9:03 PM
graduating must have really attracted a lot more people

You are asking something which really is not able to be answered definitively, since everyone will have different opinions on "what is acceptable" here. You could ask what generally is considered to be appropriate professional conduct by employers or how this will affect a future job search? — enderland 5 secs ago
that needs 1 more CV, it's opinion based

im all out sorry

CMW
voted already

@enderland already done

well, looks like its us 4 that cast the votes then!

9:05 PM
heh

@CMW so you got your nomination text drafted up?

CMW
working on it :)

@Chad "After having been on this site with Chad for over a year I am used to being mistreated by the users and feel I could continue to do so. Also I am a bit of a sadist and enjoy being mistreated"
@CMW me too, but its things like the above that i should perhaps leave out
ELECTION ENDS

on Apr 8 at 20:00

OOh just before my birthday

CMW
neat

hopefully there'll be 3 other candidates soon so I can withdraw my nomination lol

9:12 PM
I guess elections would be a time I could finally have some benefit on all my meta time I've spent

@AlexM. Naw don't withdraw! No need for that
@enderland you mean, benefits other than the support you have provided to the growing community right? ;)

uh I'm not moderator material and as long as we get extra mods I'm fine
all I want is for my flags to not sit in limbo for days anymore

@RhysW yeah something like that

You still have my full support solely for being one of the two people who got me into WP in the first place :P

we should elect Rachel as mod

9:14 PM
Yes! I havent heard from her in so long though, unless ive been unlucky and missed her every time shes here

rachel, jmac, and rhys - pretty sure that'd be a solid lineup (especially if we can keep jmort too)

the review activity (overall) sure increased since the elections started though
that costed me around 20 possible reviews today

lol I just had some good c/p fail in sending this link to a coworker - workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/21200/… lol

so my speedrun to 1000 first post reviews will be ended one day later

@enderland how come?

9:17 PM
@RhysW it was on my copy and I apparently didn't actually copy what I thought I was copying
so when I pasted and sent the IM it was that link hahahah

hahaha, he probably thinks youre hinting at something now :P

yup

hehe
the downsides of using this SE

yeah

people assume you cant be interested in workpalce without wanting a new job

9:20 PM
especially copying links to that sort of question

second only to sending your other half a link to relationships.se

thank god relationships is dead now

it died?
Oooh thought of an advantage: Vote for me, im single and won't have any time lost to silly 'relationships'.....*sob*
but seriously, relationships died?

@RhysW sounds like good enough reason

CMW
I liked relationships.se...

9:24 PM
@RhysW yes

people not taking it seriously?

it spawned offensive and weird content
I'm glad it's gone tbh
it was depressing

CMW
I enjoyed the discussion around my question on dating married colleagues

dating married colleagues? wha?
this isnt like the 'work wife' concept is it?

CMW
never heard of that one
but I don't think so, no

9:28 PM
basically people usually end up with a work wife / husband, most of the characteristics of being married without the physical aspect

you guys are the only ones on the whole SE that I've talked to
and actually think relationships was good

It could have been good, like most concepts, it only takes a few to ruin it though

everything in there was so opinion based it was almost impossible to not start contradictory and offensive discussions imo
it was basically dealing with people.se
but not in a workplace.se dealing with people kinda way

CMW
@RhysW That's definitely not it
I felt like BVR liked it, too

@RhysW shit, now I know what to call my mother's colleague

CMW
9:30 PM
DVR?
whatever the name is

@AlexM. yeah a site needs enough guidelines to be constructive, but not too many that there is no room left for content
@CMW BVR, you were right the first time :) if you mean the workplace regular

@RhysW this would be an interesting question here actually

i was thinking more blog post, but question might work too

CMW
@RhysW the same

@AlexM. I did not even know it made it out of A51

9:32 PM
Im better at remembering peoples avatars on here than peoples faces irl, wonder what that says about me

it died after like 10 days out of A51

CMW
I think the line between relationships.se and workplace.se is the line between bad subjective and good subjective

@RhysW you're like me

@RhysW :)

CMW
relationships.se was a little too far on the bad side of that line

9:33 PM
@CMW I think it's more general maturity, honestly

CMW
I don't mean attitude-wise but content-wise
the topic of personal relationships will always be more on the opinionated side, I would expect
even to people who act mature

the thing is there are too many types of relationship, and everyone insists theirs is the best way

CMW
and I'm all for acting mature

this is part of the problem we have on workplace, there are too many ways to tackle a problem, and most of them are based on opinions and peoples social instinct

@CMW Opinions are not the problem the problem is the discussion on them. I bet that is a site that could have done with out comments being public

9:35 PM
as long as we can keep people sharing those in a structured, organised, and constructive way though then we will do just fine

CMW
Politics, sports, sexuality. venture in those and you will face fights and flame wars. Maybe with some more moderating it could have been toned down to a working level

But I did not get involved there for the same reason I stayed out of Sexuality. I do not want my SE account linked with that type of content. And when you keep a good portion of the disciplined and responsible users out of a topic you end up with too many problem children and not enough good content
@CMW Politics is a disaster I think

@CMW but at the same time, look how successful gaming.se is

Sports is pretty good.

