Updated: Obviously they can fire you and let you go but the question here is about disputed reason that they came up with which might not be true or are totally wrong, just to damage you further.

@BenBrocka If you take away the personal situation and leave it to the question in the title, sure, it's an answerable question, although it's a one-liner...either "yes, if you are under an at-will contract or guiding law" or "you should consult an attorney if it's a gray area".
