@orthocresol ooh, alright, I'll be careful, thanks!

12:37 AM
@orthocresol why not put a featured tag on that books happy question?
@pentavalentcarbon if they really cared about their questions getting answered - and assuming they made a reopen attempt but it failed - why didn't they take this on meta? We have had users in the past who have made well reasoned meta posts citing proper evidence, and those have mostly been positively received. Latest was by Bennett.
Writing such comments instead is just non constructive criticism :(
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ done, but I now wonder why we do not have a general OCR facility in the fist place. Many posters here on Chem.SE ask good questions but with screenshotted questions, it would help if they could be OCRed as well.

1:18 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ do you have a creative suggestion for a new username for me? :P I just realized I am one of the very few people who actually use their real name in the user name, and given that my name is not at all pronounceable for foreign people, it makes sense to change my username. Question is: what do I change it to? I thought of "Post Editor", because that's mostly what I like doing, but do you have other interesting suggestions?
And anyone else too, please feel free to drop your views on what you think could be my new username. Thanks! :-)

@GaurangTandon Assume the least amount of knowledge with good intentions: that people haven't taken the tour, that people don't know what meta is or that it even exists, and so on. Ignorance can be strong even if they're receptive to those resources because you don't always know what you don't know.
Sure, plenty of the comment is wrong, but I don't think it's intentionally misguided.

Hmm, yes, that is very plausible

3:50 AM
@GaurangTandon OCR ing is not exactly 100 percent accurate you end up investing a lot of time correcting it

@AvnishKabaj doesn't the %age of errors depend on the software you use for OCR? In any case, manual correction of OCRed text is a lot easier than reading and writing from image text.

Anonymous
@AvnishKabaj It is easier for short texts. For longer texts, it is difficult finding out the mistakes and correcting them.

I scan the images.
That's enough for homework questions.

4:44 AM
@GaurangTandon that'd be the lamest username in the history of lame usernames
Depends on your taste @Gau. A common choice is chemical names, as you've noticed. A good online convention is Adj + first name or last name. You could also go for really modest or really flashy options
My little brother's username
His choice
You could also choose stuff that kinda mocks or disproves high school chem
Or really exotic stuff
Or both
Diborane or trihydrogen are good options

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ emoji with embedded mandelbrot fractal and name supernoob!

@Mithoron A German mod, even

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hmm, nice, though still what? I'm really bad at thinking of creative names :'(
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ i knew :P

@pentavalentcarbon This community has become crazy. The good Q/bad Q ratio on the front page didn't use to be 1 to 3
@pentavalentcarbon Too broad is correctly applied on, say, 60 percent of the questions it's being applied to

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hmm, do you have an example where it's misapplied?

4:59 AM
It shares a me-no-likey sentiment with the HW close reason

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hmm, why "Adj"?

@GaurangTandon I'll give you one next time I find one in the CV queue

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ok. but give me a username first please

6 mins ago, by M.A.R. ಠ_ಠ
Diborane or trihydrogen are good options

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ okay, i'll think about it for a day or two
let me go through my chem textbook as well, and look for some interesting chemicals

5:01 AM
Or benzenamide, since you got really hung up on that

ha, yeah

@GaurangTandon You could also go for Bucky Balls, but whoever doesn't know what that is, will interpret it in an interesting way

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ o.O
i'm afraid to even google it, what is it?

@orthocresol who? O.o
@GaurangTandon the C60 fullerene is also referred to as buckyball

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ oh my god xD

5:04 AM
Or balls. I dunno, I didn't count them
It's probably rude

i already dropped that

Q: Does NaOH react with K to form NaOK or KOH?

DucFabulousI realized that the $\ce{-OH}$ group when it reacts with some metal like $\ce{Na}$ or $\ce{K}$ will replace the $\ce{H}$ element to form $\ce{-OK}$ or $\ce{-ONa}$: \begin{align} \ce{H2O + Na &-> NaOH + H2}\\ \ce{CH3OH + Na &-> CH3ONa + H2}\\ \ce{H2O + K &-> KOH + H2}\\ \end{align} S...

