12:14 AM
Hey, guys :-) I've a very quick question.

user228700
When comparing the stability of two organic compounds attached to a heteroatom, what characteristics must I look for? Seriously, things like "possesses vacant d-orbital to stabilize charge" (in case of a negatively charged carbon) etc.?

@Kaumudi The simple characteristics are electronegativity and lone pairs. Next you should check possible resonance structures.

user228700
Why lone pairs?

@Kaumudi any lone pairs on the heteroatom

user228700
Why..? To draw possible canonical structures?

12:25 AM
Yes, the lone pairs could participate in resonance structures.

What should be the ratio of the concentration of chlorous acid, HClO 2, and potassium chlorite, KClO 2, to give a buffer solution with pH = 3.82? Ka = 1.0x10-2.
How to assemble expressions to relate substances?

user228700
Right. Okay, thanks :-) Can u help me w/ a quick homework-tsy problem? I've been asked to compare the stability of the following two structures. Only 2 resonance structures are possible for both and the only condition to be checked is the inductive effect, apparently, but I'm unable to understand it:

Any?

user228700

12:31 AM
@user32720 Do you know the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation?
@Kaumudi Is there a negative charge on those -CH2 groups?

user228700
Clearly, the -I effect exerted by F is more than that exerted by Cl, but how does that matter?

user228700
Yes, there is a negative charge on it and damn, I've just realized that no resonance structures are possible for either.

@Loong yes I know
But how will I relate the two substances?

user228700
Well, I guess that the inductive effect sort of makes sense, here.

user228700
It does, it definitely does.

user228700
12:34 AM
Nvm :-)

@Kaumudi It matters, because a localized charge is not so nice. You could stabilize the ion if you delocalize or distribute the charge more over the entire molecule.

@Loong Can you help me?

@user32720 HClO2 is an acid. KClO2 is a salt of this acid. So ClO2- is the corresponding base.
@user32720 The Henderson–Hasselbalch equation is: pH = pKa + log([base]/[acid])

@Loong So HCl02 + H20 --> KCl02 + H3O^+

@user32720 where did that K come from in your equation?

user228700
12:39 AM
@Loong Yep, OK, thankss :-)

@Loong You did not say it was an acid salt?

@user32720 Yes, KClO2 is a salt. The acid–base reaction is HClO2 + H2O <=> ClO2^- + H3O^+
or short: HClO2 <=> ClO2^- + H+

@Loong And where does K appear?

In solution, the salt KClO2 will dissociate into K^+ + ClO2^-
So the K^+ is not relevant for the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation.

user228700
Wokay, I think I've another quick question, very much related to what I asked a few minutes ago. When considering these heteroatoms connected to a negative charge on the carbon, am I to look for that atom that exhibits the -I effect to a larger extent or that one, which can accommodate the negative charge through resonance? Resonance effect is more important, no? But what if no resonance structures are possible?

user228700
12:44 AM
(Eg: $CCl_3^-$ vs. $CF_3^-$

user228700
Even tho $F$ exhibits the -I effect to a larger extent, $CCl_3^-$ is more stable because $Cl$ has d-orbitals, capable of "stabilizing the negative charge" but how will it be stabilized if no resonance structures are possible? )

@Kaumudi Yes, if resonance effects are possible, they are usually more important than inductive effects. However, if no resonance structures are possible, you cannot use resonance to stabilize the compound.

user228700
So what about that example that I've given?

@Kaumudi Hm, I'am not so sure whether the d-orbitals of Cl can really effectively stabilize the charge.

user228700
Without resonance, how would they be able to stabilize the charge?

12:51 AM
We have this:
5
Q: How to prove that CHCl3 is more acidic than CHF3?

Sujith SizonUsing the concept that Inductive effect becomes dominant than Resonance (mesomeric) in case of halide substituents: (1) Since both have single hydrogen, lets compare stability of carbanions $\ce{CF3-}$ and $\ce{CCl3-}$. (2) Since fluorine shows more negative inductive effect than chlorine, $\c...

However, there is no clear authoritative answer.

Then the equation would be:
PH = pKa-log [ClO2 -] / [HCl02]?

@user32720 pH = pKa + log([base]/[acid]) or pH = pKa - log([acid]/[base])
HClO2 is the acid here; ClO2^- is the base.

@Loong It seems your patience knows no bounds ;)

user228700
> "While in $C_Cl3^-$, chlorine has an empty d orbital thus the negative will be more dispersed into the this empty orbital hence the repulsions will be quite less as compared to $C_F3^−$"

user228700
What is this "dispersion"?

@Kaumudi Hm, I'am not so sure whether the d-orbitals of Cl can really effectively stabilize the charge.

@Loong Thank you for your help

@Kaumudi I think you should give poor Loong a break

@user32720 ok? Can you do the rest now?

