I'm not that fond of Gamestack to be honest, it just doesn't... sound like anything to me.

7:32 PM
I like 'Gamestack' the most of the suggestions, but I don't really like it.
I think I still like 'GameCouncil' the most, actually.

eww no jedis allowed

@Rachel Because George Lucas clearly invented the 'council'.

Ben described my objections to the word Council perfectly in his answer here :)

PSA: please only star name suggestions, not jokes or comments on suggestions

How can I star older suggestions that don't show up in the box on the right?

I can read them by clicking the [show all] link, but can't add my stars

@Rachel use the permalinks to get to those messages in the transcript and you can star them there

@Rachel Go to the message, click the drop-down box, and click "Star as interesting".

@Ullallulloo Thank you :)

I haven't seen any suggestions I really, genuinely think are suitable for the site other than 'Game Council'.

7:42 PM
fair enough
anybody have thoughts about any of the other starred suggestions?

i like games411

why 411?

games + 411. Everyone is familiar with 411

FAE
@xaisoft That might go over the head of our international audience.

nop

7:43 PM
yeah ur right

@blem 411 is an information service

FAE
@Blem In the US, it's a number you can dial for information

in the 90s, it was a thing teen girls said to each other instead of "what's the scoop"
"what's the 411?"

information that is usually not very helpful , lol

FAE
@xaisoft Yeah, I don't think that's the image we want to give, haha

7:44 PM
so it is somethign teen girls say, it is only in the US and it is not very helpfull...

LET'S GO WITH IT

@FAE I don't even know it in the US, really.

IT SOUNDS PERFECT

I've heard it maybe once.
And I thought it was like 911...

911 is for help
it probably matches better than 411

7:45 PM
and 311 is for
other information?
what is the difference between 311 and 411

you could just ask gary

@AnnaLear Doesn't mean anything to me, in Canada.

FAE
@AbbyTMiller I... don't know... 311 is a band and 411 isn't?

I still like 1900gametips, a throwback to those old games where you could call toll numbers to get tips

311 might be just NYC

7:47 PM
$0.95/minute

1900mixalot

FAE
@AbbyTMiller ...curse you, now that's stuck in my head.

@NickT once again a US thing :/

muahaha

@Rachel But we don't drive to your house and help you beat bosses yet. =/

7:47 PM
gameinfoq

the US is the interwebs

cubeandbuttonbasedtesting.com

askgaming.com

askgaming is nice

gamingadvice.com
or seasonedgames/gamedifferent

7:49 PM
too much of a mouthful... would rather have gameadvice.com

both are backordered anyway

@Lauren both what?

askgaming and gamingadvice

how do you see backordered vs. parked

just search on godaddy

7:51 PM
@Rachel gameadvice.com redirs to reviews.gamewinners.com/data/index.php

gamhq
oops i mean gamehq

i first saw that as gamehaq
that would kind of make sense... "game hack" but it also looks like "faq"
idk

gameqa.com goes to some korean site

gamehq is taken tho

north or south korea

7:53 PM
I don't think "backordered" means anything
it might mean that godaddy registers it for you if it ever becomes free
but we're not going to wait for these domains to become free, we're going to buy them from the owner

right, so it's a domain sniping service

seems like that's what it means

we're not going to try to snipe these domains

FAE
I just want to say thanks to our CHAOS team for organizing this. I know we're a difficult community when it comes to that whole consensus thing and I appreciate you guys being willing to let us voice our opinions on this matter.

7:56 PM
@FAE we want to hear your input

wikigames

it is difficult to come to a consensus though, unfortunately
@xaisoft I like that idea, or gamewiki
if they were available! grrr

wiki is a term with a well-defined meaning that's quite different from what we do here

@AnnaLear still conveys the idea of information, but true

@Lauren I can just see hours of arguments from new users along the lines of "BUT IT SAYS WIKI IN THE URL". It'd be painful for all involved.

8:03 PM
aplacetoaskquestionsaboutgames.com

@AnnaLear I agree.

qame.com

@AnnaLear good point
I take it back!

Unfortunately covering all genres makes naming even harder, otherwise I'd be up for something like unfinishedquests.com. I was also thinking that something creative related to game case sleeves or instruction manuals would be kind of nifty, but then actually coming up with something resulted in epic fails.
2

@TimStone - I agree

8:05 PM
askga.me? kinda lame; someone else think up a better hack

i personally cannot stand domain hacks

gameon

hooray, the creative guy is here

achievementget.com
howdoi
though that is a bit too generic

games.edu; we could qualify as an educational institution, right?

8:09 PM
It must end in .com. Or has that changed?

it's not absolute, but strongly suggested

Here is a thought.. does the name have to be any more than a name.. Does it haev to say anything or can we pick any name we want and add the tag line: A StackExchange site for gaming.
Cause its really hard to fit 'a community driven QA site focused on proposing and solving questions for video games' into a .com and maybe we should stop trying.

@James you're welcome to make any suggestion you'd like - it must follow the "must" guidelines, the "should" guidelines are suggestions
made up words are ok to suggest

can we star a link to the meta post in here?

@James it's in the room description; not needed, adds clutter

8:11 PM
(And sorry if it seems like I am not listening I have to F5 my chat right now to get it to work)

FAE
@James It's in the room description

the whole "made up word" thing seems to wrankle lots of people

gamealot

let's keep the jokes to a minimum

sirgamealot / sergamealot

that was my next one

I like big games and I cannot lie.

@AbbyTMiller echoing punny jokes could lead to something different though
anyways, bike time

@NickT true, for sure
this is why i really only quash my own dumb jokes with back to topic hammers :)

8:17 PM
1up

I was going to suggest eightbitanswers.com, but I feel like people might take that as us having bad answers. :P
3

@TimStone w/e, as a brand that's fine

anyway, gang, thank you very much for your contributions this afternoon. i'm heading off to go try to get other more boring work done and i think the other employees are soon as well, but feel free to continue spitballing in here.

gamejungle

Sorry all, the simple ones I can come up with seem to be registered to sites that have their domains marked as transfer prohibited or would be like $800 cause someone is sitting on them.

8:23 PM
@James if they're good suggestions we can look into buying them
so, feel free to throw it out there

I was thinking gamesource.com and game-source.com is up for resale.

gamesource isn't bad
we'd prefer to stay away from hyphens tho

put ideas on separate lines so people can star them individually

8:40 PM
gamesource makes us sound like a retailer

@AnnaLear alot of games
@Lauren gamewikiforumblogreddit

8:59 PM
thanks for participating in the chat everyone! I am heading out now, but feel free to come back tomorrow at 3 pm EST to continue this conversation.

and please continue to brainstorm names in our absence -- having one idea that you like isn't enough, since we may not be able to get it

10:30 PM
CriticalAnswers or CriticalQuestions - both taken, but look to be genuinely on sale for ~$1,600 each.

@authenticgeek CriticalHITAnswers.

They're all a bit too long, I think
answerarcade.com is available
4
I like arcade because it's a community space for games
And the alliteration makes it fun

@Krazer there's a webcomic with that name, i'd be iffy about it

10:51 PM
@authenticgeek I like that, actually.

@GnomeSlice The more I think about it, the more I like it.
