I'm coloured, heavily tattooed, ugly and usually a minority within a minority. I've been discriminated against in every white collar job I've ever had.... it doesn't worry me, I'm not there for the beauty pageant, just the money. Once the money stops heading upwards fast enough I'm off. Until then who cares?

@motosubatsu ahaha yeah they can be intense.

@Kilisi Yep, I'm a hearing-impaired, autiistic, dysgraphic, mentally unstable nerd. I am always the office weirdo. But I do my job. That's all that matters

Q: Should I take the blame for an error by someone on the team I lead?

manuelBetancurtI am a software team lead. One of my guys built an update for android, but left the environment on "staging" and now everybody is freaking out: the marketing guys, PM, product owner. So far I have taken the "blame", and it is my fault really for not checking before uploading... The app had to be ...

Pfff, so many views but such meagre answers. :|
I was hoping for a nice comprehensive detailed answer on the concepts of blame versus responsibility and individual versus team responsibility and how to navigate all this. But I'm not seeing much of that in the answers. A few cover parts of this but none are really great.
And of course with HNQ if those answers do come in they won't ever rise to the top so who'd bother. Ugh.

@Lilienthal I'm going to tackle that one

@Lilienthal my take is that the question is mostly irrelevant fluff rationalising the OP's mistake into something else.
I typed my answer at the same time as the accepted one, then after reading it deleted mine.

@Kilisi I put one in about responsibility. I had a boss once who NEVER let us take the blame for anything. If there was a problem, he'd talk to us privately, and settle things, but in public, we could never do anything wrong.

A manager like that could get you to march into hell and swear you had frostbite

yeah, thats how it's done if you need a strong team. It's becoming less and less viable nowadays though in professions, and never worked in some other industries.
sometimes you have to view the team as transient and untrustworthy, so you need a different strategy, mostly micromanagement and oversight.

6:57 PM
@Kilisi You are right of course, and it is unfortunate.

AIQ
10:16 PM
Woooowww ... I shot myself in the head today ... In an interview, I was asked something like "Why do you want work for our company in particular?" I said something like "I don't know if there is anything in particular about the company that brings me here, I think that it is the duties in the job that I am really interested in because they will help me develop a set of skills that I really need for ..."
This is why I can't find a job, wrong answers!