Q: Prevention of unnecessary edits of old posts.

NotEvans.The issue of unnecessary edits has been brought up many times here, both on meta and in chat. The "Hidden points of editing you probably didn't know" post puts it fairly succinctly: In any event, do not edit lots of old or low-quality posts at the same time so as to flood the main page wit...

While the content of this meta post is essentially the same as what was brought up last month, the tone of this meta post is much more sensible...

Is it time to revive this?

Q: Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote

LordStrykerI don't have to link to any particular posting. Just check the main page. Posts are not receiving enough votes. Responses are not receiving enough votes. We need to vote. Even if you aren't contributing relevant and useful information to the community, a vote goes a long way in encouraging ...

@GaurangTandon five votes a day keeps the downvotes away

@obackhouse I know essentially nothing about Jmol, only Avogadro 1 + 2, IQmol, and VMD. I guess I can suffer my way through Molden and Jmol but nothing fancy.
@GaurangTandon Because those of us who use DOI links never saw this. I have always used dx. How did you come across this?

ah ok no problem

@pentavalentcarbon I was just trying to understand how doi works. Not more than two Google searches led me to this page :/

Ah, I guess I just knew how it worked. Must have discovered it a few years ago, when definitely as the article says, you needed the dx for resolution.

@GaurangTandon I don't think that you need to be alarmed

@pentavalentcarbon yes, this is a slightly recent change

2:11 PM
@GaurangTandon Hopefully I don't need to say that even though we should make all new links without dx, we shouldn't edit old posts just to remove the dx.

@AvnishKabaj why? If regulars post content but not vote, it won't be healthy for our site. Read that meta post I linked, and also the TeX meta post linked within it.

$\mathrm{d}x$

@pentavalentcarbon oh well, I think it was obvious, but I was definitely not even thinking about that!

@GaurangTandon A lot of people would probably think otherwise...

Of course, my edit history has always been a bit rough -_-

Mathjax doesn't work on the mobile site

@AvnishKabaj `dx`
It should be Markdown verbatim face.

@pentavalentcarbon today was a busy day. have a look at the edits if you wish to though, not more than 4 old posts were exclusively bumped by me. Of course, I can't prove this to the dozens of other people who view the front page :(

2:15 PM
People who use this site on mobile boggle my mind.

That's very odd. Usually means a missing font in the OS.

@AvnishKabaj how do you get the i.stack url on mobile? I can upload an image to imgur.com, but never get it to embed here on chat

@AvnishKabaj I mean on a phone or tablet in general.
I just bought a Chromebook to mess around with, and editing on it is hell.

@pentavalentcarbon those hard, indestructible, low-power pieces of junk

@pentavalentcarbon and you moved from which device to a Chromebook?

In general, it seems quite nice. It's an Asus C101PA with a 6-core ARM chip. Pretty responsive. My problem with it is that the wifi chip sucks and the trackpad fake clicks on Linux.

Can someone link me to a question or answer with the current preferred way of doing footnotes?
I don't know if I have an example on me

I don't know if there's a preferred way

I know, but I can't remember how you do it. Do you use {\small 1. I am footnote text}?

 like this?

I used to use 1. xxx
However, Martin doesn't like that because it takes up the same amount of space as 1. xxx but also makes it harder to read.
I agreed, so nowadays I just use 1. xxx

And then just I am body text.1?

3:16 PM
Yup, or on occasion I use blahblah assertion.\[1\]
I'm quite inconsistent

I've complained about this before but it sucks. I should see how Pandoc Markdown does it. The GitHub-flavored Markdown hacks don't work here.
Depending on what Pandoc does, I may do a .

@pentavalentcarbon i wished to make a meta post about this (cc @orthocresol earlier discussion on Spring Cleaning)

@orthocresol is there a way to get this tag off the front page without actually blacklisting it like it happened with ?
otherwise, people will just assume that - among other uses - one of the uses of this site is getting their homework solved
on a side note, [homework] still has 1316 occurrences in open questions, it'll probably take us 2020 to get rid of that completely :'(
