I've stopped aggressively flagging stuff and just straight Down/Delete voting

@enderland "making a git repo" is a euphemism for what exactly? It sounds foul.

@jmac git repository, version control
country? wtf best typo ever

Ah, GitHub! This is one of those programming things. Apologies.

CMW
lol

(I saw 'git repo' and was thinking 'git' as you'd say to a dog, and 'repo' as in 'repossession' when someone is late on loan payments or something)

12:02 AM
I'm gonna repo your dog sucka

(I had this image of someone whose TV is being reclaimed coming after them with a shotgun (also being reclaimed) screaming, 'GIT REPO!')

Hi @jmac, @enderland Funny to see your thoughts on my question here!
Thanks for leaving comments. It did help me think through what I was looking for, and what I'd already tried.

@blazerr Glad we could help! Thanks for being a participant in your question -- it really does help get better answers

Very tempting to call the boss's bluff ;)

@blazerr Sorry, still reading through your edit, it is quite lengthy
> Have my managers failed to manage me properly? How, exactly?
This is not something we can answer (we don't know how they've managed you, or how you have been as someone being managed)
> In the absence of being told they were unhappy, but having seen warning signs, how could I have best broached the situation?
You didn't see warning signs, so hypothesizing about what you would have done in a totally different situation probably isn't the best question to ask either
(ditto with "What preventative measures could I have taken?")
> On my side, are there implicit responsibilities that I've failed to uphold as an employee? What are these, and what have I missed? How might I have contributed to this situation?
We don't really know what you have (or haven't) done, let alone how you've been communicating. Again, not a great fit.
> How serious is it that my managers have done this?
Ditto
> How could I keep this job?
Ditto
To be perfectly blunt, it sounds like you are upset that something unexpected happened, and want to discuss how to feel about it or what to do about it which isn't really a great fit for our format. If you knew why Andy was upset and wanted to ask, "how do I make up for doing X and improve my working relationship?" that would be a better question, but since you don't know what the actual problem is, we can't very well help you.
as explained in our help center, "You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face."

Q: What is a rejected migration?

UndoI have noticed that in both the 10k tools and in many Meta questions, 'rejected' migrations are referenced. What are they? How is one rejected? What happens?

6:47 AM
@gnat, oh dear, you posted my little story there in The Whiteboard? I hope it won't be seen as offensive.

7:18 AM
@jmac sure it won't. :) It's too awesome for that
today hot questions at Stack Overflow, lots of posts worth upvoting (if you catch my drift)...

Q: Difference between == and Equals() in C#

Mohammad ZargaraniConsider this code: int age = 25; short newAge = 25; Console.WriteLine(age == newAge);  //true Console.WriteLine(newAge.Equals(age)); //false Console.ReadLine(); Both int and short are primitive type but when I compare with == returns true and when compare with Equals returns false. Why?

Q: Force the compiler to ignore some lines in the program

user1436187Suppose that I have 10,000 lines of C++ code. 200 lines of this code are for testing purpose (for example, check the program and show an error message). Is there an way in C++ to ignore or consider some lines of the code (maybe with preprocessor keywords)?

that one wouldn't be hot if close votes would be taken into account (some readers think and vote that it's a dupe)...

Q: confusing code, compiles fine. How this code works?

eatSleepCodeFollowing code compiles and gives 1 as output, its a bit confusing for me. I tried javap for this but from there also I couldn't figure out. I have checked for similar posts but couldn't find out similar question here. Take look at the code: int i = (byte) + (char) - (int) + (long) - 1; System....

int i = (byte) + (char) - (int) + (long) - 1; fascinating code isn't it

Good morning folks!

CMW
well hello

So much activity! :D

Hi! New here, just taking a look around.

CMW
wow so activity much post very upvote
:)
hi @Chase, welcome to the watering hole
water cooler
@HugoRocha care to vote re-open here? workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/18439/…

Morning @Chase, feel welcome to judge! I mean... To chat!
And CMW, surely, some nice edits there
We have released another question from the cubes!

CMW
11:37 AM
@HugoRocha And a rather nice answer, I must say
:D

11:54 AM
CMW, you're judging yourself?

CMW
Who else could? ;-)

:)
The iron arm of the law, of course

CMW
exactly

haha
hey, I got a question.
The workplace is in beta; Correct?
When we define it's out of beta?
Is it automated? Or what?

CMW
I must admit I have no idea
it has something to do with area51 for sure
did you ever see our stats there?
I assume those have to be green for some period of time

11:56 AM
No, but I am not allowed in there yet by management :P
my manager sees no problem with stack overflow, workplace, and the workplace chat.

As long as I'm out of tasks, or not doing my personal tasks, that is
yes
here the internet is... very well.. protected? monitored? I do not know the word for that

CMW
your manager restricts where you're allowed to surf?

Yes, for all the company

CMW
ouh

11:57 AM
many folks here only have acess to e-mail and some official documentation for their language they're working on

CMW
god am I glad, I'm in a startup

Commercial folks have access to nothing, just e-mail and skype

CMW
can you see images displayed here?