Melanie ShebelI don't mind guiding users in The Periodic Table with their homework. If I get a question or two, I'll discuss it with the person. @Abcd, nope. I might point out a few rules of chat etiquette that'll help you out though. 1. No need to ask if you can ask, just ask =) 2. Don't randomly ping people; that just annoys people. 3. If some can and wants to help, they will. Good luck with your question!
@Mithoron yeah, they make the rules ;-)

Q: Chlorous acid buffer calculation

user32720How can I calculate this: What should be the ratio of the concentration of chlorous acid, HClO 2, and potassium chlorite, KClO 2, to give a buffer solution with pH = 3.82? Ka = 1.0x10-2. How to assemble expressions to relate substances?

@Mithoron oh, I didn't see that :-|

user228700
@Mithoron If u notice, I didn't ping anybody except when I was directly replying to Loong.

@user32720 Asking here after posting isn't so good

@Kaumudi don't worry, it's ok, your questions are fine
@Mithoron you summoned @Melanie :-)

@Loong sorry I did not know

@Loong I was just writing about summoning :D

@user32720 don't worry; you are new on this site. We are here to answer your conceptual questions. However, please note that we are not a service to do your homework for you. :-)

I want a photoshop of the members of ICP holding an ICPMS and like showing it off to the crowd

user228700
This room seems to be attracting a lot more homework questions than is common in other rooms, such as The h Bar.

@gannex I always liked working with the ICP-MS. The best thing was the sound of the starting turbomolecular pump. :-)

I've never used one. I'm reading a book that really promotes it
ICPMS is like the answer to everything

@Kaumudi I think, the h bar has more questions, but they are better hidden between the discussions about sophisticated theoretical physics.
@gannex almost everything, yes

user228700
1:23 AM
Perhaps. In my experience tho, the homework questions are entertained over there because in the case of physics, (unless it's a completely numerical question) even homework questions help lead to amazing discussions about concepts.

@Loong do you know a lot about ICPMS then?

@gannex No, not a lot. I have only used one during my diploma thesis.

ah ok
I am trying to write up a procedure for an ICPMS determination
but I'll just consult my book some more

Yes? :P
Ahem @Loong @Mithoron have you awoken a sleeping giant with homework questions?
(I'm the sleeping giant.) However, I'm neither asleep or giant. :P

@MelanieShebel Hm, your profile doesn't describe you as a giant.

No, I'm pale, awkward, and small.

@MelanieShebel You are pale? So your avatar is a colour picture? (No, please don't hurt me, dear giant!) ;-)

Maybe miniature giant space Melanie :D

Isoroku Yamamoto's sleeping giant quotation is a quote by the Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto regarding the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by forces of Imperial Japan. The quotation is portrayed at the very end of the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora! as: I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. The quotation is also featured in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor. Although the quotation may well have encapsulated many of his real feelings about the attack, there is no printed evidence to prove Yamamoto made this statement or wrote it down. == Overview == The...

@hBy2Py after waking up I went out, but I saw your comment. 1) I also somewhat dislike how the review queue leads to some degree of tunnel vision. If you want to suggest improvements, I'd point you in the direction of meta.SE, and if you choose to do so I will gladly lend my support.
2) As I mentioned, there should be a automatic moderator flag if a question is rolled back twice by the same user, so rollback wars should in theory already be picked up by this. I strongly suspect that the issue here was that there was a non-rollback edit (by Melanie) sandwiched between the two rollbacks, so we did not see this. The non-rollback edit was in effect a rollback, but the system isn't smart enough to detect that. [...]
[...] all in all I strongly believe that this is an edge case with a number of contributing factors which meant that we were not explicitly notified. We will try our very best to catch such stuff, but especially as the site grows, there will always inevitably be some stuff that slips through. I do wish that this was avoided, but I really cannot guarantee that it will never happen again in the future; that's a promise that we cannot 100% uphold because we are all human.
(and because we haven't yet figured out how to train computers to be human :D)
And that's also partly why meta exists - to resolve conflicts.

@orthocresol The aggressiveness with which the SO overlords stomp on most ideas makes me hesitant to ever suggest anything.
Most of the time it's probably stuff that they've already thought of, and/or have already declined to implement after other people suggested it.
@orthocresol I agree, this was probably an extreme edge case, as you say due to the non-consecutive rollbacks foiling the automatic system.

It can be a little unfriendly, that is true.

@hBy2Py And, as such, it's probably not worth changing the system in response to it.
Primarily, I'm glad the OP got to see the meta discussion model of the SE network in action, and was impressed by it:
The amount of effort here to improve the site blows my mind. Thanks Martin and @Curt F. . I believe you provided a good and accurate summary of what I intended. Much appreciated. One final note. I believe the whole firestorm was initiated because someone thought it was homework. Believe it or not, I've actually worked in a scientific lab for 12 years and it has been a long time since I've done homework :) I just have always been frustrated with these abbreviations. If I were again a budding scientist, I'd appreciate this SE question. Again, thanks for all the thought! — kdauria 7 hours ago

I think Chemistry is doing quite well. :)
(might be biased, but yeah)

