12:40 AM
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster just sent u a mail.

1:01 AM
@Cascabel I know what you want to talk about. I was sitting on your flag for a couple of days wondering about the best way to handle it (ok, I wasn't sitting two whole days wondering about that). Then another mod came along and handled it. I will check with the mod team what we want to do about it.

Trouble arriving on track 5

5 hours later…
6:28 AM
@Cascabel It looks as though you're in conversation. Hope you get things sorted out to satisfaction.

7:04 AM
morning all

7:16 AM
wahey! finally got myself a Populist badge

Morning
which one is Populist again?

Morning @Cronax
"Highest scoring answer that outscored an accepted answer with a score of more than 10 by more than 2x"

7:31 AM
Populist sample here . The accepted answer has 30 votes. My answer has 91 votes. I therefore was award the populist badge.
But the accepted answer should be scored more than 10 for this to happen.
And good morning.

8:03 AM
@Cronax Remember these numbers: 11, 23. Don't ask why these numbers are so important, I don't know either. Just one of those things SE does.

XD

The numbers 19 and 2112 are also important, but only to a certain demographic.

Honestly, it is much easier to understand, "Populist badge is awarded to the highest scoring answer if it is not an accepted answer, has a score of 23 or above, and the accepted answer has a score of 11 or above". I find the current wording confusing. It sounds like "outscored ... with a score of more than 10" is one rule at first, and then you realize that's not it, so you have to re-read it. By the way, what's this "2x"?

... and in our next lesson, we discuss the Generalist badge.....

1 hour later…
9:11 AM
morning all

Good morning Nofel. Hope you're well.

I am good snow, how is it going with you?

Not too bad thank you. Life is pretty much the same as always.

got a interview today
hope I get it
I applied for junior position to get me going and back in the game

It's great that you're getting interviews. It's certainly a lot better than just having your applications not progressing.

9:27 AM
you might be aware of it or not
I got rejected from many companies

It's still good that you're not waiting too long between interviews.

yea

9:48 AM
"here's a bug that only affects this one specific version of our software and is no-repro in the current verison. work out why it's happening" oh joy, I just love things like this
@Nofel have answered your Q

morning @motosubatsu love your second point
and what do you know, another bank send me a test
this time I am familiar with it more than last tim
coz I beeen doing ajax and json
yay

sounds encouraging

2 hours later…
11:35 AM
@Nofel I got your email, it's taking me some time because my reply will be long.

understood

@motosubatsu I got the populist a few times. It happens when you tell the truth as opposed to what the person wants to hear.

@Nofel Good article, but I would avoid that commentary. Sounds like ranting and badmouthing to me.

@MaskedMan agreed. Everyone has had a bad boss, so there tends to be a lack of sympathy to talking about one.

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster yeah.. seen that happen more than once

11:44 AM
@motosubatsu I had a great mentor when I was young. He gave me many a verbal ass kicking. Sometimes it's what needs to be done for someone's own good. As a friend of mine once said. "People say never kick someone when they're down, but I assure you that if you do, they WILL get up"
In my opinion, it is no kindness to soften the blow of a hard lesson, as you negate the lesson

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster I think it's the difference between kicking someone when they're down and poking them until they get back up

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster I agree.. although I add the caveat that I wouldn't make a lesson any harder then it needs to be to get the message through as that can be counter productive too. I aim for the Goldilocks-zone :)

@motosubatsu @Cronax absoulutely. I follow the wisdom of Garak from Star Trek's Deep Space 9. Never use any more force than necessary. Precision is key, and using the right tool at the right time in the right way to the right degree.
If someone needs their hand held, I'll hold it, if they need their butt kicked, I put on my steel toed boots.
When I was a project manager, I had one poor guy screaming at me in frustration. The thing is I was listening to him, and rather than get all uppity and report him to his boss. I found out what his problem was, and gave him some quick training. (took about 2 hours). The end result was I had a VERY LOYAL friend for the duration, and I got my reports before anyone else.