Most of them are uploaded at amazon, right
so, no
imgur, imgshack

CMW
hm

11:59 AM
google images is free for me to use, but it's funny to see that most results go for blocked sources
:D
at home i gave a look at area 51 though, but i did not look for the workplace there

nope

CMW
:-/
You'd get problems, too, trying to bypass the filtering, right?

12:19 PM
it depends on how i try
:D

CMW
Nah, don't want to get you in trouble :)

I know how to do so without them knowing, but i think it would be unethical
and being a man of the law... gotta stay in line!

CMW
you could ask what the workplace thinks...
:)

I could, but you know, it would be a bad question
If i were to do it workplace alike, I would choose the answer that would probably fit me, or the one that conviced me on the contrary of what i think right now
Considering this, the probability is right that I will stick not doing anything unethecal
so the answer, would be by all means, unnecessary
I already know what I am going to do - stick to the law
got what I'm trying to say?

CMW
totally :)
and yes, like most other question on ethics we got lately, it would be pretty hard to answer
questions about the ethicality of some action almost invariably lead to opinion-based answers

12:26 PM
yes, but most of all, many of these questions will lead to answers. These answers, one will be choosen from OP that will confirm his action.
It's like a question looking for approval - even if it's not exactly that
but it's only natural, I guess
if I made that question, I would most probably choose on the spot a answer that will tell me to don't do anything and that is unethical.
:)

CMW
1:20 PM
@RhysW I think the point about not saying it outright, was kind of important to the OP of workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/18468/… . Like this, Joe's comment pretty much covers it.

1:57 PM
@CMW what is.. "when spun right."? On the internet the most close translation to spun i found is... dilatated? Is that right?

@gnat wow. really? lol

some of the questions from stack overflow really seems like to me "How do magnets work?"
But I am fine with it, considering that I really still can't explain correctly how magnets works. Oh well.

CMW
it's from 'spinning a story'

spinning a story? Spun?

CMW
2:13 PM
spun is irregular past tense of spin
I think
spin span spun
Spinning a story, as I understand it, means taking a bunch of facts, arranging them right, maybe just making things up to fill in the blanks and putting it out there as a coherent story.

@CMW Maybe but it wasnt really fit for the site, this seemed like the best alternative, relevant answers + closer to site topic
@gnat ooh is there an ulterior motive going on? :P
@jmac Oh you and your bright ideas ;)

CMW
2:33 PM
@RhysW Just wasn't sure it's worth it, with 4 close votes already, though good answers start coming in, so I think you were right taking that step

2:50 PM
I think I hate this place now
Wonder if I can do something bad enough to force SE to put a forever ban on me so I can never come back

3:13 PM
@CMW I see. Thanks.

@Chad Just because i came back? :P

@RhysW No I missed you man

:D so whats up thats got you down (bet you didnt miss my puns though)

Hi Chad :)

3:20 PM
Hi Rachel

Lol, hello Chad :D

@RhysW but of course! I just upvote stuff that is suggested for promotion (listed by SE algorithm) and that happens to look good to me. That it has "outscored" Workplace questions and redirected some attention from these is only a coincidence. :) Really, why don't people upvote more good content at SO? Like this one:

answered by Jon Skeet, it can't be bad. I think

@gnat wow that DOES seem helpful! I better favourite that too for future reference

long time no see :)

@Chad i agree with most, but some seem helpful,
what in particular dont you like about those ones?

3:25 PM
@RhysW funny thing is, while testing hot questions list, I discovered that those coming in there from SO are of reasonably good quality. It looks like moderation there is indeed good/fast enough to block bad content from getting into the list
yesterday, by gnat
@djechlin the difficulty is that no other site is SO. No other site has the number of active moderators to protect questions quickly, 20k+ users to delete bad answers, and the shear volume of other posts to cover up some of the damage on the front page. On smaller sites, we may be lucky if there's a mod on at that time, or a 20k+ user (much less three) and the front page moves at a glacial pace compared to SO. What works for SO doesn't necessarily work for the other, smaller sites. — MichaelT Jan 10 at 17:28

@gnat gonna have to agree with this

Anytime you find yourself answering the same question over and over and over and over … blog post time.

This is that blog post.

This cycle has repeated itself on more sites than I can remember — When a new community approaches the end of their beta period, users start looking forward to graduation. So when that 90th day looms, anticipation starts to turn into speculation about whether the site is going to survive.