5:40 AM
I saw the edit war you were involved in. That was a little nasty

We're fortunate - a hard science that politics doesn't often intrude into any more.
@orthocresol I set a bad tone by foolishly including a couple of links to Amazon when I first posted.
I debated over whether to include them, but it was pertinent to the point I was trying to make.
And, subsequently got accused of spamming.
Which was entirely reasonable, so I edited out the unintended, but real, 'product placement'.
After that, things went downhill pretty quickly.
It was one of my first major posts on the site, if not the first, so I had 'newbie stink' on me.
And the one mod just got really cheezed. Carped at me that what I'd written would've been obvious to any practicing EE.
Couple of comments back and forth in the thread on my answer (long since removed by the other mod), and off we went to the rollback races.
As soon as he re-made his edit, after I rolled his first edit back, was when I should've taken it to meta.
But I just couldn't believe the guy was actually doing it.
I got into the "ok, dude, I can keep this up just as long as you can" state of mind
.... but then he re-added his content and locked the post, and that ended the edit war.
At which point I finally went to meta.
As you saw, he got chewed on pretty hard by everybody else after that.

It gets rather complicated when a moderator is involved, because we can always be perceived as acting unfairly. You also can't flag for moderator attention, because if a mod thinks he is right, he will simply dismiss the flag. I can see that in our case here, there was certainly potential for it to be misconstrued, especially when jonsca locked in the abridged version.

<nod>
But that's the point where a mod needs to keep their cool, realize they're stuck in a conflict of interest, and choose to let another mod ... moderate.
And hey, whaddaya know, good old Nick is still up to his shady shenanigans:

Q: Is it common for moderators to review the flags issued on their own posts?

PasserbyIs it common for moderators to review the flags issued on their own posts? Isn't that an abuse of power?

Ahaha..

So. Glad. None of you mods have the power issues he does.
This comment really captured it, I thought:
An edit war initiated by a mod? JFC. — Passerby Mar 2 at 1:29

5:50 AM
I didn't like writing back in an upset tone, but I was upset that it was being framed as moderation.

<nod>, looking back at the edit history, it was definitely not an edit war. The whole thing spanned months.

It seems that the issue is resolved now, though.

But if one is upset about it and doesn't absorb the timeline of it... I can understand Curt's having seen it that way, and being upset about it.
<nod>
I think it was addressed quite well.
The site worked.
Unrelated, why are we both up right now?

> ammonium iron(III) citrate
Does the figure III mean that the valence of Iron here is 3?
> Ammonium ferric citrate has the formula (NH4)5[Fe(C6H4O7)2]
I don't get it: judging by the formula, the valence of Iron is six
because the citrate ion has the oxidation number -3, and there's the subscript "2"

@CowperKettle That "citrate ion" has charge -4, not -3
Neutral citric acid is C6H8O7
So, this ion is C6H4O7(4-)
So the total negative charge is -8.

And Fe has (+3)

The positive charge to balance it out comes from the ammonium (five 1+ charges), and the iron (a 3+ charge - which is what you're looking for).

So the total is -5
so the figure III after all relates to the (+3) of the iron? that's odd

Mmhmm. It refers to the oxidation state of iron.
So, for example, copper(II) chloride is CuCl2 whereas copper(I) chloride is CuCl.

9:40 AM
ah, so we just point out to the readed that iron here is not +2 but +3
to make the reader more comfortable

Also to avoid ambiguity, because simply saying "copper chloride" could mean either one of those. :)

It has been loong time since I delved into this stuff.

paracresolI often come across the term "Vitamin B Complex" in my biology classes and at the back of multivitamin packets, but what does the term "Complex" here, even mean? @Cowper o/

@paracresol good afternoon!

@paracresol biochemistry.
structural-biology is different, for the most part it's concerned with large biomolecules
e.g. proteins, or DNA
organic-chemistry is debatable, I don't see the organic link
food-chemistry might be relevant in a way because these are taken as nutritional supplements.
Honestly though, if we do not have good tags for it, it might be worth considering the option that it belongs on another SE site better.
For example, biology.SE has the tags biochemistry, micronutrients, and vitamin, as well as terminology, all of which apply here.
Personally I think even biochemistry is debatable
which leaves us with three good tags + one questionable tag on bio.SE, and two questionable tags on chem.SE

10:30 AM
Hello everyone. I have a question regarding duplicates. If the answer to a question in chem SE can be found in another SE, can it be closed as a duplicate? Why or why not?

@CowperKettle Oooh, afternoon! Where are you from? (I rarely run into sensible people from my time-zone) ._.
@orthocresol Isn't for biochemical processes?
(Something like that in the Tag Wiki ._.)
!!img/thiamine

@paracresol well this isn't a biochemical process
ultimately it's a terminology question, I suppose. Anyway, I took the liberty to edit the tags myself. Tag wiki descriptions are often poorly written, don't take them too literally. If there was one subset of chemistry I had to put this into, I would certainly go with biochem.

@paracresol Yekaterinburg, Russia

@QuantumAMERICCINO No, it can't. There's no provision for such a closure. That said, if there exists a duplicate on another site, there's a good chance that it's off-topic to begin with.
