8:00 PM
at least you kids have Minesweeper. we had to play Pong
or Zork

We do? I don't have Minesweeper
Kids of the previous decade did

true - i'm out of touch
not much of a gamer since the 1980s

Wait, how do we define 'kids'?

when you went to an arcade with a handful of quarters
kids are people younger than the person complaining about kids :)

Enzymes are ancienter than hoomins

8:02 PM
i'll buy that :)

@ToddMinehardt We played real darts in the controlled area. I was always afraid that I would have to write an accident report because of that.

@Loong Ouch my eye

@Loong - awesome! we weren't nearly as dangerous. i do love darts, though...

@ToddMinehardt except to yourselves

8:06 PM
@Rubisco That's why you should wear safety glasses in the lab.

i was there for that one - we had some organic chemists who kept setting the chemistry building on fire. us theorists were tired of getting sent outside with alarms all the time. the fire mentioned in the link cost about $13 million

Protection from German dragons . . . Got it
@ToddMinehardt Now that sounds like fun

> I'm surprised the building hasn't burned down by now.

the austin fire department actually stopped responding to fire alarms after that one, all the labs had to get their act together (put chemicals in properly labeled cabinets, etc.) - good times
there was a bromine spill....something involving ether and peroxides and a spark from a compressor...we also got raided by the FBI/DEA because some guy in the storeroom was selling P2P to people making methamphetamine

I know someone from undergrad who goes there for organic, the internet says he works for Stephen Martin...is that the same guy?

8:13 PM
Martin is the professor, yeah - big name in organic - that was his postdoc who started that fire by dumping sodium metal into a sink

Everyone I know of who's gotten in an accident of any kind has worked for a big-name professor. I wonder if there's a connection...

or potassium, i forget which, but he neutralized it in IPA for like an hour instead of overnight and poured it down the drain
probably

Worst we can do is spill our drinks everywhere (haven't done), break the printer (come close), or leave food out for the mice (other people in the office).

yeah, we were the same
hey @Wildcat!!

@ToddMinehardt =^.^=

8:16 PM
how are you?

tired :|

@ToddMinehardt Hi ToddMinehardt

hey @ringo
@Wildcat - no rest for the wicked

@Wildcat How does a cat turn into a tire?

or weary

8:18 PM
@ringo yo

@Rubisco somehow :O

I feel so welcomed here
Hello Chem.SE
You guys are great

!!greet/ringo

Welcome to The Periodic Table ringo! Here are our chat guidelines and it's recommended that you read them. If you want to turn Mathjax on, follow the instructions in this answer. Happy chatting!

@ringo o/

8:19 PM
hey @orthocresol!!

Hi Todd

how goes it

This room is so happening tonight, what's happening :D

hi @hBy2Py
yeah, it's a full room

@orthocresol They're appointing me as a mod.

8:19 PM
@Rubisco Well, in this case it was an intentionally small world. @penta is only a four hour drive from me.

I'm cold and tired and still have to do some laundry

@ToddMinehardt 'allo!

Only.

It's 3PM for me

@Rubisco Not on my watch

8:20 PM
It's almost midnight here

You guys remind me that time is an illusion

@ringo - you're central time?

9:20 pm

@Rubisco I would meet you for lunch too, except for the whole Atlantic Ocean and political intrigues thing.

3:20 p.m. here

8:20 PM
@orthocresol We'll take out your watch and do it on your wrist

anyone ever makes it to Austin, i'll buy you a taco and a margarita

@penta and I proudly representing the Eastern time zone, wot wot!

Americans...

Eastern? Get real

I've never seen this many Americans in the chat before.
mmmm EST

8:21 PM
I've never seen this many Iranians

BST best time zone

I have to look up "EST to UTC" every time.

proudly representing non-metric system of units, too
we're honorary Iranians

@ToddMinehardt Throws up

hahaha

8:22 PM
@ToddMinehardt I may need to see your diploma

transcripts available on-demand

Since we're feeling great and that's forbidden, let's talk about HW.

@Rubisco I think the experiment was a great idea, breaking us out of our rut.
In retrospect, it knocked me (at least) from VTC when I wasn't thrilled by a question, to just not doing anything to it.

Tell that to the Bavarian.

i liked it in the sense that we got a little more welcoming

8:25 PM
@Rubisco LET US HAVE OUR FUN

@Rubisco Too busy writing my nomination

Somebody unplug Ortho's internet cables

then again, i am the second highest VTC person on this site (ahem @Rubisco) so i tend to, well, VTC :)

That Rubisco
He's such a robo-reviewer

yeah i was wondering if we were gonna have any more nominees (i'm looking at you, @orthocresol)

8:26 PM
SSSSSHHH

@ToddMinehardt looks back

Kicks @Todd

whoa whoa whoa!

I've debated a lot about tossing my hat in, but I'm not going to this time. I can't be sure I'll have the time to spare to do the role justice.
Besides, I think @Rubi will probably be a lot more enthusiastic about it than I would.

