@Fx What's your general feeling on comments? I notice you are cleaning many of them up. I don't mind helping if I know what you're looking for.

@jonsca Comments are ephemeral, meant to notify users of possible improvements--delete 'em if they have been incorporated into the question.

Which reminds me, I completely forgot about comment cleanup

But yeah, Fx's opinion would be better here

Btw, @jonsca, use @@30@chemistry.stackexchange.com to ping F'x; or use a message reply. The apostophe makes normal chat pings not work

@Manishearth I definitely know about their ephemeral nature, I just didn't know if he had a policy. What you say about whether they've been incorporated into the question makes sense.

I was largely doing it by myself, though, so I'm self-taught hehe

How did you notice that fx was deleting comments?

I don't see any such page in /admin/ O_0.. or did you just notice it on a few posts that you were looking at?

How long do you usually wait? I noticed some of the posts you were removing comments from were older

also, if a comment discussion brings no value to a question or answer, I'll tend to remove it after some time

fresh comments are somewhat good, in that they allow one to clarify things, ask follow-up questions etc.

but once the dust has settled, they no longer serve a purpose

unless they contain additional information, such as “I tried your suggestion and it worked fine” or that kind of stuff

@Fx That's very true. Have you been going through systematically or just ones that you run across?

@Manishearth Yeah, I thought it had to do with skin oils, so perhaps if someone answered in that regard it would be okay. It's a little bit of a physics question, though, if that's what you're going for

(I also assume it's due to enhanced surface contact due to skin oils or condensed water and skin oils if you try and steam it up first. It's probably not really chemistry, but I'm not sure it really fits anywhere better either.)

(Unless there's a specific "materials science" stackexchange I don't know about.)

@Aesin It ends up at Van der Wals/adhesive forces/induced-dipole/etc interactions. It's in the overlap of Phy/Chem.SE, but it's better here due to the dipole stuff

I suspect we're going to have a bit of trouble with physical-chemistry

@Ashu I don't think so, the question deals with a physical interaction. The only bio-related things are the nature of the skin oils (which are biochemistry so on-topic here), and the human, which isn't really that important.
