Q: This question should not be closed as 'unclear'

Jan DoggenMisleading/out of date LinkedIn profiles - saying you still work for an employer when you don't is closed as Unclear what you're asking. There is nothing unclear about it. It seems on-topic (there are plenty of LinkedIn questions already - we even have a linkedin tag), my only objection is that ...

9:08 AM
whatever this was, it's deleted now: workplace.stackexchange.com/a/136890

I hate questions like these
It's just so annoying

seems better suited to academia.se
even though its not technically off topic here

Yeah maybe, it just causes so much controversy
It just all depends on reading the person you're making jokes about
People take things differently

9:29 AM
are there actually difficult questions on workplace
i feel like a lot are like doing the obvious thing

Depends what you mean by difficult
People have different opinions on what the obvious thing is

9:50 AM
Questions that don't get resolved by : "We aren't lawyers", "Bring up the point to X" or "Find another job"

10:02 AM
@ArthurHavlicek yeah.. they usually get VTC as "unclear" :P

This conversation has overstayed its welcome in this room and will be moved.
Please continue it there if you're interested in participating. Otherwise we'll resume normal business in this room.

Which is no business at all
congratulations on killing the chat again

That conversation is not better than no conversation.

There has been a lot worse said in this room in the past, and none of which have been criticised by any moderators other than yourself

really @doppelgreener ? so we get a little OT in here sometimes when things are slow. It never interferes with TWP related topics. Not sure what you're hoping to achieve by shuffling things off.

I am not other moderators. Many kinds of discussions occupy the room more or less in full so that other discussions cannot take place in the meantime: at that point sometimes a safety valve is necessary. This conversation was one of those: it's a profoundly personal topic that is going to involve strong feelings from onlookers and is not something the main chat room needs to host.

2:39 PM
well with all due respect I have to say you are massively overreacting here
the conversation was in no way hitting that safety valve point

I disagree.

as far as I can tell you are the only person who disagreed

I've also informed local moderation, so they are in the loop.
@motosubatsu I am. I'm also a chat moderator. I don't have to wait and take votes.

@doppelgreener I understand how your moderator powers work

You are welcome to continue the conversation — in the room I moved it to.

2:41 PM
that doesn't mean I have to agree that it was an appropriate use of them

Local moderation is more often than not a apart of such conversations

If one person speaks up in good faith(!) saying “I'm not comfortable with this conversation happening in the main room and think the room needs to be freed up for other topics, could it be moved?”, and I can recognise the topic has potential to make people uncomfortable or such, I'd very likely move the conversation to another room to allow for that to occur. Does that sound fair and reasonable?

3:07 PM
@doppelgreener probably yes, obviously I can't speak for all such scenarios but for the general case yes
particularly if for example the person's good faith ask was ignored
by the participants in said conversation

In this case that person was me.

except you didn't say you were uncomfortable
you acted unilaterally
had you said "hey guys this is making me uncomfortable"

No, you're right, I could have said I was uncomfortable as I moved it.

I would have stopped outright or taken it elsewhere

... but it was getting moved one way or another, because the conversation's place is not in this room. Not moving it is asking for the conversation to restart (or just continue outright as if nothing happened) when someone else drops by and reads some of the backscroll.

3:10 PM
and that would be so terrible because?
(bearing in mind you didn't mention feeling uncomfortable)

@motosubatsu that's the theoretical scenario where I do mention I'm uncomfortable and don't move the conversation otherwise

if you had mentioned being uncomfortable then yes by all means move

I'm mentioning it now. OK?

yeah I get that.. I was misunderstood what you were saying - I thought your " it was getting moved one way or another" was implying you would have moved it regardless of having spoken up about being uncomfortable

Oh. No, that's not what I was trying to imply.

3:30 PM
@Twyxz I've just seen the discussion in here. Workplace mods were informed after the fact; we weren't part of the decision-making. I'm not happy about what happened, and want to say a few things that I hope we'll try to follow in the future.

hey @MonicaCellio

1. If anybody in the room is uncomfortable with a discussion that's happening, please say so. People have different thresholds; reasonable people can think a conversation is fine while other reasonable people would rather it not happen.
2. If you're not comfortable saying you're not comfortable, maybe try to redirect the conversation?
3. Health is a touchy subject. If you're getting "um, maybe you need to see a doctor" comments, that might be a sign that it's time to change the subject.
4. Under no circumstances do I consider it acceptable to name a room in an insulting way. I've renamed the room.
5. Oh, and #1 is not a justification for discussions or comments that you know will be provocative or upsetting. (That didn't happen here, but just in case it's misinterpreted: I'm not saying that rudeness is ok if no one speaks up. It's not. We're all adults and should be able to self-moderate.)
@motosubatsu hey there. I wasn't ignoring you; just wanted to get all that out in one block.

