@fabian We should start building a list of redundant tags
Watching you removing them all is painful to watch

Hi @Borror

Hi

I've seen that you will never get rid of those tags once you have a few thousand questions on the site
better start early

Agreed
I'm saying that maybe we should create a list, and eventually ask Jeff to ban the most common ones.
Even if we remove them as we go

That is a good idea, I have a partial list of tags in my meta-question, but we should have a general list of bad tags
community-wikied so that everyone can add tags, maybe even a counter how often those bad tags were resurrected. The limit to get a tag on the blacklist is pretty high if I remember correctly, so we should have some good reasons if we want to add a tag there

"The limit to get a tag on the blacklist is pretty high if I remember correctly, so we should have some good reasons if we want to add a tag there"
Exactly, hence why I suggest we keep count

is my current favorite for the first entry there

I think I've seen you remove three times already, too
Slight tangent: what do you think of ? I think it's redundant with other tags like , , , , , etc.

I was wondering about that too, but medicine and health are not really the same thing
I think we should keep those seperate for now

2:27 PM
You're right. Health is divided in subschoosl, which include medicine
but those sub-schools have a name, like nutrition (well, dietetics)

I've created the meta question

A: List of bad tags

Fabian evidence 1x pseudoscience 1x science 1x quackery 1x

I don't see the difference between diet and nutrition. Strictly speaking there is probably one, but I think we could maybe merge those tags

I have been recently told that dietetics is the academic discipline, and nutritionist is the vaguer term that anyone can use to describe themself

I'd probably make diet and food synonyms of nutrition. It's not exactly the same but close enough

Agreed
@fabian You said "A good starting poins" rather than point
on here

Q: Promoting Skeptics.SE

FabianAfter the public beta begins, we should promote this site to increase our number of experts and get some more traffic. A good starting poins would be to promote the site to skeptical bloggers an on message boards targeted to skeptics. Skeptic bloggers have already an audience that they could dir...

Thanks, I still miss the ability to edit anything, but that won't take long now hopefully

2:42 PM
It'll take you at least after private beta
oops, I thought it was 1k. nvm
"an on message boards targeted to skeptics."
*and ;)

Maybe I should start proofreading ;-)

Perhaps ;)
It baffles me how many people make easy punctuation errors
I might hit the daily cap just by fixing their errors one day

English punctuation is somewhat confusing, especially for a non-native speaker.

The same rules as in French apply, so I'm good :P

But we haven't had any really poorly written question yet, that will come after the private beta ends

2:53 PM
oh no, what bothers me most is how little sourcing most people bother with
you'd think that, as skeptics, they would understand how important it is to back up your claims.

Unsourced answers are easier and faster, that might be our specific version of the "fastest gun in the west" problem

I think that it will
That's why I don't answer much, personally
I can say a bunch of quck stuff, but actually writing a good answer is long and tough
That's why I proposed we downvote all claims that are not backed up
Few of us have professional training in the topic at hand, whatever it is, so the ability to verify the information is crucial

I'll reserve downvoting for unsourced claims that I find dubious, I won't use it for unsourced claims that I would guess are right. I'm hoping that people will improve their answers over time. I won't upvote such answers, though

I'm thinking of leaving a message like "Great answer, but I don't upvote answers who don't back up their claims by citing their sources." or something. People might think I'm an asshole though, if I do that alone.

A: Zodiac signs and constellations

Lennart RegebroSince astrology rose out of astronomy (and in fact through most of history was the same thing) the relation is that the constellations of the sky and the constellations of astrology are one and the same. So the question is backwards, it's not "What is the relationship", the question is "Why are t...

That answer is a good example
How can I, who know next to nothing about astrology, tell if he's not just saying nonsense?

If we have a critical mass of experts in the relevant field, that problem might get smaller as they will challenge bad information
But we really should try to encourage citing sources

Should we put a feed of the new questions into this chat?

@Fabian I was looking to add new meta questions
but I didn't know if it was possible to do that, if you're not the owner of the room

Hi Skeptics, I'm going to add a touch of italic here
I'm skeptical Fabian won't be a good owner

That's the weirdest double negative I have ever read

</bad-pun-of-the-day>

So, I added the meta feed

8:00 PM
If you need anything else feel free to flag for mod attention, @Fabian. e.g., do you want a special name/icon for that feed, or is good ole Feeds good enough?

@badp I don't think we need to call it Bob ;-)
But thanks

meh, I like adding flavour here and there. Oh well, later!

Q: Markdown help doesn't explain [tag:]

OddthinkingYou can mark StackExchange tags like so example, using [tag:]. This is not explained anywhere I can find in the Markdown help. This probably applies across StackExchange sites.

Q: List of bad tags

FabianThis question contains a list of tags that are not useful and should be removed from any question should they appear again. This applies mostly to so-called meta tags, see also The Death of Meta Tags for more information. If you see a new tag like this please remove it from the relevant question...

Q: Tag synonym and renaming proposals

If you have an idea on a synonym or want to rename a tag to something better, please put your proposal in ...

Q: How to ask a question requesting criticism of a specific resource?

mfgI would like to ask for general criticism or scrutiny of a book (most searches result in sales), but am unsure how to keep it from being too general. The book makes a handful of claims, and to keep from being too open-ended, should i ask in the form (A) which claims are the most debunked / critic...

well, that was a bit spammy but thanks feedy
