@orthocresol ohh good idea.
Maybe we can have an SE cryptocurrency haha

@pentavalentcarbon biblatex certainly is the bomb. After working for weeks with bibtex/bibtex, i solved all my problems with it within a day... and then some. There are features I did not know I would ever need and then I did. Big fan, bigly ;)

Why are (iii) and (iv) named as such? Can someone please explain

Could you guys take a look at my answer?
https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/88615/acidity-of-cyclopentadiene-when-fused-to-benzene-rings
I'm not sure if it's 100% correct

8:08 AM
I thought (iv) is named wrong, but it's used a lot? Why does the numbering start from the Br side?

Does anyone here have experience with MALDI-TOF mass spec?
Quick question: I measured mass spec for my compound in NaI+ Dianthrol and found peak corresponding to [Mol-Na]+ which is what i expected but also something that seems to be [Mol-K]+ (?) Would anyone happen to know why? Asking here, cause i think the answer is probably simple, and not really worth putting on the main site

Zhe
@Rick I think this is because the substituents (not the unsaturation) take precedence, and 1,2,2 is lower than 4,3,2

A: What is the correct IUPAC name of this compund?

orthocresolAccording to P-14.4 in Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry: IUPAC Recommendations and Preferred Names 2013 (Blue Book): P-14.4 Numbering When several structural features appear in cyclic and acyclic compounds, low locants are assigned to them in the following decreasing order of seniority:...

@getafix did you use K+ to make the compound?
did K+ come anywhere within a 15000 mile radius of your compound?
Did you eat a banana in the lab?

Zhe
@getafix That might have to do with how the ionization works
But I admit that orthocresol's questions are better

I actually don't know anything much about MALDI. But with ESI I see [M+K]+ peaks whenever I run a reaction with K2CO3.

Zhe
A lot of it depends on the ionization process.

2:23 PM
Mm, I guess so...

If you have questions, usually, you should consult this book: wiley.com/en-us/…
That book is kind of a must have for organic chemists

I have a pdf.

Zhe
Good enough :)

@orthocresol I didn't use any potassium at all. Don't know about the 15000 mile thing. I'm trying to track down the person in the group who used the tray before I did, maybe he used it? Or maybe there was KI contamination in the NaI?
Oh @Zhe thanks, did not know about this book. I'll look through it...maybe it has some answers

Zhe
The first editions had a blue cover, then red, and now I don't know what color the covers are
I would literally mail you my copy, but I donated almost all of my chem books already

Haha it's alright. I mostly rely on lib.gen for textbooks these days
I'm too poor to buy them, and I am banned from my university library

3:02 PM
It is not that I am an asshole, I am genuinely forgetful..and I just forget to return books...and now they wont let me borrow any... :(

@getafix Forgetful is something you can fix
And I trust you will get a fix for it

4:27 PM
groans
@getafix Well, I got lots of things from libgen too. I don't really feel bad about it, because if libgen didn't exist I would simply walk down to the library, so I'm not cheating anybody out of money.

@zhe yeah I sort of have this system were I write things down on the inside of my wrist haha it is a good place for making notes
@orthocresol yeah true. All thiugh to be honest, I think most publishers have enough money already. So it doesn't really matter haha

Zhe
@getafix No, it's really not. Get a digital calendar... :(
Shameless plug: Google calendar is decent
And you can set deadlines
Or Google Keep

Haha well. I see it everytime I look at my hands, instant reminders throughout the day. I do use google keep as well though.
I know you work at Google but do you happen to work on those two specifically ? Just curious

Zhe
4:49 PM
I do not.
I work on Google Flight Search

Q: How isotopes atomic mass was defined?

Goncalo FonsecaSo we say that 1 Amu (u) = 1/12 of the mass of a Carbon 12 atom. Im not sure about this, but I believe that first we measured the mass of 1 carbon 12 atom (This includes the mass defects that occur during the formation of nucleus) and then defined that 1 atomic mass unit has a value of 1/12 of ...

Jan 1 at 11:29, by Loong
This amu is really hard to kill.
