A: How to convince management to hire less software developers?

DarkCygnus How do I convince management to hire less of these types of guys? Unless you are in charge or working for the Recruiting Department, or are in some other managerial and decision-making role you shouldn't be trying to do this. If they are hiring these software engineers it is because they fe...

@DarkCygnus ... or the question gets deleted and you don't get anything. :/

I don't think it should be, had a valid question, despite it's initial phrasing

Q: How can I address a being paid less that my male colleges with similar or lesser roles in my company?

GIngerLadyDevI am a female developer that has been working at a company for two years. Last November I asked for a £3500 pay rise which I believe will put me inline for what I should be paid for my role. I was promised that the pay rise would come in January with the annual pay reviews, it never happened. I ...

I updated that question to focus on addressing the sexism part. If you voted duplicate please consider retracting your vote or voting to reopen.

Hi all, could someone please offer valuable advice here: workplace.stackexchange.com/q/116059/81811 ?
@MaskedMan I sort of count on you. I tried to write a good reply, but since I feel very much emotionally involved in the matter, I cannot offer anything that wouldn't be heavily opinion/emotion based
Also I feel like we, as a community, can do better than "HURR DURR MAYBE IT'S JUST YOU THERE'S NO PROOF"
If someone feels that way, there must be a reason to it. We can offer going to HR, we can offer asking for a legal advice, we can suggest talking to manager directly... Please, do not let him down only because OP cannot explain everything in details. This is too big of an issue.
Maybe OP has some sort of limitations, or maybe it's so stressed that cannot talk about the issue in a logical and comfortable manner.

@RafM. Thanks for that. I did have a look at that question, but it seems that the OP hasn't specified an actual goal there.

Can we please help him achieve it?
as, can we please suggest improvements or edit his post so it fits this SE purposes?

Sure, if he states what his actual goal is. Does he want to change the manager's attitude? Does he want to complain about it? Does he want to avoid getting distracted by these comments? Not clear what exactly he wants to achieve here.

I am sorry I am not doing it myself, my hands are shaking and all I want to type is 'go to the fucking laywers and burn that shithole down' lol.

I have worked with quite a few foreigners in the past, and they tend to be dismissive of Indians in general, doing their best to carefully avoid crossing the line. For the most part, I just ignore them and focus on my own work.
On one occasion, one foreigner posted a mildly abusive comment on my code review, along the lines of "this nonsense wouldn't work because X". The said reviewer was about 15 years more experienced than me. I stood my ground and responded calmly to the comment. It later turned out I was right, my "nonsense" would actually work and their reason X was in fact nonsense. The reviewer quietly ate humble pie and has stayed away from my code ever since. :)

Btw., is Indian a correct word? Shouldn't we say Hindu people? Or then we exclude people who are not of Hinduism/Jainism/Sikhism faith?
I am not a native speaker and wouldn't like to use terms who some people might find offensive.
(this is a serious question, I really would like to know)

A citizen of India is Indian, it has nothing to do with being a native speaker or not.

I meant - I am not an english native speaker, hence the question
thank you for the answer

hello
morning everyone

@RafM. I offered some advice. It's easy to get emotionally involved, believe me I know. But the way to deal with bigotry is to prove it to be false, not to get angry, unless you channel that anger into industry.
@Linkx_lair good morning. How may we help you today?

Hi @Ri
So I am looking to transition into more of a big data engineer role in next couple of years. A technical recruiter reached out to me w/ a Big data engineer opportunity involving Scala/Java and designing ETL pipelines & spark.
I have Scala & Java experience (About 1 year scala and such) - really loving scala a lot (and developing it more on the side- currently just transitioned onto a front end dev role as the previous scala role contract ended)
I am not sure how ready I am to take the role as a Big data engineer currently- i am largely still in the info gathering and planning stages. And i don't want to be too off putting to the recruiter. Would it be appropriate to like tell the recruiter this and like ask what skills and competencies they found to be most relevant for Big Data engineer so i may work on developin?
I do have years of experience though as developer and especially with Java & Oracle PL/SQL, and working with fairly large sizeable data (ie hundreds of thousands of records, and products)
... maybe i am just overthinking this and it was a stupid question >.<
@RichardU do you think i should go ahead and just like not say much and try to push forth as much as i can to try and get the role? or just tell the recruiter that i am still kind of in the planning & info gathering stages - and seeking to become a big data engineer in a few years?

Q: Was it overly rigid to put this question on hold?

Time4TeaThis question: Being made redundant, but asked to do contract work after finishing -- how should I negotiate my contracting rate? was recently put on hold, as primarily opinion-based. However, this seems to me to be overly rigid, given the question has received 45+ up votes and the top-voted answ...

@Linkx_lair Yes, you are overthinking it a bit. Talk to the recruiter and ask for input. Also, see if you can get some advice from people who are already doing the job you want to do. Ask them for help and advice... then save their numbers as they may become job leads in the future.

4:24 PM
yeah- sounds good @RichardU

@Linkx_lair Any time you need help, just reach out. I've got plenty of experience in the workplace and I enjoy the opportunity to help people.
@Linkx_lair also, answer a few questions or post a couple of your own so you can bump that rep up a bit. Don't be shy, we don't bite ;)

yeah- will do. :) thanks

Q: Reopen question: Absonded from a reputed company after 7 days

Richard UI have absconded from a reputed company after 7 working days before signing any offer letter. What could be the consequences? This was obviously not a duplicate, not legal advice that couldn't be handled by someone with simple HR level knowledge, and appears to have been closed for nothing more ...

Hello people

@D-Raz G'day. How are you this fine day, mi amigo, mein Freund, mon ami, 私の友達, मेरा मित्र, Amico mio

sup @D-Raz

I have started my new job, and I'm liking it.

@RichardU - Why do you have a problem with the sexism question?
is it just because you do not think it is sexism?

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I don't have a problem with it, I just require something substantial before I will vote to reopen. I'm well aware of the problem and a coworker of mine has faced it. But just because something exists doesn't mean it exists in this case.
"I feel" is not evidence.
and I wasn't one of the people who voted to close to begin with.
If I had had a problem with it, I would have been one of the voters
@D-Raz that's great! good fit, eh?

8:24 PM
@RichardU It's only been a couple days - but yes the fit is good. I am learning the tech stack I've been craving and the people are helpful

@RichardU That you are taking a stand against it is making me wonder if I am missing something or if we just disagree

8:45 PM
@RichardU I think I get it. You dislike the question because it contains too many squishy details

@IDrinkandIKnowThings yes, it's too squishy for me.
How have you been, BTW?

I dislike the squishiness too
I have a new job... so that is good...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings good! I know you were going through a rough patch. Glad you made it through!

Now see if I can figure out how to keep from having to scuttle the rest of the ship