12:00 PM
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster I'm a big proponent of finding the root cause of something before acting on it, for that reason exactly

@Cronax exactly. Most problems are simple, not easy, but simple. The problem is, of course, people use those two words as synonyms.

Neo
Greetings

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Truer words were never spoken. Or written in this case...
@Neo Salutations!

@Neo Good morning! Is today the day you join the league of legends? :D

Greetings to the Legend!

Neo
12:09 PM
I think it might be...
60 more rep points....
Honestly is amazing to me that it happened.

Soon, my young apprentice, SOOON

Only 6 more upvotes then? Sounds like we can try and give you the last nudge...let me look at your history :D

Neo
yep, only six more. I think with the two question I answered already today I will get there. ( I won't balk at an assist though :-) )

@Neo I gave you a bump

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster There are no cookies in the Matrix. Only spoons.
Thanks!

12:21 PM
@Neo So, [Entering Sleep in Restricted Mode] after that? 😛

Neo
@MaskedMan Possibly. My other goal is out of reach, so we shall see.

It is gonna take me a long time to get to 50k and Legendary. I usually have spikes of HNQ-assisted rep gain, followed by several months of inaction.

Neo
@MaskedMan 35 Rep today will do it.

wow, 190 today already.
hee hee hee
@Neo you'll make it. It's early.

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Yes, I think so too

12:26 PM
I want to see all of the political undesirables with legendary status and at least 50K rep!

@Neo Just about another year to stick around, and then you should have it.

Neo
@MaskedMan Its highly unlikely. There are several that are ahead of me in that regards.

@Neo You, Snow, Masked Man, and IdrinkandIknowthings need to get up over 50K

@Neo Well, I thought all of the other contestants (except one) were ahead of me in the previous democratic event, but I somehow ended up taking the top spot. So you never know ...

@Neo I can't give you much of a Rep bump, as I am having a hard time finding an answer of yours that I haven't upvoted.
@Neo and I'm never running again, so... no competition there.

Neo
12:32 PM
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster We'll see about that one.
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster And this one, when the time comes. But who knows when that will be.

@Neo I'll campaign for you. :D

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Ha! I think our special guests will return if and when that happens.
Although where have they been lately??

@Neo Oh, if our special guests return, you won't have to get your hands dirty. That's the beauty of having someone campaign for you. They haven't been back. I think that they are either congratulating themselves or are ashamed of their behavior. I'm betting on the former.

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Yes. Agreed. I think they figured out my /ignore flag too

12:47 PM
How on earth was this closed as "unclear"?

Q: Refusal to sign a change in status form

LisaCan my employer terminate me for refusing to sign a document that will change my status from exempt to non exempt?

@Neo I agree with the could shoulder treatment.

I'm not saying it's a great question (as written) but I struggle to see how it could be called unclear

@motosubatsu I voted to reopen. The usual quick-close subjects are prevalent in that one.

Neo
I will vote to re open that one as well. It isn't the greatest question but it can be answered.
Needs a location tag too.
@Snow
Is honor spelled honour in the UK or anywhere outside the US??

@Neo I appreciate that I'm not Snow but yes it is spelled "honour" in the UK

Neo
@motosubatsu LOL we are allowed to take breaks. Ask anyone, they will tell you.

hey @motosubastu are legends allowed to take breaks? why no @motosubatsu you handsome devil they are not
@Neo sorry I asked someone and they said that legends aren't allowed breaks

@motosubatsu If I had to guess, the lack of the location tag makes it unclear From A Certain Point Of View

@Neo [Entering Alarm Clock Mode]

I am itching to use that superpower, but you guys keep behaving so nicely here. :(

@MaskedMan are you disappointed in us boss?

@MaskedMan sorry chief, I'd forgotten that you don't like to be called boss
i shall endeavor to remember that in future my leige

Neo
@Lilienthal Hello sir.

@motosubatsu I also appreciate that you're not me.

@Neo [Time To Exit Now That Big Boss Is Here]

@Neo I was trying not to wake you.

