5:02 AM
I just realised that the half-life equation (t1/2 = 1/k[A]0) for 2nd order kinetics doesn't work for all durations (t).

5:16 AM
I realised this as I was doing a problem which required me to calculate the concentration of a particular reactant involved in a 2nd order reaction after a particular duration, which was much longer than the half-life

Why do people love subscripts so much?

@Martin-マーチン What is the meaning of life?
@orthocresol yeah, and he noticed it like after all the people in SE

@M.A.R. dying

@Martin-マーチン With the same logic, the purpose of subscripts is for you to edit them

hmm... i would have expected more

@Martin-マーチン More from?

i don't know... I just find it very irritating why there have to be cascades of sub/superscripts...

9:37 AM
@Martin-マーチン You just have to accept life is generally irritating

A: Formatting Sandbox I: please test stuff here

subsup is like flies that always appear when you're enjoying food somewhere green

@M.A.R. no it isn't

@Martin-マーチン OK. Life is generally irritating when you're not drunk

no it isn't

9:57 AM
@Martin-マーチン so what is it then?

dunno, but i wouldn't say it's irritating

well it's not dunno
Dunno, maybe
It does sometimes get more dunno than usual

sometimes I really wonder if you're doing drugs...
what you say makes no sense... but I guess that is the intention...
you're trying to confuse me.

@Martin-マーチン . . . I am
But drugs drugs, not crystal drugs
Such as Sevelamer hydrochloride

well, all the chemistry, none the fun

10:12 AM
Kinda fun watching blood P level decreasing though

okay... if you say so...

Why are some people constantly writing $\mathrm{SN_2}$ instead of $\mathrm{S_N2}$ is it taught differently in other parts of the world?

A: Can isonitriles be used to make primary amines?

Gaurang TandonMy textbook has an easy way. Since the NC bond is highly polar, you can simply hydrolyze the given $\ce{R-NC}$ molecule. The electropositive $\ce{H^+}$ will attach to the more electronegative $\ce{N}$ atom, while the $\ce{OH^-}$ will attach to carbon atom. This will use two molecules of $\ce{H2O}...

:(
@Martin-マーチン It should definitely be what you wrote. Exact that I don't think the S needs to be in Roman
I usually do $S_{\mathrm{N}}2$
Though I guess if you're consistent with how you write E1 E2, then maybe it matters less

Maybe.... I have seen that so often by now, there has to be a source...
probably one of these dubious Indian textbooks
I don't really care about those abbreviation anyway, because most of the reaction mechanisms don't follow either path...

Zhe
You mean one that teaches you that you can hydrolyze an isonitrile to formaldehyde and amine?

@Zhe you forgot a few oooo :P
Maybe you should have said $$\Huge\color{red}\textbf{NOOOOOO!}$$

Zhe
That was definitely worth -1 rep

There are many posts deserving a down-vote, and one rep is not that much...
this one is surprisingly related though...

There's so much wrong with that question....
Not the least of which is that the reagent in question is formyl chloride...

@Zhe which question now?

Zhe
2:48 PM
@Martin-マーチン This one

@Zhe even though i edited that mess, i couldn't right now connect the dots...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Zhe usually at that stage I just check out
to be fair I haven't gotten to that stage very frequently in the last few months..
