Q: Are Coke and Charcoal same thing obtained from different sources?

Samardeep singhAs Coke is obtained from Destructive distillation of coal, and Charcoal from Destructive distillation of substance other than Coal( like wood and Animal bones) are both the same thing with charcoal having higher impurity than Coke? Is Charcoal more reactive than Coke?

Q: How can you have a reduction potential for a non redox reaction?

CyclopropaneThe standard reduction potential for the half cell $$\ce{FeCO3_{(s)} + 2e- <=> Fe_{(s)} + CO3^2-} \quad\quad(E^o =-0.756 \text{V})$$ and the standard reduction potential for the half cell $$\ce{Fe^2+ + 2e- <=> Fe_{(s)}}\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad (E^o = -0.44 \text{V})$$ are as given. From t...

Q: What determines the kind of Bravais lattice structure (body-centred cubic, hexagonal, etc) a transition metal shows?

SunainaWith the exception of Zn, Hg, Cd and Mn transition metals most transition metals have only one kind of lattice structure at room temperature. Another trend I noticed was that Groups 3 and 4 have hexagonal close packing; 5 and 6 have Body-centred cubic cells; Groups 7 and 8 (with the exception of ...

Q: Why is is so difficult to crystallise anything in a glass capillary?

BeginTheBeguineI'm talking about very fine glass capillaries with a diameter under 1 mm. I've found that if I carry out melting point analysis, the material in the capillary doesn't freeze again. I did wonder whether it was forming a glass, but I experimented with using a larger volume of material and cutting/t...

Q: Equilibrium chemical potential if the population is not conserved?

TomiThe chemical potential, $\mu$, is equal to the free energy $F$, per photon. $$F = \mu = u-Ts$$ The energy per photon is $u=h\nu$ and $s$ is the entropy per photon. Say we have a process where an incoming photon ($\nu_{1}$) is absorbed by a dye and then emitted at ($\nu_{2}$). Then at equilibrium,...