@Snow it would get very confusing if we were both you

@Neo So are you legendary yet or do I need to find a few more of your answers to upboat?

Neo
@Cronax I am.

1:14 PM
I have to say that I something spell Honour as "Honor" so that I don't unnecessarily confuse my American friends (and to pacify the red squigglies)

@Snow I bounce between the two to appease the red squiggles of the machine I am using at the time, at home it's British English while at work it's usually American English

I'm just too lazy to work out how to change the spell checker language setting thingy.

@Snow since I usually can't be bothered to change the dictionary on Chrome I use a great deal of american spellings around here to appease the dreaded squigglies

Amen to that.

Neo
My badge has not cycled through yet, but yet, it is done.
Fun fact...Big Joe got his badge in 2014

1:20 PM
@Neo It'll take about 15 mins or so. There's a grace period for people deciding that they should really have downvoted your answers instead of upvoting them....

Neo
@Snow Is that a real thing?
It took two more years for the next one to be awarded.

@Neo To be fair, Joe is a pretty tough act to follow
2

Neo
@Cronax This is still his site IMHO and he is the first of what I consider Elders. Very impressive what he has done to say the least @JoeStrazzere

@Snow It also gives some time for downvote stalkers to prevent him from getting the badge. :P

@Neo Congrats! Can we expect to see you as a series regular in Season 4
?

Neo
1:39 PM
Still haven't gotten it yet. I got the alert...

@Neo Welcome to the esteemed legendary club. Remember, for the proper induction to bring all of the ceremonial items to the appointed place at the appointed time. Especially the duck. You mustn't forget the duck

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster someone ask for a duck?

A what?? Oh... Carry on....

I think I'm quacking up

Hello

1:46 PM
@Neo So what, in your opinion makes someone an elder in here?

I m back, the interview went well.

@Nofel Good to hear!

Woot! Boiled milk for everyone!
2

@Snow I'll get the kettle ready!

1:48 PM
in the kettle
lets get it steaming

nice one @Nofel fingers crossed for an offer!

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Just don't use an electric kettle...

@motosubatsu I have noticed what I lack
gonna grind on that
@Cronax I did

@Nofel So the next time you want to boil water, it will taste of stale milk?

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster LOL
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Uh oh. Its ambiguous. But in general someone who has been supportive of me when I first came on, and who I consider a better writer than me. (And maybe smarter than me too)
@Nofel Congrats!
Its official now, I do have the badge. (BIG GRIN ON FACE)

@Neo so it was just a case of Legen-wait-for-it-dary

Neo
@motosubatsu Nice play on words sir.
@Snow I bet that sent your MOD radar for a spin.

Now.... I'm pretty sure I can delete badges and reset rep counts... Where was that button....

Neo
@Snow LMFAO
@Snow I am pretty sure I can find you. Might cost me some cash, but I can find you Mister Moderator Sir.

You wouldn't know what to do when you did. lol

Neo
@Snow Buy you a beer at the nearest pub.

2:02 PM
@Neo congratulations, not that it is official.

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Thank you sir. There are only 8 of us.

Like the Nazgul.

There were 9 Nazgul

Or, more properly --Nazgul.

Neo
@Snow LOR reference?
The Nazgûl (from Black Speech nazg, "ring", and gûl, "wraith, spirit", possibly related to gul, "sorcery" or a wordplay on "ghoul" ), also called Ringwraiths, Ring-wraiths, Black Riders, Dark Riders, the Nine Riders, or simply the Nine, are fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. They were nine men who succumbed to Sauron's power and attained immortality as wraiths, servants bound to the power of the One Ring and completely under the dominion of Sauron. They are first mentioned in The Lord of the Rings, originally published in 1954–1955. The book calls the Nazgûl Sauron...

2:06 PM
@Snow You are probably looking for the "delete this user" button. :P

Neo
@MaskedMan ARGH!!!
@MaskedMan I have to admit, you would be much more difficult for me to find. ;-)

@MaskedMan I just reset his password. He'll have a bit of fun the next time his browser session expires....

