@Oddthinking It may be not overly important, but looking at the two books by Kline, it becomes apparent, that he knows the proper translation for mathematicus, but uses it in the intentionally wrong and without source attribution in "…for nonmathematicians" to 'make his point'. The books I compared came in multiple editions, and this was never 'corrected'. It couldn't be, as it would no longer fit into his line of argument. It is misleading and it is so by choice, aka 'manipulation'.
He never explained this to be precisely not "on good authority" (preface) or a historical/Latin kind of 'joke'/exercise for the reader to dig into. Despite recalling Augustine later in that text.
