@RoryAlsop it's a constitutional right and the supreme court in Heller v DC ruled that it is an individual right. The only way to change it is with 2/13 of both chambers of congress and 3/4 of the legislatures of all 50 states.
@ChrisE oh, I know that the US has decided it is a constitutional right. That is one of the things about the US that concerns the rest of the world - a country who has enshrined in their constitution something that was meant to protect the public from government hundreds of years ago, but that should have no place in modern society

@Snow harangued is probably a stretch.. lili was a touch brusque about it but not entirely unjustifiably so, I'm pretty well versed in the nuances of this area but was a bit lazy when I initially answered - essentially because I thought the question would get DVed into oblivion or even deleted so didn't feel like spending the effort
I actually took the comments about it being unanswerable as something of a challenge and decided to take my best shot
@MisterPositive one of the upsides to the way leave works for contractors here is that I don't have to worry about that sort of thing, how much or how little leave I take in a year is basically up to me
@MisterPositive the flipside of course is that I'm ridiculously bad at making myself take the time - at least when I was perm I'd get hassled to use my leave up, now I have to hassle myself! :D
@MisterPositive yeah I think this is a good strategy.. have been thinking I'll try and do that next year (although candor compels me to admit that this isn't the first time I've said that - I've just never followed through!)
@Nofel if they are wrong (I read your CV and have the perfect role...) or if they are crap (no research done) they go on my blocklist. You'd think the numbers would reduce over time...
@Nofel my wife and I are against burial so trying to decide what might be fun to do with our bodies once we go. Burning up on re-entry to the atmosphere is cool, but expensive and impacts the environment. Burial at sea is a bit meh (I'm allergic to fish) so I'm thinking of donating my body to science :-)
although being twanged into a tree (as Eddie Izzard suggested) could be vaguely amusing
but in the west that process takes huuuuge amounts of time

@Nofel friend of mine did his CV in a format that could be read as a pdf, rtf, tex formatted and something else. Clever, but didn't get him any more interviews...
@Snow All the roses in this garden are from previous cats. They make good fertiliser when they finally go, so we have always planted them with a small rose bush.
@RoryAlsop It's not a memorial garden as such. I dug a deep hole, put the ashes in and planted a rose on top. It's not overtly a memorial, but it is to me.
@Snow I drove through about half a mile of light snowfall this morning and we've had a sleet shower here a few hours ago.. nothing serious yet but it did make me sort out my remote access this morning should it dump a load of the weekend and I have to WFH on monday :)
@Nofel yep just checked and from the model after mine (so 2006 onwards) it was available as an optional extra, as snow says though it's not usually a cheap option
@Nofel two main reasons 1) they take ages to get up to correct operating temperature and are very inefficient while they are doing so and 2) on a modern diesel there is a filter called a DPF, this gets clogged up over time and can only be cleaned by doing a long run at relatively high speed
if you don't do the trips that can sustain a regular DPF cleaning cycle then it gets completely clogged and breaks meaning they need to be replaced which is very, very expensive
So the way it is now @motosubatsu @Snow my HP term end end of next yr, either I pay 6k or re finance it, or I can give them back with money around 1800 so I am out of HP and get the A6, which is more value by the end of 2 yrs which accoring to audi will be 12k
In both cases If I fail to pass my probation in next job, I still have to pay for my car
@MisterPositive Pretty often. I have a bunch of seasonal or anniversary pictures, and a few of me, that I rotate in when appropriate. In fact it's about time I went Christmas isn't it.

I worked from home today. The snow was coming down pretty hard and I didn't want to have to deal with Southern drivers. "ERMAGERD! SNOW! I CAN'T GO FASTER THAN 10 MPH!"

"I'm slowing down, so I'll just hit my brakes really hard. It's not like I'll slide or anything"
I was going through my parking lot at my complex doing fishtails (on purpose) and other people were barely moving.
No lie, this was my childhood. This was maybe an hour from where I grew up (and the whole state was like this)
So I have little patience for people who are scared of snow. :)
