You see it's really difficult to answer these questions to help out those profiles and get some points, this is because most of the question on there is about this site. I am restricted, for some reason, to only answer those questions? But how, I just joined, so therefore I can't and I do not know much about this site . — New Member 1 min ago

@JourneymanGeek The timing of the lock isn't disclosed to the public until it is eventually auto-unlocked by the Community user, so even though you do set the lock to be timed, people will still assume it's indefinite unless you explicitly say it's not elsewhere. All three mods by closing single-handedly or by locking this question attempted to keep it closed. The mods actions made this post controversial. N.B please fix the line which says hardly controversial, I said it wasn't among the most controversial. Moreover, the post is packed with references, not opinions, roughly 90% of the posts on meta, questions and answers, have less substance and less supporting evidence than this one. — Mari-Lou A 1 min ago

@Mari-LouA For contreversial topic, I think the mod on MSE should let the community decide, its not like other meta where no staff are. On MSE mod act more on behalf of SO than anywhere else. Not for nothing they nammed the mod, not elected, but I think we should open another question to know what limit they are better to have. The goal is that for me, it's not healthly if CM use mod to shield themself from the communty feedback. — yagmoth555 - GoFoundMe Monica 25 secs ago

It took a long time to develop the concept of innocence until guilt is proven. There is a recent trend, especially on the left, of accepting guilt as equivalent to accusation of guilt and letting unfounded points of view dominate while putting the accused in the impossible situation of having to prove a negative. That is, how can one prove 'nothing' as in 'I did nothing?' This site is not capable of developing an alternative reality system of jurisprudence without paying heed to history. Instead we are treated to poor judgement based on autocratic fiat, a depreciated model of government. — Carl 2 mins ago

The CMs are not telling us what to do. Cripes folks. I don't work for SE. I don't have any particular obligation to follow the party line. I do have the power, and occationally the obligation to try to do what I feel is best for the community. Whether that's yelling at corporate - and that happens, or making a few people unhappy because people need to calm down. I'd love for SE to take a little more leadership, but Its entirely inaccurate and unfair to claim we're working on behalf of the company. — Journeyman Geek ♦ 1 min ago

While there may be a valid Meta question to connect Wikipedia's event with Stack Exchange's event, I think it needs to be properly bounded to keep it on-topic. For instance, #s 3, 4, and 6 here seem squarely off-topic. Parts of 1, 2, and 5 could be on-topic, and I would change my close vote if the question was edited to focus specifically on those parts. — Alex 2 mins ago

@Trilarion I care when people give negative feedback. Because that is an opportunity to learn something. Which is really hard when the feedback only manifests as downvote without any further explanation. Sometimes downvotes aren't surprising. But sometimes they are. And almost every time I then asked why... some other person would give suggestions what could be improved about the post. And note the reverse argument: isn't stack exchange about high quality content?! How do you get to that with users that don't care any more about downvotes?! — GhostCat says Reinstate Monica 1 min ago

That is a nice computation. Did you include also the effect of bounties? (not that it will be so much). @GhostCatsaysReinstateMonica Sorry, I didn't mean not caring about downvotes. I thought more along the lines of seeing them as a statistical thing. A single downvote caries only little meaning. Only aggregated they say something. For this post here, there are now 5 upvotes and 3 downvotes which means that it's somewhat controversial. Probably it means that people don't like everything that is written in this post or find the content is not so relevant or they think it could be shortened a bit. But I cannot read minds, it may be something else instead. — Trilarion 1 min ago

But this meta is targeted. It has goals and constantly tries to achieve them. For example just see the "Stop doing harm to a moderator..." thread. It can hardly become more targeted and goal-oriented. Still, the experience is not very satisfying if you try to achieve a goal but realize, the chances to actually succeed are rather low. But I would say that a lot of the stuff written here is constructive. But if you want I would be happy to be proven wrong. — Trilarion 2 mins ago

@Trilarion you cannot force people to take a stand. They have to be interested enough in something to devote their time to it - these people are found on MSE already. In whatever community you are - you always have a minority which are engaged, and a majority which is just part of the community but doesn't involve itself in governing it (I don't mean it in any negative form - you cannot have only chieftains and burocrats anyway; not everyone is going to elections, too, especially on local level). — planetmaker 32 secs ago

@metasnail Somehow the power that be have not come up with an alternative yet and communication has rather broken down. And I don't really see how it could be otherwise. If the company is only happy to react to praise but not to criticism how can you communicate? The lesson seems to be that nobody in the world, not even professionals from a company, can deal with a couple of hundreds or thousands of downvotes professionally. it just seems impossible. I think the most important parts are listening to this minority and explain things to it. The participants of meta are biased and not representative but they are also closer to the daily activities. The listening and explaining part doesn't really happen now and the expectations from both sides also seem to be wrong (We don't get to decide, they, if they don't want to talk, should just close the whole thing.). @Trilarion Yes, that makes sense. Nonetheless, even that depends on your stance a bit. Every vote (up or down) means: someone found your content convincing, or not. And sometimes (see the discussions on my answer here as example), there is really something to learn from any person who took the time to give feedback. Which is easier when the feedback is more than just a vote. — GhostCat says Reinstate Monica 2 mins ago

Yet, that was not good enough because the same mod the said if you make the question body match the title then I won't have a problem. @gnat The 3rd mod suggested that they (singular) could unblock the question if it became on-topic. Yes this question is being monitored because it's off topic yet it is attracting reopen votes. The question as currently framed is about something that happened on Wikipedia several months ago. Therefore it is nothing to do with Stack Exchange. If you can rework it - without invalidating the existing answers - to bring it on topic then it will be left open. it was then the title was edited, and the question at the end was modified. — Mari-Lou A 1 min ago

