6:21 AM
Start to the new week and my last day for the month :) Happy days
Morning all

6:35 AM
Good for you! I'm taking a break next week, going up to Anglesey for a few days.

6:48 AM
im off to santorini

Yeah, very nice. I'm not jealous. At all.

Ahahaha good, Excited isn't even the word

Hopefully it won't be full of tourists at this time of year. Or at least tourists with hoards of kids.

we picked going back to school time to at least minimise the amount of kids
just back to school but a few weeks in haha

still, plenty of parents go on holiday during term time and just pay the fines.

7:11 AM
Yeah true, Santorini isn't exactly a kids holiday area though
Well wouldn't be my first place to take any kids

7:31 AM
@Kilisi currently 4C - will peak about 12C later today. Beautiful clear blue skies.
we have bits that are entirely mountainous, the lowlands and the highlands are very different. But our biggest mountains aren't big compared to proper mountains. Our rocks are so old that they have been worn down

Q: Can we be careful with delete votes?

Jan DoggenI notice questions getting delete votes that IMO should not be deleted. Current examples: Should I ask for my job back after being terminated? (1 vote) Should I recommend a fired colleague? (1 vote) Both questions, though closed as off-topic, certainly do not meet the requirements for deletion:...

8:37 AM
Are delete votes a privilege further on into reputation?

@Twyxz yep
can't remember the exact amount required though

it's between 5000-10000
10000
thanks @snow

Q: Offensive coworker on an online game

Pillip FI am a fresh out of college student and a huge gamer. I recently got a job towards the end of this summer and met my team, which consists of a number of people who are in their late 50s. As I am a huge gamer, I just go home after work and play online games or watch people play. I decided to play ...

^ I'm going to have to stay out of that one
otherwise I'm going to get myself in trouble

It seems fairly obvious what the issue is there. Then again, there's no real excuse for that kind of retaliatory abuse.

8:54 AM
@Snow yep.. no excusing the content of the co-worker's response. But I don't have any sympathy for pathetic bullies who whine when their target does something they don't like.

@Snow There are no good people in that question
OP is a massive git for doing that and hurling racial abuse is also bad

The major gaming platforms have abuse systems in place for this kind of stuff.

If I was OP I'd refrain from going to HR because HR too dislikes massive gits

it made me have a little bit of a laugh none the less
Neither of the participants on that post would have done anything in real life but it was over the internet they can just complain to others about it
I mean OP didn't get an answer he would've liked but hey is what it is, don't be stupid

tbh though all jokes aside as HR I would take a very dim view on a new coworker admitting to cyberstalking and targeted harassment of a senior colleague

9:21 AM
well
He stumbled upon the senior's stream
There's people who stream snipe streamers all the time and in fact twitch (big streaming platform) have no problem with it
but obviously you can't expect them to take it well when they're being constantly and unfairly outplayed
Then go ahead to plan on taking it to HR because 1) It'll make you look silly 2) senior will find out it was you

9:37 AM
I wonder what kind of response this guy expected when he asked this question. Obviously, it's going to hit HNQ and get lots of views. But realistically speaking, he can't really expect much in the way of confirmation in attempting to throw someone under a bus like this (even if he did get trolled into throwing abuse).

9:53 AM
Who knows, he basically said I trolled a guy into rage and now can't take the response
what did he expect to happen
Haha great fun I've just died 250 times to the same guy

I just don't do online games; I just prefer the standalone games.

10:10 AM
morning fellas

Good morning. And congrats on the job offer.

thanks @Snow . Still in limbo of to get contract or perm.
contract = save money, no pain hols and its "OK" rate
perm = can't safe money, paid hols. same rate
paid not pain *

@Snow Singleplayer game literally numb my brain into mush, I'm pretty sure I play games for the competitiveness rather than enjoyment hahaha :/
@Nofel I haven't kept up with the rest of the conversation but why can't you save money on perm

contractors have a higher day rate than permies. mostly.

10:28 AM
If you can't save money you either need to find a better paid job or lower your costs surely

speaking of which Is it a time to talk about day rate>

@Nofel what do you mean?

or something like "if i am going to be perm, will my annually wage change"

contracting you can barely save money either though? Does it not mean when you take your holidays you'll have to spend what you have saved anyway
@Nofel As snow said, Contractors tend to have higher pay?

@Snow its 108 PD

10:31 AM
Dunno what others experiences are like, but I work in the UK. As an employee I get 1 day of holiday for every 11 days I work, since my contracting rate is almost double my perm rate, contracting means much better holidays for me.