Neo
@Snow LMAO
OMG, that is MOD Power abuse! @Snow

@Snow It is tempting to reset his user name to Mister Sort of Legendary.

Neo
@MaskedMan Ummmm
Mod abuse.
LOL

2:08 PM
Or just call him "Leg End".

Neo
The only goal left for me is to crack 50K, after that I will see what's next.
And that other goal @MaskedMan
[Entering Sleep Mode]

How about changing his profile pic to this? ...

@Neo I'm sure you'll get one of those infinity stones the next time 'round

"User error. Strike user and continue"

Neo
@Cronax LOL I could use @MaskedMan Thanos picture and name....

2:14 PM
Am I the only one who remembers having to put stickers that read "ANY" on the spacebar in order to deal with users who would call in saying "I can't find the 'any' key on my keyboard"?

@Neo No, that is not allowed. "You should have aimed for the head!"

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster When I worked in IT support, I literally had a caller complain that his cup holder was broken. And another one that was calling because his PC wouldn't start, where it turned out that the power was out in the whole building.

@Cronax yep. Been there, done that, laugh at people who call them urban legends

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster I'm always reminded of a great quote, from George Carlin if memory serves. "Try to realize how stupid the average person is. Now realize that the fact they are average means that half of them are even more stupid."

Neo
@Cronax Classic. Does Happen....

2:26 PM
@Cronax unfortunately, that applies to many IT people, who often couple it with arrogance. Any time I want to bring someone who is giving the users a hard time for not knowing what we do for a living I tell them to think about how they'd want their auto mechanic to treat them.

@Neo "> Are the lights at your network cable blinking? rumblerumblerumble < I don't think so, but it's hard to tell because the power in the building is out..."

Neo
@Cronax Gears are grinding too

Keyboard not found, press F1 to continue.

Neo
@MaskedMan Thanos demands your silence.

"I think my computer is being invaded, I got a message about 'General Protection Fault!"

Neo
2:32 PM
GPF GPF GPF!!!

@Cronax "I got a warning message that my computer was infected and it told me to click on a button. I did, but I don't think it worked because my computer is running slow now"

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster That actually did happen to my while I was on the ole support desk back in the day....

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster "I didn't click anything or do anything weird, but now my browser screen is almost completely taken up by these toolbars"

@Neo I cleaned up no less than ten viruses that way.
@Cronax Oh, we had fun with the FBI virus, especially the later version which disabled safe mode..... boot disk time!
It was fun with my dad. He had dementia but was so good at hiding it, we didn't know. His computer was a mess.

Our company's IT department quite regularly sends out phishing emails internally. Someone always falls for it.

Neo
2:37 PM
@Snow That is actually genius.
humiliation is a good teacher some times?

For sure. These emails only get send out within the IT department, but still people fall for it. It's easy enough to spot if you know what you're looking for.

@Snow a previous employer of mine did that regularly. if you failed to follow the procedures to report a suspicious email, you had to take the IT security course again. That was punishment enough. Nobody fell for it more than once.

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster That method is beautiful in its simplicity

@Neo forget humiliation, at my previous employer people didn't want to suffer through the IT security class again

The IT security course is a bit of a joke as well. If in doubt, just use the "ask IT" optioon....

2:44 PM
@Snow ah. ours was grueling and you had to take it until you passed it, and passing required a near perfect score. You also couldn't leave a chapter without taking the chapter review. Nobody wanted to do that twice.

saw this ^ on my way to work this morning

@Cronax and it was a classic example of something being simple, but certainly not easy, at least on the people having to take the course a second time. I knew one guy who was still annoyed a year after he got caught. He never made that mistake again.

Q: Coworker demands immediate assistance when having computer trouble

aaaI'm a developer at an agency and there is a photographer who works in office. She often has trouble with her computer, accounts, the internet, etc. so she comes to me when she needs assistance with things such as clearing cached files when she needs more space, downloading files, finding a file ...

