Q: Stack Overflow is doing me ongoing harm; it's time to fix it!

Monica CellioOver the last month, Stack Overflow Inc. has violated its own policies and precedents to cause egregious and unnecessary harm to me -- to my reputation (personal and professional), to my health, and to my safety. This harm is significant and ongoing. It is past time for the company to correct ...

@ChrisE Looks like OP is not going to come back. :)

@Snow yeah, if they didn't cancel me in a week, there's no point. I'll leave later when thi mess is handled.
@JoeStrazzere I just cancelled my deletion, for now. Until this mess with monica is settled, one way or another, I will stay.

Yeah, it's not great at all. As you can imagine, the CM team are stretched pretty thin firefighting all over the network. I've raised this behind the curtains, so if you did feel the need to self-delete, I can call in an escalation and get you (or anyone) some service.

@Snow as I posted in Meta, I do not envy you.

We all want a resolution to "The Monica Situation", but I fear that it's gone on for so long that there won't be any positive outcome. We all want SE to own the professional and personal hurt that's been caused to her off-site and would like to see an attempt at recanting those words. You, me, other users, other moderators, and (I suspect), other CMs all want this done. However, SE (as a company) has blackboxed this.

@Snow my take on the whole thing is that the pressure has been building for years, and the person they chose for their ritual sacrifice has the user base inflamed to the point where it's only building. The repeated censorship of discussions and numerous attempts to save face on this site has made things worse
Like someone trying to fight a fire by stomping on it, sparks have spread to other platforms from email lists to hacker news, to reddit, to FB and twitter, and even panels on "cancel culture". It's worse than SE suspects
The continued comments that M is orchestrating all of this is making people even more angry by suggesting anyone who opposes their actions is somehow too weak to think for themselves.
aaaaaaaand it's on slashdot now too.... phew

1:01 PM
<shrug> 10% of the moderation staff handing their towels in, countless threads created, pressure from users and moderators alike hasn't resulted in any action from SE to mitigate the damage they've done in this respect. Rest assured that there are fires burning both in front and behind the moderator curtain on this one. All I can do help help out TWP and support mutual respect between people posting here.

@Snow If I didn't know it any better I'd say it's because legal says no
or execs say no
we're at well over 250 threads and 3000 posts and god knows how many tens of thousands of comments, by the way

@mag that's only the ones that still stand. The ones that were deleted, WOW

mag
no I'm counting deleted posts

@RichardU Okay.

@Snow hats off to you man, I wouldn't be able to handle it.

1:16 PM
@RichardU I'm trying. Because someone has to. And taking my hat off did nothing to help TWP.

@Snow same reason why I cancelled my deletion. After this is settled, I'll prob leave, or stay, I don't know at this point. I think all of us with good intent are highly conflicted right now

Yeah, you've seen my posts over here, in chat, and on Main Meta. I've not been afraid to speak, and attempting to guide.

@Snow I really appreciate the fact that you came back. It's clear they're in no position to replenish moderators right now, and it would just hurt the site to not have any at the moment
hurt in a way that isn't easily fixed or mitigated and might linger long after they sort out this mess

Yeah, I did what I did for my own sake, for my own priorites. I can't speak for the other resigned mods. They are fighting their own conflicts and I've not really seen what they're saying now - I only read their resignation posts.

1:33 PM
@RichardU You've had some time now to process the CoC amendment. Are you happy about following that amendment now (esp considering how little that scenario will occur)? If you have any concerns, please ask.

1:45 PM
@Snow I am against compelled speech, regardless of the intent, on principle. It claimed it's first casualty before it was even implemented. No, I am not happy at all, and I will not compromise my principles. I will continue to protest the amendment on principle.

So when you're faced with someone who wishes you to address them using a non-binary pronoun, you'll simply disengage?

@Snow I will act according to my principles.
But, to your point, I doubt the topic shall ever come up.
there is nothing "simple" about this, though. Reducing the struggles that someone who is trans goes through to a simple pronoun policy seems rather insulting.

That doesn't really tell me much. but if you disengage without comment, that's fine. If you want to protest about it, there's a couple of million threads on MSE that you can contribute to. I know you appreciate the fact that I need to keep things as respectful as possible to everyone.

Most recall gender dysphoria in very early childhood, and go back and forth for years, even decades
@Snow as I said, I don't envy you.

Yeah, we're not trying to trivialise the struggles that non-binary folks have, we're just wanting to treat them with respect when we do interact with them. That's all it is, that's as far as the CoC amendment goes.

1:53 PM
@Snow yeah. I've had some conversations with lower functioning autistics than I. But disability is no excuse, I guess
@Snow then, there are trans people like contrapoints, and Blair White who have gotten into trouble about this very issue.

Yeah, moto is also on the spectrum and has had difficulties, but I feel he sees the limited effect it will have in real life interactions.

@Snow I know autistics who cannot even use contractions.
not everyone is as high functioning as Moto, or myself.
These are the people I worry about.

@RichardU maybe we should hear what they have to say on the matter? There's been a meta question on it

@avazula The meta question where I addressed it has been deleted

@RichardU In which case, we help, or encourage them to disengage without escalation of emotions.

1:57 PM
@Snow yeah, have you ever tried to get an autitstic to disengage on anything? Even I have a problem with that one, and I'm VERY high functioning.

@RichardU Huh, we surely aren't talking about the same I guess? I was thinking about this one

So, how are we going to be respectful of autistics

Gotta go. Bye everyone!

@avazula I will check that out, thank you.
@Snow so, eventually, there will be a clash, and I will take the side of any autistic person who is caught up in it, as I know from personal experience how difficult it is for even high functioning autistics to deal with sudden change.

@RichardU Heh. Well you tell me. How should I step in if things get so heated that you can't shake out of the cycle? I'd much rather do that in a way you can deal with than a way that you can't (if that makes any sense).

2:01 PM
@Snow I don't see any difficulties with myself. I worry about others.

Self-awareness of the effect of our opinions on others is something that we all have to deal with.

@Snow and a lack of such is endemic to autism, so much so, that it's even in the diagnostic criterion.
This is analogous to punishing the blind for not seeing, the deaf for not hearing, and the mute for not speaking.

@RichardU Yeah, I get that. And this is sometimes what makes discussions heated and frustating, for you and the person you're interacting with at the time.

@Snow the "apparent lack of empathy" stems from the fact that we experience the world differently, think differently, and if you have alexithymia like I do, feel differently.
Unless you can tell me what music looks like when you hear it, why strobe lights make you want to smash your head into a wall, or why being touched feels like an electric shock, you can never have a conversation with me on those subjects, for example

2:29 PM
@Snow so, I guess the ultimate answer is: I will adhere to the policy as best as I am able.

Then that's fine. You're not compelled to engage in conversation with anyone if you don't feel that you can. I do recognize, however, that it can be difficult for you not to engage when directly engaged yourself and know that can be a difficult situation.

2:52 PM
AND, two more convos on meta were deleted.... It would be better to be discussed in house, well, I suppose Reddit is going to enjoy the traffic.

I don't see why you guys think i SE should back down to pressure. All advertising can be good if you know what you're doing, and this is a LOT of free advertising