I am happy, pays my bills, we dont have anything but I think i am to blame, I cannot focus on myself to be better. but I talked to recruiter who is on same floor and told him what I am doing n in 6-12 yrs I will worth 300-400 PD if i focus on myself.
@TolMera in order for me to save money for hols I need to pay off my debts or have a good pay but I m happy given 3 months on unemployment and I know i am not good, i was in company which was behind and pulled me behind as well. so now I am place where I can do what I want to and use new tech while i also study them and it is growing company and I see myself forming a team as well in there

Fair enough

10:51 AM
Do I waste 2 hours flexi to leave early and start my relaxation and holiday early or do I just stick it out
I'm too excited to get away

11:29 AM
@RoryAlsop a refreshingly cool day here is around 27 degrees C. I'd be bundled up like an Eskimo over there.

lol
we had 6C this morning

@Kilisi 27 C is a heat wave over here.. it's basically headline news

If you're in the UK @motosubatsu seeing the sun is classed as a heatwave

@Twyxz true! either that or it's time for someone to log a ticket with cloud maintainence

it could be minus 1 degrees and people would go mad because the suns out

11:44 AM
@Twyxz yup.. we've all seen "that guy" who has to wear shorts if the sun is out regardless of temp

I grew up in Micronesia which is much hotter than here, I don't acclimatise to cold for a long time, more than a holidays worth anyway.

Lol that guy is my manager
well my mentor
He wears cargo shorts with a shirt

@Twyxz he has good taste then

@Kilisi is your profile picture you?
If so then I can 100% imagine you wearing the same outfit as my mentor

yep, thats me, I don't look like that anymore though, lots more tattoos
but cargo shorts and shirt are good practical wear (Y)

11:56 AM
also pre-congratulations on 100k since I'm going away and no doubt you'll be there by the time I return

cheers, no idea how I got to 99... ahaha

@Kilisi I'm the exact opposite. my favorite temperature is ~10C
Cool enough that I can wear more then one layer of clothes and warm enough that you don't freeze going outside or need a heater

I straight up don't have a favourite temperature because i'd get bored of each one eventually
If it were always hot/cold I wouldn't want to go on holiday to similar locations and have something to look foward to

@motosubatsu that's me! If I'm not in a suit I'm in shorts and t-shirt for about 10 months of the year

12:18 PM
@Magisch depends what I'm doing, I used to enjoy working every winter in NZ forests in any weather because I'm active all the time and warm. But over here my server room is too cold for long periods because of the aircon.... on holiday I don't tend to be particularly active most of the time, and thats when the cold gets me most.

My wardrobe consists of uniform black tshirts and various jackets
And one SE tshirt

at 27 C I would wear two layers, tshirt under a shirt
but I pretty much wear that whatever the heat at work.

I'm lucky to work in an office with absolutely zero dresscode
So a tshirt or tshirt with jacket and jeans works

a tshirt with nothing or jacket and jeans hmmmm
interesting @Magisch

So ( (a tshirt) or (a tshirt with jacket) ) and ( jeans )

12:27 PM
Hahaha I know I know :/

t-shirt, jeans & trainers (sneakers in yank-speak) in my current client's office - except when I'm visiting the manufacturing site when I need to wear PPE so have to add a super-stylish hi-vis jacket, hard hat and steel-toecap boots.

+1 for style points

1:39 PM
@Twyxz it gets worse - if you don't have steel-capped boots of your own the loaners are steel capped wellies :D Everyone only wears those once before they go out and buy their own boots

1:50 PM
HAhahhaha it's like PE in school
Remember your kit or use someone elses sloppy shorts
You'll never forget that bag again

@Twyxz indeed.. although that said I used my boots at home over the weekend and managed to leave them there - I'm hoping there's no cause for me to go to the other site today!

(Sitting here in silence waiting for @motosubatsu to get called over)

2:12 PM
gm all

@Twyxz shh!
@IDrinkandIKnowThings afternoon :)

2:33 PM
I'm just waiting here until someone gets me a biscuit for breakfast. Where's my biscuit?!?!

@Snow you need yourself a junior staff member.. I'd suggest one who is 18 and "attractive" and of your preferred gender(s).
Presumably their innate attractiveness makes the biscuit tastier

I don't think "gender" has a plural form... just saying

oh and I'm somewhat surprised that Q was closed as "unclear", I'm not saying it was the best worded question ever or one that's going to go down as a classic but it's certainly clear enough

I think it just smells of being contrived to hit HNQ.

I feel somewhat served lol :)

2:42 PM
@Snow a possibility I'll admit.. but whatever happened to "assume good intent"?
@TolMera <mic drop />
:D

3:12 PM
I got an odd spam email this morning. It just said "URGENT: Kindly respond to my email of Friday". No embedded links, no nothing. I guess it's just wanting me to respond with "What email?" and sting me from there.

1 hour later…
4:13 PM
Morning everyone
@Snow huh... odd...