@Trilarion There have been a couple of hints from staff & community managers that the powers that be are looking into an alternative to the current Meta SE structure. Please may I respectfully disagree with this answer? Generally, it is not how Wikipedia works, which works fine. Specifically, I think that editors (at least editors with a certain reputation level) should be allowed to fix typos, perhaps marking them as a typo fix (new checkbox). I do not think it encourages contribution to say "if you want to put in a bit of work to make this better, then you're going to have to put in even more work to be allowed to". It also leaves posts (I've seen several) where there is a single blatant typo but nothing else to fix, so that the typo MUST be left there. — Mike Beaton 40 secs ago

I almost posted a similar answer. If every user on SO stopped all activity tomorrow...the site would still be useful for many years to come. The major languages already have lots of questions and answers archived on the site. The niche tags and newer technologies will suffer, but I think it'd take years before the existing info on the popular tags to become dated enough that it starts seriously harming the site. — Troyen 1 min ago

@Richard I don't think it was simply the loss of the mods. It lost a lot of the high-rep active answerers and users, which resulted in fewer votes and answers. Sorting by activity on the site users page reveals only a few of the major active users remain. This sounds good on paper, but it's much harder to put in practice now than it was...say a few years ago (and especially compared to a decade ago). Not just on SE, but all over the internet, people are more aggressive and openly negative about all kinds of changes than they used to be, and that drives both the people that want to have a civil discourse and the devs away because who really wants to show up to get yelled at? Also, I think there are very few things that the full community can get behind, the rest is controversial or more beneficial to one group vs another. — Troyen 28 secs ago

@PM2Ring That may be a topic for a different question but I think the discussion is relatively civilized and that is not really the problem. I'm all for civility, but I'm also all for having clear views and expressing differences. I think that the company owes the users clear explanations, something they aren't giving. @Troyen Not sure if this is really true, but with the existing material here we could probably test it. If it were true, the question would be how one can have a civil discourse with angry participants. That's probably a good question. On the other hand many controversial questions here are pure bike-shedding. People argue because the stakes are rather low (often it doesn't really matter much). It seems we all like a bit of drama from time to time instead of concentrating on the really important events. The events in the last two months are excluded from that however. — Trilarion 10 secs ago

@Trilarion FWIW, I like your answer here. IMHO, one of the problems with the current structure is that it seems to encourage a pile-on avalanche effect on questions that propose something unpopular, (especially when posted by staff or CMs) and the constructive criticism can get buried in that avalanche. Related to that is that discussions can get out of control in comments, and unless the comments get moved to chat early in the exchange mods have to resort to fairly heavy-handed pruning or mass deletion of comments, which can inflame resentment and prolong the disagreements. — PM 2Ring 2 mins ago

@Mari-LouA to me the buzzfeed article reads pretty much like gender equality issues are involved as well. It is also point 6 of the OP's question. "Wikipedians began to scour his history on the platform, looking for someone to blame....Much of that blame fell, perhaps predictably, on a woman and a transgender editor. In 2017 ... " and "More recently, Fram had an acrimonious semantic debate with a high-profile transgender editor over whether referring to them as “xe” constituted misgendering" — Sextus Empiricus 2 mins ago

@Trilarion sure, it's not self-governing here. But it certainly is the official feedback-forum and forum to discuss the governance of this site. So you will only find people actually interested in these things - and not people who are content with things as-are and "just" stick to asking and answering. Thus the selection is: here are only people who think something was or should be changed (the occasional exception applies, of course) — planetmaker 2 mins ago

This is the conversation the moderator requested, so it's hard to say that it's going against them. — rockwalrus-stop harming Monica 1 min ago
@MechMK1: I don't know about the first or the third of them, but the second is constructed by taking "him" and replacing the 'h' with an 'x'. So, in terms of length and sound, it reminds you of a pronoun, but it emphasizes that "this pronoun is not actually him". That means a lot less cognitive effort to parse sentences that uses "xim" as a pronoun than sentences which use "grimble". — einpoklum - reinstate Monica 1 min ago

@Mari-LouA Your comment doesn't change the fact that the title of your question doesn't align with the purpose you state. Why defend that mismatch, instead of simply rewording the title of the question? Beyond that, my answer already acknowledged that I agree with asking for clarification. My main point is: to be careful about the part that requests specific actions from the moderators. — GhostCat says Reinstate Monica 23 secs ago
These edits are the same edit. faintsignal proposed an edit but didn't have 2K so it got reviewed, Jenayah reviewed and improved the edit. They got posted at exactly the same time, so I think the order under responses is not really relevant. @einpoklum-reinstateMonica that similarity may make xim less challenging (or more challenging, depending on who you ask) but it doesn't make it more valid. Yeah, I'm keenly aware of all that already, being a moderator on multiple sites. I've been following the drama since well before parts of it became public. I just have trouble seeing how moderators stepping down or curtailing activity on a minority of sites equates to "almost every site saw a decrease in either moderator activity, or actual acting moderators". I think people who use the sites that got hit hardest are imagining that all of SE is on fire when this simply isn't the case. — metasnail 2 mins ago

I think this is personal preference, and "ugh now I have to read things" is a rather poor argument, especially when Closed is bolded and the first word you see (not to mention (Closed) and (Duplicate) are still appended to the post title).