CMW
umm

9:37 PM
or was anyway

CMW
I meant the general topics, not the corresponding SEs :)

ohh

CMW
:D
bring it up at a table, in a bar, at a party
expect fisticuffs
;-)
anyway. no more distracting, need to work on my inaugural speech!

ive never been in a bar fight, or party fight, or fight for that matter, but then i also care not for politics, or sport
maybe there is a link!

CMW
@RhysW I'm evidence to the same

9:39 PM
@RhysW lol yeah
I post my goddamn first answer there and this happens

Q: Importing games back into steam

Marriott81Recently got a new pc, put the HDD from old pc into new one, reinstalled Steam however I want to use the library from old pc on new one but keep it on external. New pc has a SSD which I do not want to fill up so going to put everything going to the external. Any ideas please?

hehe ouch

didnt we get name that job title questions declared off topic?

@Chad i thought so
as every company will call it whatever they want with absolutely no consensus on it

and im out of votes :(

close or up/down?

9:54 PM
do things like 'what should i put in my resume' really fit in this site? is there a way they could be worded that make them more beneficial to us?

Q: Should i list JavaScript game development as hobby in CV, even if the quality is bad?

user17887I am a ASP.net developer and in my free time i sometime create basic JavaScript games because i'm bored/find it fun and it helps with my job as i get a better understanding and practice with JavaScript. I mostly use JavaScript in my job to improve responsiveness of our Web application and for a...

how likely is an answer to this going to be able to help someone else unless they have that skillset in that circumstance for example

bah I'll edit that, I like the question more or less

@enderland which one?

the one you just linked

(Y) thanks, ill be interested in seeing the result

seriously why do people not caplitalize "I"
I find it way more work to NOT do this
Hi and welcome to the Workplace! I edited your question slightly to make it a bit more on topic here and less specific to your situation. Feel free to edit if I changed your intent too much, I think I captured what you are asking. — enderland 10 secs ago
@RhysW

10:05 PM
@enderland wow really nice edit, you really changed my view on that question

@RhysW that's how I read that initially (I saw it in the CV queue I think?)
or maybe new post queue

Q: Proper Workplace Title for current Job

tekI am currently working at a company of 150 or so employees. My current Title is IT Specialist but I feel like It should be something different given the amount of work the job entales. -To paint the proper picture i am the only IT department the company has and users call for troubleshooting so...

too bad this person can't come to chat
@Chad

Hey guys, feel free to be mean as long as its honest, what reservations would you have about electing me as mod?
I'd like to know where im weak so i know where to improve :)

10:21 PM
@RhysW I don't really have any at all, honestly, you are a lot more reserved about moderation than I would probably be (though this is hard to compare? idk)

No i get that, i can be quite careful / hands off as i dont like to step on toes,
i can think of a few cases where that might need to change so thats a good one, thanks :)

@RhysW yeah. one thing this site has taught me is the importance of getting external perspective on who you are, because you can't really identify it well

Yeah and that's important in more places than just on this site too

10:50 PM
@YannisRizos Damn you Yannis!
my mod nomination is too long by 700 characters :(

@RhysW you're too wordy

yeah, im cutting it down now
the worst part is i already cut it down once :P
there we go! this time with 4 to spare
Vote Rhys for workplace 2014!
(Propaganda is allowed right? :P)

Q: Should the linked questions section list closed questions?

thursdaysgeekTo the right of the question there is a section of linked questions. Should that really include closed questions as well? I find it awkward to see an interesting question and go to it, only to find that it is closed. If it's not a good question, why publicize it? Here is an example I hit toda...

@RhysW you sir, have my vote
it doesn't matter that voting has not started yet
take it

@AlexM. thanks :)

CMW
This seems for of a cute comment than a real answer to the question, as it probably wouldn't work for a series of different interviews. If it's intended to be an earnest answer, would you mind explaining why this would be fine and would solve the problem in question? — CMW 42 secs ago
