Q: How did Scientists Capture The First Images of Molecules Before and After Reaction?

user8005 Using a state-of-the-art atomic force microscope, the scientists have taken the first atom-by-atom pictures, including images of the chemical bonds between atoms, clearly depicting how a molecule's structure changed during a reaction. Until now, scientists have only been able to infer this typ...

Could someone give me the right tags for this? Just one doesn't seem good.

hmmm possible question

1:16 PM
@Ghost Welcome to Periodic Table :)

Thank you kind sir
I am curious about the smell from when a electric train slows and stops - thought I'd ask here before I asked a question

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Question is interesting and imo we don't have appropriate tag :(
@Ghost Hmm, it's sort of everyday-chemistry but you should narrow it down somehow, have any clue what's responsible for smell?

i suspect ozone
is everyday chem not allowed?

1:37 PM
@Ghost It's one of biggest tags ;)

oh?

But it's sometimes misused for thing not having much to do with chemistry
@Ghost Your question seems OK :) It might be ozone, is the smell similar to chlorine bleach?

it's more of a overly sweet metallic smell

Ach, then it's probably friction and metallic parts in work

hmmm but what are chemicals behind the smell?

1:45 PM
there was somewhere a question about metallic smell, i'll search

Q: Why can we smell copper?

vszIf I can smell an object, it means that molecules of it are getting separated from it, so they can reach my nose. As far as I know, metals don't sublimate, especially not in room temperature. However, copper has a very strong and characteristic smell. Does it mean that copper will degrade pretty ...

There's nice answer

similar - I guess it will do

Probably, have a nice reading :)

this saves me from writing a question that would probably be dv-ed and closed

Q: Where does the name ‘aliphatic’ come from?

JanGenerally, carbons and the hydrogens bonded to them are classified as one of the following: aromatic olefinic aliphatic (something for triple bonds I don’t know) The meaning of aromatic is rather clear to anybody: They belong to aromatic systems (even though the Hückel rule has nothing to do ...

@Jan I think you mixed them up.

4:48 PM
@Loong question for you.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. ?

@Loong Aliphatic compounds aren't cyclic, no?
The Wikipedia page seems to include them, and do the "aromatic vs. aliphatic" thingy, while the blue book here seems to be doing "cyclic vs. aliphatic".
@Loong ^

Some definitions of "aliphatic compounds" do not include cyclic compounds. Such cyclic compounds would be "alicyclic compounds". However, IUPAC does include cyclic compounds and only excludes aromatic compounds.

Eh?

You can find various definitions and usages in the literature. Some include cyclic compounds, some don't.

4:57 PM
Well, Goldbook says alicyclic stuff is aliphatic.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Yes, according to IUPAC, alicyclic compounds are a subgroup of aliphatic compounds. However, you may also find alicyclic compounds and aliphatic compounds as separate groups in the literature.

I did.

Q: Can Stack Exchange's down-voting system be considered online bullying?

fabrice dFrom what I understand, bullying happens when someone is harmed through an online system that puts them in contact with other users, sometimes masking their identities. From Wikipedia: Cyberbullying is defined in legal glossaries as actions that use information and communication tech...

Hey all!

@TanMath \o
@user685252 Sigh

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. hello! so only one other person said thr later time is better, huh? today, the chat is very inactive!
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. BTW, if you cannot attend a TRE, please tell us earlier, like how you did last time... I will tell you if I am available to lead the TRE and participate or not...

@TanMath We can pull it out an hour later.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. ok.. great!

@TanMath I think I'll be able to be in this one.

8:02 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. ok... that is great to have you back!

I know it is. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
@M.A.R. - No, it just gives the reference to the work by Greabe. Perhaps one of our German-speaking chem.SE regulars can dig up that reference and shed some light. — Todd Minehardt 9 mins ago
@Jan ^ We need you to find an answer to your question. :)

I was just saying that if you need someone to step up as the leader, please tell me early like last time, and I will try my best to make it...

Hello \o/

\o

@Mithoron hello! how are you doing?

8:05 PM
@TanMath I don't think you should be so serious with this leadership

@Mart's avatar gives me the impression that he's sitting up there and watching us.

@Mithoron how come?
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. yeah! kinda creepy!

@TanMath There's simply some need to organize and help guys, and its parts are usually shared

Welcome @Nic :)
I think I found a semi-bug in chat, prolly similar to Fredley's bug. The bug happens when you star a long message like this which has where would be truncated in the star wall with an ellipsis. So I'd appreciate if you pin/star this long message which is supposed to reveal a semi-bug.

Q: Starring a message in chat that has a tag late in the message causes an empty tag box in the star list

animusonWell, that's a decent title. Now what the heck am I talking about? Caused by starring this chat message. Seems to me like the box shouldn't be there at all since the tag is not part of the shortened blurb. It functions like a normal tag, with the hover effect and everything, and actually...

Then everything okay

Ahh, so pin a message, move it somewhere else, and it remains pinned there?

Srsly first time you hear this?
Of curs!

I saw stuff when moving to trash. Never bothered to dig in the details.
7 messages moved to Sandbox
@Todd just downvote. Don't VTC.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. - will do, gracias

hello!@ToddMinehardt
