I wish we could pin a F.A.Q. to the main page that includes things like, "It's OK to say you were laid off in interviews". I hate that people apparently think it reflects badly on them that their employer ran out of money. Or that it would be impolite to say so.

Make a meta post and hope it gets hot? @BSMP

@BSMP I guess we have this question on the topic:
56
Q: How to convince potential employers that I was not laid off due to poor performance

zxwjamesI worked in a big company, and was laid off during the company restructure, along with 2000 other employees. This was well covered in the news. It was definitely not because of my poor performance; on the contrary, I believe I did such a good job on my project that the company considered it didn...

But ultimately it's not our role to "re-educate the masses", people have to search for a topic to get sent our way first. :)
But it's indeed strange how few people understand the differences between being laid off and being fired.
Of course, the fact that plenty of hiring managers don't understand either is an additional issue. :|

9:32 AM
@Lilienthal Oh, it wasn't something I was seriously suggesting.
@Lilienthal Although that's a nice dupe target.

Oh no, that's fine. It's something I've considered at times as well. Certain sites like ours would benefit from a more FAQ-oriented landing page or something on the Ask a Question page. But I suppose it would be a departure from our identity as a Q&A network.

@Lilienthal I think the issue is that most easy to find job/career advice is about getting a job, raise, or promotion. I don't think I've ever gotten career advice on how to prepare for being fired.

TBH I think if your work history has you being let go in 2020 everyone is going to know it's not because you're bad at your job...

@Bee that's going to be very true I think.. a great deal of what we previously considered "normal" is going to be thrown out the window for some time

Bee
Starting to see people I know getting notices now that furlough is ending

9:43 AM
@Bee yeah :( I think we all knew it was coming but it doesn't make it any less sad

Bee
Hopefully they will all find other jobs though...
How is your company doing @moto? Not hit too hard I hope

@Bee doing ok-ish as far as I can tell, we've lost some team members which wasn't entirely covid related. It's looking reasonably stable from where I'm standing
so just keep trucking on I guess.. you?

Bee
10:00 AM
@moto oh well that's good to hear! Yeah I work in reg-tech so actually a slight uplift due to all the loans being taken out to keep people afloat...

@old_lamplighter Is that you I spot? How are you?! I assume the wedding was put on hold...

'sup

@Bee The wedding almost didn't go off, 3 days prior, we got permission from the church to have it in the garden, just 7 of us there.
The rest on Zoom.
@motosubatsu Hello.
I needed the break though.

@Old_Lamplighter glad to see the COVID hasn't snacked on ya

@motosubatsu I probably had it back in January when it first hit the US. I was in all the right airports to catch it. But, looks like it wasn't my time.
I'm also in the worst area... suburbs of New York City. Looks like this tough old bird is pretty tough

1:01 PM
@Old_Lamplighter either way you're still kicking which is the main thing :)

@motosubatsu The hoarding was insane. I talked to the staff at a supermarket near me, during the early days of the hoarding, they sold more meat in a week than they normally sell in seven months. We still cant get proper cleaning chemicals.
The good thing is that since I was dirt poor, I always keep reserves of everything.
I also made a mistake in ordering some dried vegitables, and ended up with a stockpile that should last me the rest of the year.

@Old_Lamplighter the supply situation in the shops here has more or less returned to normal, but yeah it was a bit mental for a while

@motosubatsu I work in the supply chain. You have no idea how close it came to collapsing.

@Old_Lamplighter oh I can believe it - I'm currently working for a company in food production, things were a bit extreme for a while

1:48 PM
@motosubatsu The laws here in the US contributed to some of the shortages. We have a real problem with what's called "regulatory capture", which is when the big businesses get the politicians to write laws/pass regulations that help shut out their competition.
The end result is we had shortages, because when the big guys couldn't handle the demand, the regulations that they helped write, kept them from producing more, or allowing anyone else to do so.
Protectionism came and bit us on the backside

yeah. .I'd seen some of that going on, although obviously with the benefits of not being in them

@motosubatsu yeah, we had milk being dumped, animals being slaughtered, and fields plowed under, because of those regulations. Then, since so many ports were closed, we couldn't get the equipment required to ship containers on trains or trucks, because... no containers.

@Old_Lamplighter Aww that sounds like it was probably pretty sweet and internet. Plus having everyone on zoom means you don't have to pick and choose who comes I guess (silver lining)

@Bee a friend of mine from Sweden was able to attend remotely, so yeah, it was nice

Bee
Oh awesome :) How is married life then? (I assume pretty much no different). How is everything else too?
BTW I was way over thinking that whole remote thing - my boss was just like "urm yeah ofc you can"
Then the rest of the team (and world) joined me with it anyway
but thanks for your help!

Great that it worked, @bee
As for me, I needed the break from here. I had way too many issues in RL to deal with. I went back to the office early, which helped. Even though I'm high risk, if I had stayed home much longer I was at a far greater risk of misusing sharp objects in a way that would tend to leave me living impaired.
I'm MUCH better now :D

Bee
So glad to hear that :) And glad to hear that you stayed safe

3:35 PM
@Bee the almighty isn't ready to take me. Probably because he has no idea of what to do with me.

Bee
Ahah still deciding I guess - hope you keep him perplexed for a good long time

Is it me, or is the voting in here looking more like Reddit than anything else. The Harassment question is getting little advice, and much scolding.

Off topic, but this is about the funniest thing I have ever read: The reviews for sugar free gummy bears amazon.com/Haribo-SUGAR-Classic-Gummi-Bears/product-reviews/…
