Q: How do you explain to your boss they're wrong without making them feel threatened?

NiphraI work in software industry as a developer. My boss sometimes makes small mistakes when assigning tasks or reporting bugs. For example, he recently reported a bug caused by a virus on his computer to the bug tracking system. Usually, I explain why his request is impossible and provide some data ...

A: How to resign when I know my employer will lose a big client when I leave?

AndyIts not your problem. Just give your two weeks notice and move on. I recommend not really going into the details of why you're leaving, that just might burn a bridge on your way out.

WHERE DID THE FAQ GO!.... I want my faq back

1:47 PM
@Chad apparently it's a "by design" thing

Q: I lost my FAQ (link)

enderlandIt seems the link to the FAQ is gone from the top menu bar on multiple sites, at least Stack Overflow, The Workplace. All of our users on The Workplace are now posting answers/questions which are low quality because they haven't read it since there is no link (obviously if the link is there they...

hmm, im now stuck with the fun task of needing to unchain my laptop from the desk, without the key...
anyone able to work acts of magic? xD

should I try to do some iOS development work?

2:19 PM
do you have the chance to? or just want to pick it up yourself?

for work - and yes I want to learn this anwyays

go for it, nothing wrong with increasing your skill set!

@RhysW Alot of those chain locks are easily pickable. Try taking a busness card, rolling it into a circle the size of the lock and seeingif it will open it

@RhysW I met someone yesterday who has created a mockup of an iOS app but probably can't code it
I don't know that I CAN code it, but I would definitely have the skillset to try :)

@Chad yeah, they are easily breakable to, i demonstrated by cutting half way through it in 5 mins with only a staple remover , but id rather not have the cable hanging out of it on the lock thats still there
@enderland if you only ever do jobs you can already do you dont learn new things

2:24 PM
@RhysW heh yeah I'm trying to write the followup "nice to meet you yesterday" email and somehow phrase it in such a way to indicate seirous interest in that project

Putting a resource in a challenging situation beyond his abilities? whose mistake? Mine or managements?
Am I wrong or is that not the angle of attack you want to make when defending your project failure to your manager

@Chad i will be honest, im not sure i even understand what was being said...
@enderland yeah, dont want to come off too enthusiastic, me and my colleague are routinley told off for appearing too happy and cheerful at our job...

His manager assigned him to a project that was "Beyond his abilities"

hey that soudns like my current project

Im always assigned to projects beyond my knowledge xD part of being an apprentice though i guess, i have no knowledge

Hi (name),

Good to meet you yesterday at (conferencename) and thank you for talking about your projects.

The iOS project work you are doing is exciting, given my background and interests. Let me know if there are ways I can be involved – the program I am in allows me a fair bit of flexibility.

Have a wonderful day!
thoughts??

wonderful seems a bit too, cheery, but then that might just be me

@RhysW A positive attitude will get you more jobs that competence at the required skills

@Chad oh yeah, positive yes, but, that seems sort of like 'butt kissing' for want of better phrase, buttering up i suppose, theres ways to be positive without sounding like that, though perhaps thats just my culture! lots of differences like that

I sent it
whatevs :P

Haha, not saying its a bad thing, just not a word used in my workplace

2:39 PM
@Chad it's also surprising to me how few people actually express INTEREST in getting new positions inside a company.... or take efforts to pursue what they want to do

@enderland i think i might be one of the majority who dont, purely because i have no idea what i want to do, so take no effort pursuing it, tbh im just happy developing, regardless of what it is

3:12 PM
@RhysW me too, I enjoy coding a looot more than i realized, now that I'm not necessarily doing it on a regular basis :)

So with the FAQ gone can we create an How to answer Help page?

4:00 PM
Next time i even think about talking with BVR someone please shoot me in the head

@enderland haha, i like an even split between development and a little bit of support. Its nice to be able to laugh at other peoples code sometimes :P
@Chad Yes please!
Rachel would probably be want to be involved, given she made a lot of suggestions to the FAQ

So long as it focuses on Back it up, Complete answers, and Expert Quality then I am ok with that

@Chad you forgot an important one

@RhysW ?

comments arent for posting answers and lengthy discussions!

4:08 PM
Well that need to be another page "What are Comments"
I liked it
Comments are a rabbit hole from which you will not escape so just dont post them :p
I Still think comments should only be viewable by the OP and the poster and the OP should be able to delete any comments from their questions... that would solve my comment problems :p

thats a nice idea

in the 5 hours, the question happily collected enough of crappy answers brought by braindead collider and got CWed
