I do love snow - but I have to say I'm not a fan on work days, the idiots who can't drive in it make getting anywhere a nightmare

Bit of a slow start this morning.... I blame the cold

I'm northern line practically door to door so it doesn't really effect my journey and I'd rather snow than rain

@moto I grew up here but then spent a about 10 years away from it, desperately wanting to go back, but now I've been back for a few years and I see why my parents moved away and I'm glad I changed my mind about going to uni here. It has it's good and bad points, but honestly I guess I liked it so much when I was younger because I didn't work or pay bills etc

Basically - you're not missing much and the North West is definitely better

@Bee My advice to everyone I know is that unless you have a really good reason to stay in London, you should move somewhere house prices are actually affordable. Mine would be Nottingham personally. Went to Uni there and it’s just an absolutely lovely city.

I learnt to drive in Nottingham and that one way system has scarred me for life

I definitely won't buy in London

buying in a big city is a losing proposition anyways

we're a hair's breadth away from political pressure forcing rent caps and huge taxes on landlords there, so the investment is anything but secure

I think that's a good think though, rent is extortionate. Until my raise I was paying nearly half my monthly take home on it

@Bee housing costs (be it rent or purchase prices) are simply mind boggling in London

With remote work becoming more common, I'm fairly sure people are going to stop moving here

If yourself have the opportunity to remote then I'd consider moving away from London. Bordeaux is becoming expensive and I already consider moving away. It's nowhere near London prices though, I have no idea how you tolerate that

High housing costs have captured the gains of the economic progress of the last couple of decades in majority in the hands of landlords and investors

think about it: If I worked in frankfurt, my take home pay would be about 60% higher for a similar role. But I would also pay more then I get extra in additional rent

so all the extra money I worked for would be captured by a landlord there

@MisterPositive my current employer is bristling with security to the point where it's almost comical. Once, on a Friday, we put a balloon on someone's desk for their birthday, and the police showed up in the middle of the night that Sunday because alarms went off when it popped.

Oh, we all thought it was hilarious. I'm sure the police didn't.

Then again, it was probably less stressful than showing up and finding an armed crook in the building

I think the police probably see the funny side too - provided it's not someone being stupid wasting their time

@Bee reminds me of a "fun" time at a previous workplace where people kept forgetting to close windows before leaving - a moderate gust of wind would then set the alarm off causing the police to attend. After I think it was the 6th incident in less than a year the police rather irritably said that if it happened again they would start charging

I mean, that's just plain stupid.... you learn from the first time!

@Bee it gets even worse in that they never did.. their "solution" was to make myself and a colleague who lived nearby contacts on the alarm monitoring so we'd get called first and, as we only lived a couple of miles away would be able to get in and verify the false alarm before the call to the police was triggered

that was... not a great company

@Magisch "fairly" and "compensated" weren't really words that were paired at that company, it was more "shut up" and "do what you're told"

in my area the chance its an actual breakin is miniscule and when it is they usually dont carry weapons and run when they see someone

@ArthurHavlicek nope.. just turn up with the keys, nominally the idea was that if you arrived and saw something happening you'd just stay the hell out of the way until the police arrived

@Magisch normally that would have been the case in this area as well - except the reason why we'd ended up with the stupid alarm system in the first place was because the office had been broken in to.

@motosubatsu I'm willing to do a lot of odd hours and come in at odd times, provided there's compensation

I don't have family obligations like most people, but that's rare and costs :D

@Magisch All of them were basically ignored but hey, CYA protocol is in effect. :)

I don't bother flagging up serial voting atm because it would just feed the backlog

@Magisch in general I'm in agreement - I'll do odd or unpleasant hours here and there but as I've gown to value my out-of-work time more highly there would be a commensurate rise in what it would cost

I'll do weekend for 2.5 time, holiday too, ordinary overtime for x2, 4h minimum

has the added pleasant side effect of keeping utilization of my overtime low

Thankfully I'm in a position where labor rights and my contract is such that I don't have to do overtime if I decline to do so, except in specific circumstances

I was just making the point that imo, the answer is a clear and concise one. Unlike a lot of questions, I think it has a very clear answer, no grey area

Can't sleep. Thinking a bit too fast. This whole story affecting me too much and now I really understand why.

I had a father that used arguments to control me and my brother when I was a teen. He used to need to prove points and get us to agree with him. He used every possible abusive mean: aggressiveness, lies, etc. he is paranoiac and antisemitic and tried to convince us of conspiracy theories.

We were young and he was a reference to us. When I grew up and realized that I started to open up my disagreement. This affected our relationship greatly. He was OK father outside that.

Until recently I avoided all kind of political debates and stuff because I feared the aggressiveness. But I really just made the connection.

So to everybody I'm really sorry if I made erratic statements about violence etc. but I had to sort a few issues with myself.
