@LeeWoofenden But all potential definitions of marriage will have sectarian bias. None of our western societies have a universally accepted definition of marriage. So I'd prefer we hang a lampshade on it and not try to make the tag be representative of any real cultural agenda, but simply a site-specific definition for categorisation purposes. Which is what I think the tag is doing now.
@LeeWoofenden That said, I would be okay with this tag wiki.
Both of you: Have you taken these specific tag wiki suggestions to Meta?

I think the current tags are fine. There is no neutral definition - either you "endorse" the "traditional definition" to the offense of some or you elevate same-sex unions to the level of marriage to the offense of others. BUT, by all means take the current suggestion to meta and put it to a vote; what has been suggested is probably your best shot at change.
Make sure to have the initial post be something neutral like "what should the definition of our marriage tag be" and then offer the suggestion as an answer. That way, there is no confusion as to what upvotes mean.

@ThaddeusB Or you use the word the way it is actually used in the culture, with all of its variety of usage, which pretty well covers the bases. That is what this proposal would do. Once again, this is not a Christian site, nor is it even a religious site. It is a secular site, and it does not represent the viewpoint of any group, denomination, or wing of Christianity.

@LeeWoofenden The site can chose to define its tags however it likes - it doesn't have to follow "the culture" (of the United States, I suppose). I'm not going to argue the point, though. Put it on meta when you are ready and we'll see how it goes.

@LeeWoofenden So which way is that? The way of the Roman Catholic church? The way of evangelical protestants? The way of the US government? The way of the Australian government? The way of ISIS?
There is no meaningful superset of "a legal union between a man and a woman and definitinitely not a man and a man or a woman and a woman" and "a legal union between two people"