Yes Todd, I believe we're both in Austin

8:28 PM
@hBy2Py Jadedly

@ringo - no kidding! if ever want to grab a beer of coffee, ping me - i'm todd.minehardt@gmail.com - i'm in Bouldin Creek

I envy the lack of a number in Todd's email address.

My email address also doesn't have a number.

turns out my last name got mangled back when my grandparents were emigrating. there's me and a distant relative with the same name (different middle initial) so I can't get away with anything online ;)

That's only because seals are primitive and don't have many email addresses.

8:30 PM
I don't think seals have fingers.

He's typing with his nose. And belly.

Pointy belly?

Dunno. Do I look like a seal?

Then why would you suggest it?
It doesn't make sense.

@ToddMinehardt There are three other people with my first and last name that I know of: (1) an Australian spelunker and poet, (2) a Canadian cancer researcher, and (3) a realtor in Montana.

8:31 PM
@Rubisco `(.•.)´

yes, yes, "enzymes don't have brains"

@pentavalentcarbon *Brians
He's here

@hBy2Py - you're in good company. My guy is a hydrologist, so I don't mind getting confused for him...

@hBy2Py My first name is incredibly common, so there's actually a lot of people with my name...

Yeah, I finally changed my name here after @Mart complained about how hard a time he had trying to superping me, what with all the "Brian"s in the directory.
<nod> Much better those than some serial killer or something. :-/

8:32 PM
Hahah :)

Alright, I gotta hit the bed.

@orthocresol Y'know, because that's going to happen a lot.

BUT I'M WATCHING YOU CRESOL

@Rubisco The bed doesn't like being hit by you.

bed abuser!

8:34 PM

Right............

@ringo smaller than I expected...

Photo of @orthocresol getting ready for Halloween

good hat

8:35 PM
Hmm, my photo and info is all over the internet. Thanks, grad school.

i see you're a mac seal :)

Indeed

@pentavalentcarbon - i figured in my case to embrace it (name/photo) - keeps me honest. plus i don't think anyone really cares in my case :)

@ToddMinehardt Yeah, doesn't matter too much to me. It might help for networking later on too.

8:40 PM
@pentavalentcarbon Yeah, definitely. Probably next year, I am going to put some real info on my profile.
For now though, I'm just an irrelevant undergrad, so don't think anybody needs to know it.

I did basically the same thing.

yeah, i can attest to the power of networking, especially as i've gotten older

now I'm really feeling the pressure
maybe there will be another election next year if the site gets big enough...

probably, given the growth -
and the homework deluge :)

If I am elected as mod, I promise to rid the site of all homework questions.
Make Chem.SE great again
We'll build a wall and make the high schoolers pay for it.

8:51 PM
hey, i know those promises!

How many are we electing this year?

@ringo 2.

@orthocresol You aren't so far from a high schooler in my book...youngster.

at least you're not living where that moron is running for office @orthocresol

Ah

8:52 PM
@pentavalentcarbon :(

Seals are incapable of making sad faces plz stop

@ToddMinehardt oh god

@ToddMinehardt I'm afraid it will reach Europe soon enough. America is just one step ahead of this place.

keep your brexit where it belongs

@ringo @orthocresol - yeah it's a mess. i cannot believe Trump actually is on the ballot. his followers are especially scary

8:53 PM
@pentavalentcarbon I voted Remain. :(

@orthocresol Nothing is binding yet, right?

@pentavalentcarbon Not technically, but for the government to go against the referendum result would effectively be political suicide. There are people arguing for a second referendum but even I don't really agree with that, it's kind of like flipping a coin until you get heads.

Yuck, sounds like no one wins.

Doesn't look good, especially in universities and academia. But I guess we'll see soon enough.
If it's bad enough, I may defect to America ;)
Or Germany.

if it gets bad here, all of us will have defected to Canada - you might want to skip America and go there directly :)

8:59 PM
@ToddMinehardt Canadians hunt seals, I wouldn't have any peace of mind studying there.

@orthocresol - true that
plus, plenty of decent places in the u.s. for academia

Yeah, definitely.

plus, there are more weather choices that in northern europe :)

Texas? No thanks. Too hot. I want my winter (most of the time).

yeah, it is hot here - i grew up in NJ and went to Lehigh, but it was too cold for me :)
here, you're out in shorts and a t-shirt on christmas day
it's 90 F right now :)

9:04 PM
BLECH

F? What's that?

oh stop

sorry, i mean 32 C

I spent the summer in SF and that was ideal. 50 at night, 65-75 max during the day.

9:06 PM
I am not converting those units

@pentavalentcarbon It's around that temperature right now here, actually.

yeah, SF is nice - except you have to be a millionaire to live there

Bit colder
Right now, at 10pm, it is 53.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

what i like, at my latitude, is the longer daylight than up north

I am perfectly fine with a bit colder and would prefer it.
That sounds excellent.

