I'm currently the only person who drinks Ice tea cans at our 4+1 company (4 devs and the owner), one per day. I drink other beverages, but I drink a can during my lunch because it's the only sugary beverage I drink on a day, because if I drink a can in the evening it sometimes messes with my sleep schedule. I'm wondering whether that's ... Okay, for a lack of a more descriptive term. Like, relative i'm 20% of the company, but I'm not sure it's a good thing long-term
Would the above be a reasonable question on the main site that wouldn't just be answered with "ask the owner"?

@Nzall I think you're overthinking this - I assume these are company-provided drinks?

@motosubatsu yeah, they are

then relax.. that's what they are there for - and your consumption (at one can a day) is hardly excessive
if you were shoveling the entire contents of the fridge into your bag at the end of the day I'd say you might be out of line :D

@motosubatsu nah, that's not the case. I think the most I do is that on hot days, I take the rest of the water bottle I opened with me so I stay hydrated on the train
But I'm definitely not using the office fridge as a backup pantry

@Nzall hehe.. yep that's totally normal

11:45 AM
Like, I don't even carry a bag with me to work. I try to travel light so I can put everything in my coat pockets

I just read the CIS degree question..... Poor bastard.
@Nzall I agree, you are overthinking things.

@motosubatsu I've seen people do that and it was still fine
while I was at the government agency people used the heavily discounted food and drink to hell and back. Some people would get breakfast, lunch and dinner there and take home some stuff

@Magisch yeah there are scenarios where even that is acceptable, it's over my line personally but doesn't mean you can never get away with it

pretty sure they budgeted for it too
the food was way too good not to eat
like fancy restaurant type dinner and lunch and a full entree with salad and a slice of cake after cost like 3.50€
not great if you're trying to lose weight everything there was way too delicious

12:00 PM
@Magisch usually when food is that heavily subsidized its for one of two reasons - either because they want you to spend longer days there or because they know they can't get the budget to pay people more but can for the good so use it as incentive to stay despite lower-than-market wage

probably the latter
the government pays absolutely lousy for software devs

@Magisch that'd be my guess in a public sector employer

it's like a fixed scale tariff thing with no merit raises but automatic bracket progression

@Magisch pretty much par for the course

12:14 PM
when you got there at 8.00 and took a long breakfast so you actually started at 9.30, you could take a long lunch from 12.00 to 1.30 and then finish off with dinner at 6pm

12:36 PM
@motosubatsu we call those minor perks "satisfiers". Making the work environment more relaxed. Personally, I need a low stress environment rather than better pay

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica agreed.. once I'm earning "enough" I care more about the environment then about "extra" pay

@motosubatsu yep. Right now, I could be making 50% more than I am, but I make enough and it is zero stress, and I get along with everyone.
I burned out once, tjat
that is enough

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica amen to that.. ironically I'm now actually earning more than I was when I burned out and have significantly less stress

@motosubatsu Yeah, no job is worth your health.

1:11 PM
in case you haven't seen this: stackoverflow.blog/2020/01/21/…

@MisterPositive It's not bad per se - but ultimately it's mostly just meaningless platitudes at this point. It's generally axiomatic that actions mean more than words, and ultimately that's what people are going to judge the organisation on

I wanna see an Atwood and Spolski comeback ala Steve Jobs and Gil Amelio. :) Never happen, but I can wish.
except J&J left voluntarily of course

1:54 PM
@MisterPositive it's just standard boilerplate gobbledygook. So many words to say so little.

Q: How to shut off an elder co-worker?

Shravan KarmarkarI work at a market research organisation mixed with many workers with various professions. I have a teammate who is elder than me and has worked for 7 years more than me. Although, she has the same amount of experience in market research as I have. Even yet, she tries to boss me around as if I am...

I'm steering clear of this one..... Sounds VERY ranty ^^^^^^
@ChrisE there's a project going on that's being build by SE expats. Looks like it might take off.

2:12 PM
@RichardSaysReinstateMonica i saw it. Looks interesting, but it won't. Just like alternatives to facebook and twitter when their management started going all fascist too.

any mods around?

@iLuvLogix @MisterPositive was here a few hours ago but none currently in the room

@iLuvLogix nope, just us regulars.
we're pretty high rep, can we do anything for you @iLuvLogix?
Actually, mods are a rare commodity these days.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
.
This chat room has just been Poed :)
@motosubatsu I think I frightened that one away.

Bee
5:03 PM
@RICHARD you frighten everyone away ;)

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica Has been taken care of already ;)
Was a quite unsensitive comment on an answer of a high-traffic question - I raised a custom flag and the comment got removed

@iLuvLogix good to hear it got sorted :)

@iLuvLogix you can also let us know in here, 3 user flags and it's gone too. sometimes that's quicker than notifying mods
@Bee it must be that tangible aura of evil that I project

5:19 PM
@Bee unbeelievable

I would say that I'm holding court today, but that doesn't usually fall under the auspices of the Jester.
Gotta love reorgs..... My role changed entirely.... no commensurate rise in pay, but plenty of more work, duties, and responsibility.

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica feel a job search coming on?

@ChrisE Surely. It is clear that they need me for transition, but I will make sure that we use the most up to date technologies and methodologies which will be of great benefit to my next employer.

5:37 PM
You think they're setting you up to lay you off later?

Hello....
I do check in to handle flags, I just cannot hang out and chat when work calls :\
@iLuvLogix Yep this was taken care of.

@ChrisE Yeah, I'm i a position where I'm going to be coding myself out of a job, but I'm building a rep, and building up my skills on the way out.

smart man

I've got a work history again, so the whole question of "can you cut it since your illness" is no longer an issue.

it wasn't my comment that got zapped, was it? I don't remember making any recently that were, shall we say, acerbic. But you never know.

5:47 PM
@ChrisE I don't believe so....

5:59 PM
I'm commenting less and less these days. No passion left in me

yeah, i get that