Does this site have a chance of succeeding? Is this site viable? Visits per day — should we be worried? At what point will this site grow out of the beta stage? What are the crit …

That might answer your questions about beta sites @HugoRocha

Though 'my' site moves astronomically (hehe see what i did there) slow as its still a new small one. (For now)

@CMW Youre going to make me remember back to my torturous years of german lessons arent you :/

the amount of times i made that teacher jump is immesureable

not intentionally
she just reacted to the joke more enthusiastically than we thought she would

that's hilarious

my school days are full of stories of all kinds, except learning

CMW
only thing I ever did in french class was to bring an apple soda bottle full of cidre and drink it too, during a test
oh, interesting. Didn't know that when someone votes on a community wiki answer of yours you get to see all the votes in your reputation history. it just doesn't mention any reputation actually received (or lost for that matter)
not nice :) loads of entries, little rep

yeah no rep for CW answers but at least you know that youre being voted for

4:33 PM
@JimG. as with any kind of CW, it is to unlock free rating of highly collaborative content (lots of answers => highly collaborative) - that is, to make answers downvoting free. Code Golf are lucky in a sense that they have objective criteria to simply delete negative content (code that doesn't work), no other sites have that strong kind of protection, they have to rely on answers voting to rate stuff — gnat 1 hour ago

4:49 PM
I think we should just freeze all questions at 10 answers. At 10 answers we should suggest they get one of the others deleted or edited to include what ever you want to add to the topic.

I disagree :)

It would encourage pruning of the poor answers and downvoting them
2

lol I never would have thought it would be such ridiculousness to suggest a question become non-CW

There has been plenty of times on SO when new information comes along and a new answer is needed to address the latest framework versions

@enderland That quesiton was sent into CW by someone breaking the rules.
@Rachel I am not saying change it on SO I am saying implement new code on TWP

4:51 PM
hrrmm might be a worthy goal to try to trim everything down to 10 or less answers, but I wouldn't want it to be a rule

If it is not a rule then no one will care
Change happens because of pain. If there is no pain there is no reason to change

hrrmm I'd have to disagree with that too. There are ways for groups of people to work out and maintain guidelines without needing rules

problem is the "shiny rep!" motivation here is hard to fight :\

Q: Should we automatically protect all questions with more than N answers?

wafflesI was thinking, if a question has more than say 40 answers there is very little value in getting answer number 41. The chances of it floating to the top are slim. Does it make sense to automatically protect any question with more than N answers, so a user needs 10 reputation to answer them? (sh...

Change is probably easier to dish out if you have something to enforce, however it often goes down better if it comes as a result of community consensus

Q: Lots of not-always-useful but well-intentioned answers

Mark MayoIn episode 42 of the Stack Exchange podcast Joel Spolsky mentioned something along the lines that some sites (for example, Travel Answers) suffer a little from questions that don't always get useful answers - even when someone has good intentions. So, for example, someone asks a question about g...

Q: 30 answers ought to be enough for anybody

Mad ScientistThere is one mechanism currently that discourages too many answers on one question, and that is the autocommunitywikification after 30 (on some sites only 15) answers. This is an ugly and ineffective hack that abuses the CW feature solely for its reputation denial. I propose a more effective and...

@gnat I am saying 10

@Chad yes, that's why I call your approach Hardcore version

@gnat OK sorry thought you were saying that was the hardcore version

5:00 PM
@Chad yeah I spelled it a bit ambiguously sorry. I am neither for nor against this approach. Or, to be precise, I would like to first test less braindamaged hotness algorithm and only after that, make up my mind on that

CMW
Meta question: Will someone kick me, if I answer a question and then vote as off-topic? :)

@CMW I have done that though usually in reverse ill vote off topic if it doesnt get closed ill answer the question

CMW
@Chad okay, thanks

@CMW I used to do that because I answer questions to help people, so I'd help them then kick their question out :) But I know some people don't like that as it leads to them sometimes asking more bad questions

@CMW if you believe it is going to be a good migration and vote / flag to migrate, that could be more or less fair. Otherwise, keep in mind that answers tend to stay on the way of Roomba and may make it harder to cleanup content you wouldn't want to see at the site (vote off-topic often means this)

5:03 PM
I usually leave a comment explaining why it's off topic too in those cases (assuming one doesn't already exist)

@Rachel I dont mind the answers... when you would upvote downvoted questions in sympathy... that would encourage more bad questions

CMW
calling a clean-up background process roomba is... so obvious... why didn't I think of this before? Naming is hard...

Although ill admit if the question is blatantly off topic ill downvote any answers :p

CMW
meh :-P

5:12 PM
@Chad I tend not to sympathy upvote with the except that if a question is unfairly downvoted beyond what it deserves, then I might upvote to try to even the score out to what I think the question should actually be :)

guys, I'll be on my way sooner today. See you all

@CMW I think it's a bit silly to say "this question isn't good here" and then anaswer it

CMW
@enderland kinda sorta know what you mean

1 hour later…
6:30 PM
@enderland: People do that all the time.

I almost downvoted without even reading after that first line :)
I was going to modify it to "I think your question outlines exactly what your problem is", but wasn't sure if I should or not

7:16 PM
@Rachel I think you should do that

eh I left a comment for now :)

CMW
ok :)

figure I can always change it later, but I'd prefer it if the poster make that decision instead

That's a good approach, too

awwww yeah, relationships and dating is in private beta
