Does anyone know how to disable the site's custom keyboard shortcuts for inside text boxes? For example, Ctrl+B inserts **strong text**, and I want it to stop.
I guess if it's in a single JS file I can block it, though I'd prefer a setting somewhere.

Q: Is it a bad idea to have an edit only be the addition of the homework tag?

pentavalentcarbonOften when cruising the latest questions or working through the review queue, I'll make an edit that only adds homework. I see two problems, the first very minor, the second potentially insidious. Is this too minor of an edit? Is it safe to make the assumption that a post is homework? I argu...

Quick question; we don't see "anti-aromatic compounds" in the "classification of organic compounds" tree diagram.

user228700
Is this because the same reason that Zhe was talking about 'sterday?

@pentavalentcarbon There is a setting, if I am not wrong. meta.stackexchange.com/q/237166/312770

I got too excited

I don't know if it even reacts.
Well as a rule of thumb don't bother people unless it's important.

Well its important

9:14 AM
Important enough to ping everybody in the room?
If you can't find anything, chances are there's no reaction.

yes...for me...maybe not for you :-P

you can always ignore a ping :-P

There must be a reaction...i read it somewhere..cant find it now

either an alkene or an alkane is formed

Go and look it up then, I don't know. And I know that I sound grumpy, but real life doesn't work this way. People don't like being disturbed with things that aren't important to them.
Ping one person if you really want, but don't spam everybody in the room
It's just courtesy.

@orthocresol Maybe you are grumpy in real life too :-P !...btw when I am not able to solve any problem I keep calling up friends and teachers till I get an answer :-). Call me what you want...but I'm not gonna give up that attitude...and btw if people here are uncomfortable with just getting a ping...I will not ping multiple users from now onwards if that makes you happy . Cya.

@o-cresol I used the latex table today in one of my posts. It looks so good haha. I am so glad you edited that into my answer haha
@S007 nobody likes spam pings, man

Anonymous
@getafix I have a habit of pinging to draw attention. Maybe chat is not for me. I used to think this is a lively discussion forum where people love to ask and to answer and to discuss. But I am disappointed with the reaction. Again, I am sorry if I have irritated someone. I will avoid chat from now on.

@S007 quite a pessimistic step to avoid chat at all just because of one unpleasant moment

Anonymous
@DHMO Sorry, but really I did not enjoy the chat-room. Doesn't suit me maybe :-) Oh btw not just "one unpleasant moment". Anyway see you on the main site. Bbye!

user228700
10:54 AM
@DHMO Hm, yes...

user228700
@S007 It is. Just not all of the time. I usually wait around for around a day (at most) to get answers. In the meantime, this delay prompts me to try again and again to sometimes figure it out on my own!

user228700
@S007 Well, the difference b/w calling up friends is that they too often gain from the experience. Here, on the other hand, people have separate lives and I do imagine that perhaps it is a little annoying to ping. It's simply a courtesy. Please don't give up on chat simply due to this. This place lights up like a Christmas tree sometimes and we have very good discussions :-)

user228700
In any case, ur call. All the best! Bye :-)

Anonymous
It's not the delay that I am complaining about. The problem is the "don't disturb us attitude" even though I pinged only those users were online. Well, okay I won't ping anyone ever again here on chat.

user228700
Ah, I see. Like I said, I guess it's just courtesy.

11:02 AM
@S007 you pinged all of the users online

Anonymous
I felt that some really good organic chem guys are online...let me ping them to draw attention...i did'nt expect such a retaliation...btw not pinging is a courtesy ? They should remove it in that case

Anonymous
DHMO yes I did

user228700
I think it's OK to ping one person at a time. Eg: I often ping John Rennie at The h Bar because we have great discussions and he doesn't at all mind it.

Anonymous
What is wrong in pinging 3-4 users at a time ? Courtesy ? I do not see how.

Anonymous
They should remove multiple ping feature in that case

Anonymous
11:04 AM
If the feature is there it is meant to be used.

user228700
In fact, I think it's safe to say that he enjoys teaching me :-) I digress. The point is that yes, courtesy. Let me explain very quickly.

@S007 not everyone is here to teach you organic chemistry

user228700
Yes, that ^

user228700
The people here have different lives. Not everybody is preparing for JEE.

Anonymous
DHMO of course no one is here to teach me org...in school my friends are not there to teach me org...i just ask them if they know and if they have time they explain

user228700
11:06 AM
By pinging them, we are requesting them to answer us. This is what is perhaps frowned upon.