Let's help this poor soul ^^^^^^^

Neo
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Fiiiiiiinnnnnne

Oh boy, here I go again

Attempt made.

2:58 PM
Respectfully, you're very wrong
he needs to stop enabling her terrible behaviour
and force her to use the help desk
help vampires won't stop their behaviour otherwise

I'm mainly prompting to get things sorted via the support desk. I'm not advocating actually helping all of the time.

@Cronax yeah, and that poor soul will learn just how nice nice people are when they don't go their way. I've had that bite me in the butt HARD more than once. Never again.

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Is it really 'if you do it once it becomes your job' though? Most people I know say it's more along the lines of 'if you do it more than once you're creating the expectation that you'll always do it"
I can understand how difficult the OP's position can be though...I remember being in a similar situation, the lady was very attractive so that aspect also helped to override my better judgement...

3:14 PM
@Cronax It's not really do it once, but if you do do it once, you'll get asked again, even if you say "just this once". It's better to not do it even once.
I have been burned by people who are nice and sweet, right up until they don't get their way.... DEFINATELY a trait of the Affably evil

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster My personal modus operandi is to help a person out once if it can be done in a reasonable amount of time, but as soon as I am spending too much time on the first instance, or as soon as a second instance comes up, I gently but firmly refer them to the official channels

Hey everyone :)

I was cooking up an answer, but yours pretty much has most of the elements I was including
@DarkCygnus Greetings and salutations

Know what, we just reached 19,000 questions asked!

@DarkCygnus Neo got his Legendary badge today :D

W00t! That's great news
plus, he is aprox 1k rep from reaching 50k

workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/114419/… this one seems to require our catch-phrase, anyone care to do the honours? :D

3:23 PM
Mr Milestones should have been his username

"All together now kids: HR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!"
2

@Cronax the user still doesn't clarify/rephrase
his edit was just to add that PD: I go to therapy :/

@DarkCygnus Yeah, not off to a good start
there's also waaaaay too much guesswork going on on the OP's part...

But his format and writing was way better than most new users, so :)

"I think that means..." "She seems to think..." "So this means..."
@DarkCygnus Touché

3:26 PM
yeah, I think he hasn't chewed this one on his own before posting

Neo
@DarkCygnus Thanks!

@DarkCygnus Incidentally, the OP seems to be a lady

oops, I just added a D*ck to OP, sorry

Which seems to be relevant in the sense that there may indeed be a jealousy component to the whole thing...

he...she... is there some more neutral way of referring to OPs?

3:29 PM
'they'
or 'the OP'

xe
xe = she || he

isn't "it" a bit ... offensive?

As much as I am a proponent of making people of all stripes and colours feel welcome, I refuse to start using newly made up terms to refer to people

I once tried using it and some user took it like I was insulting the person :/

3:30 PM
@DarkCygnus not as offensive as ""THIS""

I'll just puzzle out ways to avoid using pronouns entirely

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster lol

@Cronax the youtuber "Prince of Queens" (not referring to a part of NY) got lambasted for using someone's name and was accuesed misgendering them so... you just can't win

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster In Dutch we have a saying, which literally translates to: if you want to beat a dog, you'll find a stick easily
if you're looking to take offense, you'll find an excuse. Catering to that category of people is simply not worth the effort
3

@Cronax the meaning translates quite nicely.

Neo
3:36 PM
@Cronax DING DING DING!

I read a comment earlier today on this site that addressing someone as "he" even when you know the person is male is considered offensive by other people.

@Cronax people who use their disabilities as a crutch bother me to no end. They want to be catered to at every turn. I'm like "WTH????" I scraped and clawed my way up, ignored doctors every time I said I'd never be able to do something, all to improve myself to the point where, despite my problems, I don't need many accommodations, and these people just sit on their.... grrrr.

Neo
[Entering Sleep Mode]

@MaskedMan If anyone refers to me as anything other than "he", I will take great umberage.

I wonder how these people introduce their parents, "they is my father and they is my mother"?

