I'm thinking of doing some blog-type self answers.. Dunno what to write them on, though :/ Any ideas?

Q: How do I ask homework questions on Chemistry Stack Exchange?

Manishearth Under construction; mainly copied from http://meta.physics.stackexchange.com/q/714/7433 Feel free to make your own edits, but if you have a new idea, it is preferable to post it here. Or use comments on this post. What is the policy on asking homework questions on Chemistry Stack Excha...

@Fx What's your general feeling on comments? I notice you are cleaning many of them up. I don't mind helping if I know what you're looking for.

@jonsca Comments are ephemeral, meant to notify users of possible improvements--delete 'em if they have been incorporated into the question.
Which reminds me, I completely forgot about comment cleanup
But yeah, Fx's opinion would be better here
Btw, @jonsca, use @@30@chemistry.stackexchange.com to ping F'x; or use a message reply. The apostophe makes normal chat pings not work

@Manishearth I definitely know about their ephemeral nature, I just didn't know if he had a policy. What you say about whether they've been incorporated into the question makes sense.

@jonsca Hmm, yeah, let's wait for it
He's been a mod much longer than we have :)
@fx See above^

@manish I was a mod on the ill-fated Healthcare IT for about 5 months, so I have some sense of it, but yes, that's true
I was largely doing it by myself, though, so I'm self-taught hehe

@jonsca K, I see. So I'm the "youngest" mod, both literally and figuratively :P
How did you notice that fx was deleting comments?
I don't see any such page in /admin/ O_0.. or did you just notice it on a few posts that you were looking at?

10:10 AM
@Manishearth Go to the mod menu on the main site, then go to the last column of the grid ("view recent...")

Ahh

It's good if you want to see the nature of the flags that were attended to in the past

@jonsca Yep
Hmm, looking at them tells me what we're looking for (sort of)
I'll read through 'em when I get time

Yeah, I just wanted to verify and see if he needed help doing it. We definitely have the manpower

What do y'all feel about closing chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/317/…?

@Manishearth It's already got 3 VtC, so it would not hurt
What would be the reason, it is technically on topic

Boom
Aah, a double-CV from me :)

It's probably ok

OK as in?
OK for the site?
If you feel that it's OK for the site, go ahead and reopen.. I wasn't too sure of closing it, that's why I asked here :/
has to leave

@Manishearth Nono, okay that you're on there twice
Otherwise, I can reopen and close it if you're worried

12:41 PM
@jonsca I know that, it happened to me a few times on my first day of modship
@jonsca I was leaning towards close, just wanted some opinion
Not worried :)

okay, later, then

Basically the justification comment on that post hadn't been replied to.. But yeah, it's offtopic
Cya

F'x
@jonsca on the moderator scale of "how aggressively do you pursue comment clean-up", I'm rated at "very aggressively" :)
as Manishearth said, if comments have been incorporated, I delete

@Fx Okay, I'll be on the lookout then

F'x
@jonsca but I'm completely open to another policy being decided upo… that's just my "default" mode

12:46 PM
How long do you usually wait? I noticed some of the posts you were removing comments from were older

F'x
also, if a comment discussion brings no value to a question or answer, I'll tend to remove it after some time
fresh comments are somewhat good, in that they allow one to clarify things, ask follow-up questions etc.
but once the dust has settled, they no longer serve a purpose
unless they contain additional information, such as “I tried your suggestion and it worked fine” or that kind of stuff

@Fx That's very true. Have you been going through systematically or just ones that you run across?

1 hour later…
1:57 PM
@Fx Alright, makes sense--I'll try to follow these guidelines

2:14 PM
(I think they were the ones in my mind anyway, maaybe less aggressive)

This may be offtopic chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/546/… . What say?

@Manishearth Yeah, I thought it had to do with skin oils, so perhaps if someone answered in that regard it would be okay. It's a little bit of a physics question, though, if that's what you're going for

@jonsca Yeah, exactly. I'd consider it in the overlap, since van der walls/induced dipoles/etc are more chemistry

Tag it with "nose-induced antigravity" "homework" and then migrate it to physics. Bwahaha.

@Aesin :P
@Ashu hey there :)

hi

3:35 PM
So we keep the question. I could do some research and find the answer, but not now :P

@Manishearth thanks

(I also assume it's due to enhanced surface contact due to skin oils or condensed water and skin oils if you try and steam it up first. It's probably not really chemistry, but I'm not sure it really fits anywhere better either.)
(Unless there's a specific "materials science" stackexchange I don't know about.)

@Aesin It ends up at Van der Wals/adhesive forces/induced-dipole/etc interactions. It's in the overlap of Phy/Chem.SE, but it's better here due to the dipole stuff

Bio, maybe?

I suspect we're going to have a bit of trouble with
@Ashu I don't think so, the question deals with a physical interaction. The only bio-related things are the nature of the skin oils (which are so on-topic here), and the human, which isn't really that important.

3:39 PM
@Manisheart: Probably with some of the crystally things too. The places where physicists lurk in chemistry departments.

@Aesin Yeah, we do have lots of overlap regions. Up to us to work out boundaries.

3:52 PM
@Manishearth well, i think i found the answer
see pt 1.57

@Ashu You can self answer if you want

Nah, let someone else do it.

@Ashu I may do it if I get time tomorrow, then :)

Sure! :)