Morning Gary!
or Afternoon in Civilized Parts(TM)

sup @motosubatsu
Know what guys, today I am one year older than yesterday :)

@DarkCygnus it's the glue factory for you!

4:47 PM
If I say I need to work from home, and also leave early, does that sound suspicious?
Neither is frowned upon, by itself in our workplace, but I'm just wondering about the combination.

5:19 PM
If you leave early I take it you are going home to work @NotThatGuy

It's "early" in the sense that it's an hour before the end of the official office hours, but I plan on making up for that by starting earlier and taking a shorter lunch.
I mean work from home the whole day, and then leave early (we have a meeting which I can attend remotely, so working from home is not an excuse to miss that).
Ok, "leave" might not have been the best choice of words - I just mean stop working.

5:52 PM
now I'm confused lol :/ @NotThatGuy
so, you are working from home, and also stop working a bit earlier than the official hours
How do they know you stopped working earlier?

6:12 PM
@DarkCygnus Because I have a meeting around the end of the day, which I'll miss (not because I'm working from home, but because I'll stop working early).

does this happen often or is it just a few times that have happened lately @NotThatGuy

It will be the first time.

@NotThatGuy oh... then I would not worry at all about it... just try not to make a habit of it
and if it is because some valid reason I suggest you inform your boss before finishing earlier

It's for an interview, so I'll just be somewhat vague with the reason, which shouldn't be a problem if it doesn't sound suspicious to begin with.

hmmm
well technically you have to "run some errands" and also because "personal reasons"
You could also take a day off...
but, again @NotThatGuy why not ask on the main site?

6:28 PM
Because my question is "does it sound suspicious" (opinion-based), not "how should I handle it"

how should would also be off topic :/
but I'm sure you can phrase it in a way that it can be posted
like focusing on effective and professional ways of leaving early for an interview
or ways for asking for such to your boss

Well, then you already have some good answers to consider :)

It's hard to find motivation to work sometimes. There are just boring tasks to do...
... and I'm sort of uncertain about what I'm supposed to do
... and the best person to ask is on leave
... and the temperature control in the office sucks
... and I'm lazy
... and I'm probably also distracted by the beautiful girl sitting nearby

6:45 PM
@NotThatGuy play your fav song and code along :)

2 hours later…
8:20 PM
hi all! we have a question on IPS that the user wanted to migrate over: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/18768/… - wanted to get some local opinions on whether that looks ok for your site before I do anything?

hey @EmC
checking it out

@DarkCygnus cool, thanks :)

@EmC seems fit for TWP... I would suggest perhaps cutting down the details a bit, as it is more story than actual question. Also, the "is this wrong" I fear is off topic everywhere on SE... however, there is a valid question down there. I also suggest rephrasing the core question so it sounds less opinion-based
Not that it's not answerable, as it is highly answerable, but people here are a bit trigger happy when casting VTCs

@DarkCygnus good point, I'll see about editing the "is this wrong" part first

Perhaps using "reasonable" instead of wrong
already have an answer in my mind for that post if you migrate it :) feel free to ping me if you want to give another round of proofreading

8:32 PM
Ok, so something like "Is it reasonable for us to eat outside, apart from the other employees?"

yeah or
"Is it reasonable for her to expect us to eat lunch with them every time?"
or just "Is it reasonable to expect us..."

@EmC It has 4 opinion-based closed votes, and The Workplace isn't more accepting of opinion-based questions than IPS is.

Also, answering if it is reasonable or not, IMHO, lacks a bit of a goal... a more productive question would be "How can we politely and professionally turn down her request to do groceries/eat with them every time"

yeah that is IPS's problem with it too ;)

@EmC still, I am sure it's better fit for TWP than for IPS
I see your edit, after migration users here can tailor it further if needed

8:37 PM
sometimes it seems the context of being in the workplace seems to make a question answerable here vs. there but, that's why I asked before migrating, since I've never been super active here

@EmC we also have a neth tag here so that one you can leave. I'd also add something like company-culture
we also have a lunch tag
and also perhaps colleague tag, as the one who complained was this woman

Q: Reopen "How to handle a group activity during an interview..."

David KThe question How to handle a group activity during an interview when the participants are applying for the same job as you? was recently closed for being too broad. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea why. The question is perfectly clear and answerable as is. I'd like to request that this questi...

8:51 PM
thanks for the help!

no problem :)
If you care telling us (me) when you've migrated it so we can add our answers, I'll appreciate it :)

2 hours later…
11:20 PM
@DarkCygnus have at it ;)

11:40 PM
@EmC included an answer of mine :). If you may, consider pruning your comment as it's a bit outdated now
(as the migration already took place)

@DarkCygnus I can't, I've raised a flag though. I'm guessing it's because I didn't have an account on here before the migration
