@MaskedMan - why should you loose job because of this book. This book just increases the chances to keep the job. If you pay for your losess, every employer would be happy to keep you because he does not have risk.
But yea, I agree, its insane. I do not get why such programming star like he write this. My colleagues recommended his books and videos, and I noticed this book has the topics I am very interested, so I am reading. I guess I will just take the advice carefully.

@Will_create_nick_later you might. There are reasons to have phases of very intense, long hours. I definitely appreciate the 100 hour weeks I did for the better part of a year. They were hard, and did lead to me changing jobs so I could spend more time with my family, but they led me to a better, wider range of jobs, and dramatically improved my ability to cope with stress and challenge

@RichardU My kids went to school (about 15 years ago) with a brother and sister with the dumbest names I've ever seen. Phonetically "oh-RON-juh-low" and "luh-MON-juh-low". Spelled Lemonjello and Orangejello. No lie.

@ChristopherEstep My (soon to be ex) wife named our children. She went for strange spellings for both. I've joked that she put so many vowels in our youngest girl's first name that she'll have to find a nice Serbian boy so it balances out. Serbian names are known for a distinct lack of vowels. I actually knew someone with the last name of Tvrdy. Not a single vowel in his last name.
The only strange-ish spelling we have is for my daughter Ashlee. But that's not unheard of and has the benefit being distinctly feminine unlike the more common spelling Ashley
@RichardU How about North West? :o Not sure what would be worse for her growing up, the strange name or knowing that she is the daughter of two people famous mainly for being douchebags.
@RichardU I wouldn't personally go that far, but I'm much more interested in "what steps would you take to find the problem" followed by an explanation why. That tells me nearly everything I need to know.

You need to think about the underlying message of what you're saying. If that's what you think when they tell you you're doing fine, you're essentially questioning their own competence, integrity or both.
One minute you feel like racing Jesus across the Galilee and the next you feel like Lloyd Christmas. Trust your colleagues to not sabotage your company to make you feel better. :)

The friend or relative didn't go in and do the work, didn't get projects done and didn't have to get along with your coworkers. Don't sell yourself short.]

@Lilienthal (moot now I know, but...) No no, you should always give the community a choice, and second place can still matter if SE needs to call up another mod later. On the election currently in progress on Mi Yodeya, the founder of the site is a candidate -- and yet two other people stood, too. Any of the three of them would be a fine choice. Don't assume that only the highest-rep user, or the founder, or whomever is a worthy candidate.
@MonicaCellio Oh I'm aware, hence why I said I "would almost have to". I saw your comment in the election chat about it and I agree with @RoryAlsop that it's good to have at least a few candidates in.
I quite like how Reddit has this thing where following an external link to a thread opens it in read-only mode with some message to the effect of "Please do us the courtesy of not voting if you are not a subscriber."
Something like that would be useful for the HNQ but I doubt SE considers the system broken considering that it's the main source of traffic between sites.

Hmm, practical answer to a personal question. I suppose it's a good answer in a way but it's likely going to stop non-practical answers from coming in.

@Lilienthal Thing is, you do have to join a Stack Exchange community even to upvote! You have to at least link your main site account. It's still trivially way to create an account and start weighing in though, so I see your point.
True but we get a lot of people coming in from more technical sites who seem to easily forget that what we're talking about here tends to have far greater consequences than a broken build.
While vote inflation is ultimately a minor concern, the bigger issue is that it's common for answers that "take the moral high road" to rise to the top while answers that consider professional image and consequences or the reality that people can't afford to torpedo their career over e.g. a few hours of unpaid overtime go un-noticed or are even downvoted for being "unjust".
When I first joined The Workplace, I was pretty shocked by some highly upvoted answers that would seem to seriously jeopardize workplace reputation at best.