Anonymous
No one is requesting them to answer...that is a wrong notion

user228700
They have no obligation to answer our queries and we must wait to see if anybody will eventually clear them.

Anonymous
It's not like I'm holding them at gun point asking them to answer

Anonymous
they can answer if they are free

Anonymous
When did I say they have an obligation ?

user228700
11:08 AM
Not really. See, if they are online, it means they have seen ur question. If they haven't replied, it means they aren't free. It's as simple as that.

Anonymous
No. If they are online they might not have seen my question if they are on the main site

Anonymous
they might be doing some other stuff and later when they come back they might never spot my question

user228700
See, I myself have no problem if people ping me. But for other people, it is apparently disturbing. So I resort to patiently waiting. It's not like I can't do anything else while I wait!

Anonymous
My question may be hidden by a dozen other messages ...that's the reason I pinged

Anonymous
You are not getting my point

Anonymous
11:10 AM
Pinging is to make them aware that my question exists

user228700
Yes, about the hiding?

user228700
Have u seen the frequency of messages here? :-P

Anonymous
The frequency keeps varying throughout the day..sometimes reaching 30 messages per minute and sometimes 1 message in an hour

user228700
Anyway, I think that Orthocresol will be able to add to this conversation better. I do understand ur point but since I have no problems when people ping me, I don't get it that much either.

user228700
Since Orthocresol insists that it is spam, she/he will be able to tell u why this no pinging business does not really reflect a bad attitude towards learning.

Anonymous
11:13 AM
Neither do I. It's better if I avoid chat because our notions don't concur much. See you on the main site .Farewell .

user228700
Adios.

11:36 AM
@Kaumudi I don't mind someone individually pinging me. You've done it many times.
Meh, this is part of why I don't want to moderate.
It's not site policy or anything, just my opinion.
@S007 You are free to ping whoever you like, that is why the function is there. There is no rule forbidding it. If you think it is rude, then don't do it. If you think it isn't, then just continue doing it. I am just pointing out that pinging multiple users at the same time for something that doesn't concern them can very well be considered rude.
I don't want to discuss this anymore. You can do as you wish.

user228700
11:54 AM
@orthocresol Yes, I have :-P

@Kaumudi Unfortunately, I'm a he, by the way..

Anonymous
@orthocresol I understand that. Will avoid it in future. I hope you also understand that showing your grumpiness to fonce your opinion (as you were initially trying ) may as well be considered rude by some users. Avoid that. Everyone is different and I respect your opinion too.

Oh nice. A drama.

@S007 Right, yeah, sorry.
@M.A.R. I should shut up more, really.

Well, I read the stuff above.
@S007 you shouldn't ping random people in a room en masse.
Ortho is right, and he's not being grumpy at all.
Imagine what happened if you entered a meeting of chemistry teachers, and poked everyone so they answered your question.
That not good? So the same applies here.

12:04 PM
Eh, to be fair, I am. I do stand by what I said, but it probably could have been a bit nicer.

It's not good to ping a lot of people.
ESPECIALLY if it's to get attention on one of the main site posts, yours or not.

Anonymous
He himself said he is sounding grumpy if you care to read his messages. BTW the question I asked was in chat itself. Not on main site.

Anonymous
I just pinged the guys online so that they notice the question in chat which may later on be hidden by other messages

@S007 HIS being grumpy or not has nothing to do with what YOU shouldn't do.
@S007 And I'm asking you not to repeat it.
And that's only to avoid future drama.

Anonymous
Forcing your opinion by showing your grumpiness is considered rude by me

12:07 PM
@Kaumudi You don't. Others might.
@S007 Enforcing rules, rudely or not, is not wrong.
I don't either.
Heck, Jan mass-pinged me the other day.
And I frequent in another room infamous for its 'ping attacks' on regular users.
But if someone gets annoyed because you pinged them for no reason, you're at fault.

Rules ? Which rule ? It'seems not a site policy. Btw stop being the moral police here . I did not violate any rule

@S007 The implied chat rules.

Anonymous
Multi pinging is not against the rules

@M.A.R. should probably disengage.

12:09 PM
Most chat rules are written in the minds of the regulars.

Don't try to make your own rules here .

If you want to keep chatting, please adhere to the rules.
@S007 It's against social rules.

Q: Why do these frustrated Lewis pairs stop working?

