Huh. Well. The best I got at the moment is that "we tried" on the rep system. Do y'all mind throwing a quick bug report together? Just so we can track/respond better later.

So when everything is finished, is there going to be a separate stackoverflow documentation meta (to where all these questions will presumably be moved?)

@DanielM. No. Current plan is to abandon (most) of the Q&A here, move the actual docs to Stack Overflow, and then Meta Stack Overflow will be come the usual place to discuss bugs, features, etc. If/when we expand to other sites (other technical sites could potentially benefit from docs), Meta Stack Exchange would also be an option for discussions.
We might migrate things to MSO from here that are either unresolved bug reports or discussions that would benefit from a wider audience. But there's not much point in migrating early bug reports for issues that were fixed or feature requests that were implemented.

Hi!

3:34 PM
Hey everyone

Should regex be a part of the java documentation beyond how to implement it in java?

Seems like it should be its own thing, with java-related topics only documenting how java does it.

user118171
Typo: 'though' should be 'through'.

3:50 PM
@FrancescoMenzani whoops, will fix, thanks

user118171
How long will the private beta last?

Current plan is to "end of March/early April"

When submitting a draft for a Topic that has already a draft waiting for approval, what happens to that draft? Do changes get merged?

@AdamLear maths, how do I even

@FrancescoMenzani Hmm. Not sure off the top of my head, actually. I think one of them will "win"... but hey, Monty is here now and he probably knows.

nothing happens when you submit a draft, but when one is approved all the others pending review get merged with the approved draft - if they can't be merged, the unapproved one gets auto-rejected.
It tries to "just work."

user118171
Define 'can't be merged'.

if they don't touch any of the same sections (same example, remarks, syntax, etc.) it's basically a no-op - if they touch the same section, we have a little custom 3-way merge that runs.
"can't be merged" is (more or less), both change the same line or one deletes a section/example that was changed in the other
if a change is rejected because it conflicted with another approved draft, the little yellow "what happened"-box says so - and links to whatever caused it
it wouldn't surprise me if there are edgecases and bugs in all that, it's kind of complicated and, you know,

4:34 PM
How do I add the Remarks section to a topic?

when editing there's a button for it, click the pencil then click the button

user118171
What about other sections, like Syntax and Parameters?

same thing, just higher on the page

user118171
I don't see them.

^ that's the state if you start making a new Topic, so it's completely empty
which page are you on?

user118171
4:46 PM
I'm viewing the Java's Hello World Topic. I see two Examples, plus the Add Example link. I can only see the Add Remarks button there:

huh
that does seem to be the case
thanks for the report, I'll dig into that bug in a minute here

user118171

jah, I can reproduce

user118171
Maybe it's related to this approved proposal. The comment states "edited 1 examples, 1 deletion", but I don't see the Remarks section highlighted in red.

if I had to guess it's probably something like that, a deletion put in a "" instead of a NULL or vice versa; so the "is this section missing?" check is broken for subsequent edits

4:57 PM
I'm trying to approve the second half of docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/… yet I keep getting the error, "An error has occurred during submission; please try again." I've approved the first half of the submission, not sure why the other half won't work.
I'm not sure how to resolve this

I see an exception in the logs, probably related - we'll look at it soon; thanks for the report

great, thanks!

user118171
Also: 1) The split editing feature feels laggy on my Firefox on Windows 7. 2) The view mode when reviewing proposed changes isn't saved and restored the next time. 3) The reputation score on the topbar is not updated yet, after some hours.

Editing also seems laggy for me sometimes, esp. when editing tables. (Opera).

5:28 PM
@AdamLear I agree with this. While regex has many variations and the syntax works differently across languages, the idea is the same and can be generalized. It works as its own technology.

5:43 PM
docs-beta.stackexchange.com/… the syntax block isn't there
WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!
can someone try visiting the page? it may be just me, I want to make sure.

nah it's not just you
it looks like a bug
@KevinMontrose can you confirm?

ok

as long as that wasn't what you added, because your change hasn't been approved yet.

well, I added that yesterday and it was approved

looks like it hasn't been approved to me.
let me approve it.

5:45 PM
but I visit the page today and the block is missing
I go to preview and it appears, so I tried submitting - even though it says there is no changes it passed to a proposal and now it's there, with no diff
... docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/java/91/… look, the syntax block still isn't there :P

yeah looks like a bug
kevin will pop in and let you know he's looking into it.

I may have just discovered an exploit that grants me an ability to farm rep points. :P Go fix it before someone else does it!

:)

6:03 PM
@snowe2010 yeah, it's a bug
I think I'm about to very angry with myself, testing a theory...
oh yeah, that is all my fault

it's beta so you still have your spawn protection. :P

6:21 PM
haha, well at least people are catching the bugs right?

yah
breaking everything now better than breaking everything later

2 hours later…
8:20 PM
@Unihedron should be fixed now
@Unihedron likewise, there's a site wide recalc sweeping through that fix all of that
tl;dr - code wrote that you got rep, but didn't actually += the rep score in one case
there was also a bug in recalcs fixed, but I don't think anyone actually encountered it live

8:34 PM
I'm starting a pretty long trip in a couple hours - so heads up, the rest of the team (which will be around while I'm gone) is @AdamLear @JarrodDixon and @KurtisBeavers.
2
Try not to start any fires in the next couple weeks.

I promise we will. :)

8:52 PM
@KevinMontrose have a great trip. We'll keep pushing forward while you're out.

9:09 PM
Is HTTPS supported ? If I visit docs on HTTPS, it works, but a lot of the links send me back to plain HTTP. I hope you're keeping HTTPS in mind :-)

@JonasCz we're not doing anything for it one way or another at the moment. agree that we need to be more consistent, but features are taking priority at the moment
all of SO is going to support HTTPS (in 6-8 weeks... we keep getting delayed by other stuff), and we'll def have to get our links ready by then too

10:08 PM
That's so awesome ! Looking forward to official HTTPS support. Only for SO for now or all of SE ?