@MonicaCellio I agree with Monica here completely.

@MonicaCellio no worries.. totally understand. was more of a "hello" "hey" than anything else

I usually am on it, but was checked out due to a production issue.

3:43 PM
thanks for those clarifications - that's pretty much how I'd always assumed these things were supposed to work
@MisterPositive no worries fella.. Real Life does have that irritating tendency to get in the way every now and again

4:02 PM
@Lilienthal does this mess explain it?

@Tina_Sea "this mess"?

4:45 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings Were you satisfied with the ending of GOT?

@MisterPositive no

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Same. Whole family was mutually disappointed....
Worst season of all of them IMO

@MisterPositive I haven't seen anything since mid season 4.. I think I must be one of the few

some good episodes....
but as a season the worst.

Agreed
The writers kinda phoned it in this season.

4:57 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings felt really sloppy

I never got why people like tv shows about fantasy
It always feels like a vastly inferior version of a book

5:13 PM
on the plus side i can cancel hbo again

5:49 PM
@Magisch it's difficult to do "right" in TV/movies, this is certainly true. But just because it's hard doesn't mean it's wrong for people to try - or that the end result isn't worth appreciating. It may be verging on the heretical to say so but there's some areas where the LotR films for example surpassed the source material IMHO

@IDrinkandIKnowThings LMAO yes, me too!

6:27 PM
@motosubatsu idk, maybe movies are just not for me. I read books very quickly, to the point where movies always feel slow and lacking in detail to me

@Magisch and there's nothing wrong with that
I err towards books for many things myself as well
personal preferences are the name of the game

I can appreciate the skill and effort that goes into making a good movie though
And my favorite stories are kinda not suitable for making into a movie, e.g the wheel of time series or the lies of locke lamora (90% of those books good mood comes from internal dialogue and background building)

@Magisch I love the Gentlemen Bastards series, agreed that it's totally unfilmable though (and it would suffer greatly in the process of trying)
WoT though... I'd say would work better as a TV series, you could cut so much of the tedium that Robert Jordan's style produced

It's a bit like Eragorn. That movie was horrid partly because the magic of the books is in the world building and the long developing relationship between eragorn and his dragon
Which the movie degraded to a mount (Yes I'm still mad at that movie so many years later)

I'm currently on Winters Heart in my latest attempt to actually finish WoT.. and I have to say that I still maintain that WoT is a superb 7-book series shoe-horned into 14

6:40 PM
It does drag yea

Robert Jordan could certainly build a very rich world and knew a damn good story.. but his writing was mediocre at best

and you notice the jarring shift in style on the later books
Then on the other end of the spectrum, there is "The name of the wind"
Which is a 400 page book I desperately wished was 4 1200 page books instead

WoT drinking game: every time someone "folds their arms beneath their breasts" you do a shot - one way ticket to a liver transplant list
@Magisch was that when Sanderson took over?

yea

oh and agreed on Eragorn btw - the movie just turned it into a bad star wars clone with dragons instead of light sabers

6:42 PM
I was so disappointed with that

@Magisch I haven't actually made it to any of his books in the series yet - although I'm a huge fan of his "own" works

Mostly eragorn is generic fantasy but the dragon <-> dragonrider relationship dynamic is unique and so well expanded on in the books and they completly butchered it
I wish Patrick Rothfuss would write more though

@Magisch I've got some of his kicking around in my Audible account

be careful the second book in kingkiller is about a third pure fantasy smut - and gets extremely graphic

@Magisch lol... good to know
generally I only use Aubile in the car when I'm on my own anyway
but the heads up is mucho appreciated
I was listening to The Dresden Files last year when I was in a traffic jam and forgot that I had my window down while there was a particularly erm.. graphic description of an erotic dream

6:47 PM
heh

the person in the car next to me who had their kids in the car did not look happy

Whats the name of that series of japanese books with the shadow power thing
Ahh tales of the otori

@Magisch not ringing any bells sorry

that is some quality fantasy
I lost a whole summer to that series

is Kingkiller "a bit smutty" or "later books of Anita Blake" smutty?

6:48 PM
The first kingkiller isnt
the second one isn't until it suddenly is
about 50-60 pages of the pretty short book is pure smut
like full on, as graphic as you can get, no holds barred

dang

after that it mellows out and is like 10% smut for the rest
be ready for a lot of on the nose instrument analogies

hehe.. I'll have to report back
on that note.. think it's time for me to hit the road
leters

Q: We're testing advertisements on The Workplace

Juan MMy name is Juan M and I'm one of the community managers here on the network. You can read more about some of what I'm working on here and here. For several years we've had advertising on technology-related sites. But many of our sites aren't about technology at all, so we haven't sold ads for ...