9:07 PM
i do miss the turning of the seasons, for sure

Short days in the winter are indeed depressing.
Things seem slightly worse inland vs. the coast.

yeah, i get a mood boost from the daylight -

9:25 PM
sneakily upvotes competing answer to try and get Sportsmanship

@orthocresol I have a favor to ask you.
Or a question or help or something.
I can't edit the main meta post with a link to my Q&A response.
> Suggested edits are not allowed on non-tag-wiki posts on meta sites.

@pentavalentcarbon Ah, okay, I'll do it for you.

Thanks.
Do I not have enough rep on meta?

If I'm not wrong, you need 2k rep to edit on meta as well.

Aha. So then once I reach 2k, my edits will not be "suggested" on either meta or main?

9:30 PM
Yeah.
They will just take effect immediately.
And you also get to review suggested edits by people with <2k rep.
Hmm, seems like you also get access to VLQ review. You get to see the best of the site there

Thanks again for helping me with that. Now I'm tired again...

@pentavalentcarbon Answering that stuff is hard

I avoided reading the other answers until this morning. Rarely have I read answers to any questions as cold and calculated as Loong's.
I dunno if I could write like that even for things I'm an "expert" in.
Anyway, now that the field is crowded, I hope you run so I can read what you have to say.

@pentavalentcarbon As with the last few days, I'll just give the standard "I'm thinking about it" answer to that question...

$\buildrel{\wr\wr\wr}\over{
\buildrel{\buildrel{\odot\;\odot}\over{\triangleright}}\over{\smile}}$
2

9:37 PM
Gosh, i really need to get mathjax up on OS X.

@orthocresol I kept telling myself "no" and then worked myself into such a frenzy I couldn't take it anymore. Whatever you do is fine.
Bookmarklet!
@ToddMinehardt bows down

There's still some time, so I'm not feeling particularly pressured right now :)
@ToddMinehardt Did you construct that yourself?
Never imagined it was possible to do such things in LaTeX...

@orthocresol - yes
\buildrel{\wr\wr\wr}\over{
\buildrel{\buildrel{\odot\;\odot}\over{\triangleright}}\over{\smile}}

I think that's straight TeX.

yeah, plain TeX - i write in that and not LaTeX

9:41 PM
Amateur hour over here...I only know that $/$$ is TeX and ( and [ are LaTeX.
You can get so far with so little.

that's true

Here's the ChatJax bookmarklet I copied if you're too lazy to search for it (and you trust me): gist.githubusercontent.com/berquist/…

@pentavalentcarbon Thanks, it works :D
Now, I am too young to actually know the difference between TeX and LaTeX.
Just googled it..

i got into TeX in the early 1990s, i believe LaTeX was around but we used plain TeX. i used LaTeX for making some color presentations once, i think...
it was vi text.tex -> tex text.tex -> dvips text.dvi -> gv text.ps if i recall the workflow
text to postscript, then look at it with ghostview (gv)

That's all Greek to me.

9:48 PM
as it should be. things are smoother now

How to change mobile from computer chat when i'm on computer ?
It bugs

@ToddMinehardt vi ಠ_ಠ

10:11 PM
@pentavalentcarbon - yeah
always vi
did emacs for a year on a bet from a friend once

10:48 PM
@9-BBN - i don't know, sorry - i use this exclusively on desktop

11:00 PM
ಠ_ಠ

@pH13-YetanotherPhilipp - hey hey
look what the cat dragged in :) - how are you??

@ToddMinehardt hiho :))) has been some time
I'm fine ... how are you?

@pH13-YetanotherPhilipp - yeah, i was working for a start-up and that fizzled out recently, but i was really busy -
i'm fine, thanks for asking - presently "between job opportunities" as they say - how are things your way?
good to see your name on the ballot

I started my PhD 2 months ago, right after my master defense ... :)

hey, congrats!
any ideas on dissertation yet?

11:05 PM
I was very happy to get the chance to be moderator ... was taking about it for some time with Martin
@ToddMinehardt just some rough theme
norhing special. about the photophysics of dna intercalating ruthenium dyes

@pH13-YetanotherPhilipp - well, i think you'd be very good in that role. as for the dissertation, that's computational stuff, right?

computational chemistry, right
gaussian, orca, molcas, turbomole, ... @_@

the whole shebang

11:20 PM
whatever gets the job done ;)

right - you still doing your python stuff?

where it is needed. I startet some wrapper fir gaussian, bit could not finish it.

it happens...

my next python project is something bigger, but that will take some time ... if I ever start xD

i know that feeling :)

11:26 PM
I'm now back at home ... hope we see again soon. Bad, that our time zones have no big overlap :/

yeah, it's 18:30 here
you're after midnight, right?

at least you're aware to see the latest Donald Trump disaster that just leaked

I guess, I'll put that on the plan for tomorrow xD have a kice evening :)

you too - cheers