Arabian Knight I'm a bit unsure of why these frustrated lewis pairs stop working in two instances: 1)When the groups on phosphorus are changed from 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 to Ph why is a polymer formed? 2)When the phosphorus donor atom is changed from P to N the compound reacts with H2 but is irreversible but when P is...

"frustrated Lewis pairs"

That is the name for them :D
They want to react in a Lewis acid-base fashion, but are too sterically hindered.

Well never heard of them

Is "frustrated" obviously a self-censorship of "fucking"?

@M.A.R. ?

user228700
@orthocresol :-P

To me, it comes off as "my stuff is important, everybody look at it and answer me"

@DHMO That's like saying I'm self-censoring 'effing cream' and say 'facial cream' instead

@M.A.R. yes?

Judging by the ridicule of that example you should be able to find out that it's NOT self-censoring.

user228700

Been there, done that.

user228700
@DHMO: Not today, my friend :-P Why, are u bored?

@Kaumudi yes and no

@DHMO I'll give you a question.

user228700
12:45 PM
Maybe I'll come back later with one...

@Kaumudi I don't even know how to achieve that with markdown

*Not right now.
*Not **right now**.

user228700
@M.A.R. What's "markdown"?

How do you rationalise the fact that the equilibrium constants for the reactions $\ce{2A <=> A2}$ and $\ce{4A <=> 2A2}$ are different?
@Kaumudi the fancy formatting syntax, like *xxx* for italics and **yyy** for bold

@Kaumudi The formatting thing you use to embolden or capitalize stuff here or on the main site.

12:48 PM
@orthocresol the former forward reaction means that two molecules of $\ce{A}$ combine to form one molecule of $\ce{A2}$
different mechanism

user228700
@M.A.R. Oh. It's the same as when u post questions...

Yes, I know.
But you manage to make it not work in an exciting way.

@DHMO But mechanism shouldn't affect the position of equilibrium, it's obviously the same reaction, no? Just one scaled by a factor of 2.

@orthocresol the equilibrium constant is not the position of equilibrium

ah, great

12:49 PM
at the position of equilibrium, the constants are still different but the expressions yield the same value
@orthocresol so i passed the test? :D

Hmm... well... sort of, I guess.

yay

The eqm constant reflects the position of eqm, in the sense that if eqm goes to the right, then eqm constant will increase
But it's not a quantitative reflection,

I see

so even though both reactions have the same position of eqm in the sense that the % of reactants consumed will be the same, the resulting eqm constants are different

12:51 PM
Are we asking, or are we answering?
Or maybe I'm seeing everyone as Orthocresol.

@M.A.R. he's testing me

Too bad I can't edit usernames in chat.

@orthocresol Well, you technically can.

user228700
@DHMO How does mechanism affect the equilibrium constant? Mechanism only affects the kinetics of the reaction, right?

@M.A.R. Trudat. I could
@M.A.R. It's actually pretty complicated, this question.

12:56 PM
@Kaumudi It's actually pretty complicated, this question.

@orthocresol Mhm
Someone should put it on Dainty Bounce.

user228700
The equilibrium constant gives a measure of how many moles of product we gain compared to how many we lose...

I'm really inclined to say it's not possible.

user228700
That's basically it, right?

Theoretically, the eqm constant only depends on the relative stability of reactants and products. It doesn't care how the reactant gets to the product (the mechanism).

user228700
12:57 PM
^

user228700
That's what I learnt too.

Note the adverb in the beginning.
'potentially', 'theoretically' etc. indicate that you're missing out on a lot of fun.

So, you could change the conditions under which a reaction is run, and that would affect the relative stability, e.g. by solvent-solute interactions. It may also affect the mechanism. So, both the eqm cst and the mechanism may change at the same time.
However, it wouldn't be right to conclude from that that it's the change in mechanism that is affecting the eqm cst.
I'd be inclined to agree that mechanism doesn't affect the eqm cst.
Might be wrong, been wrong many times, so...
@M.A.R. I could, but then that would make me write an answer...

Blasphemy

I do have some stuff to write about it, but it's a rather long answer and I probably only have time over the weekend.

A: Calcium carbonate and vinegar

jorge RosasWhat amount of dilution did you use for the vinegar? Make trials using less and less dilution each time, taking into account as well that the acetic acid content in the vinegar can be low. You can record that way the starting time and completion time for the reaction vs. vinegar dilution.