3:39 PM
@MaskedMan If they're from Oklahoma they might (peculiar American English dialect there)

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster @DonThermidor_LobsterMobster I feel you. A close friend of mine has ME. This means she's constantly in pain, the only difference is the degree of pain she's in. Even with all that, she still somehow manages to go to work every day and be a functioning member of society. When you know people like that, it's hard to take the drama llama's seriously.

@Cronax growing up, someone started the rumor I was gay... as this was the 70's and early eighties, I got my butt kicked daily and I know people who were gay who got much much worse. If the worst thing someone has to worry about is pronoun use and raise a huge stink over it, they don't know how lucky they have it.
Not that we should all be deliberately rude, but still. keep a reasonable perspective on things
Oh my
I just realized something

We have now entered the ninth circle of hell

I actually just made an answer to that very question, it's a rush job though since I need to get going. Feel free to edit or leave comments, I'll try to make it a bit better later.
For now, I bid you all good day, until next we meet o/

@Cronax take care!
@MaskedMan @neo Does that post (above) have a bit of a bridge smell to you? Are we being poed?
Let's answer it with care.

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Possibly yes, but let's assume good intentions until we find out otherwise. That post could do with some edits though, I will try to take a stab at it.

@MaskedMan great edit. It's much better now.

@DarkCygnus They removed the "featured" tag couple of days ago after it got too many downvotes. :P
Generally speaking, you can get away with a crime if you are sincere about your intentions, but you won't get away with hidden agenda.
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster About that question, I am still not convinced that the dating has anything to do with it, but I decided to let it in.
In other news, I found out why I was getting those strange job recommendations on LinkedIn for executive positions. Apparently it has to do with including my voluntary superpower role on my profile.

4:52 PM
@MaskedMan ah. :D Not bad. I'm hoping to move into more of an architecture position myself. Coding is fun, but having to deal with bad data is maddening.

@MaskedMan I suspect that it was not posted by a woman.
I think our old friend "poonjay" may be back for more mischief.

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Why would you suspect it wasn't posted by a woman? It isn't that unusual a request (though clearly off-topic for wp.SE)

Neo
This is an amazing answer by @HLGEM

A: How to deal with passive aggressive behavior of coworkers after I complained about prolonged interruptions?

HLGEMLet's start with this is why people should not date coworkers ever especially not senior managers when you are not at the same level. This is complicating your situation as people around you have probably felt for sometime that you get special treatment even if you don't think so. No one I have k...

How was that saying?: You don't eat where you sh*t

@BradC it seemed like someone doing a bad impression of a woman to make women look bad, right down to the unedited original post referring to another coworker as "it". HLGEM's answer spoke to the whole looking bad bit. The OP's replies have also since persuaded me to believe that I may be mistaken. I had hoped that it was a troll post simply because the alternative was nearly beyond belief.
@Neo yeah, that was a world-class response by HLGem.
@BradC Also, we've had a spate of troll posts trying to make women, especially Indian women look bad. The moderators have even removed users because of that.
So, once-bitten, twice shy

@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Oh, thought that comment was in reference to the (since removed) "any groups for women in coding" post.

@BradC that one was just bizarre. That one could have been someone seeing if they could cause a row as well. The username was... interesting. The east village is known for it's artists, not it's coders, first off. It was a bizarre question, secondly, and it was made by a brand new account. Most people, myself included, don't start in the workplace.
@DarkCygnus The phrase goes "You don't shit where you eat", but close enough :D

Funny though, that what we eat we shit

@DarkCygnus yes, but you don't eat on the toilet and you don't shit in the kitchen

do we ...

7:09 PM
@DarkCygnus I should hope not. I prefer to keep the E-Coli count down.

Sjeez that's obnoxious
"Let's clobber everyone's terminal with a christmas tree every time they push"
I'm not even sure what it's supposed to mean?

11:21 PM
@MartinTournoij it's the Bitbucket bucket logo on ASCII art with the pride colors... I think...

11:33 PM
Yes, that's what I thought too
I just don't get why it should display that?
