note to self: suspend Undo for like 18 months
That better be on the first page.
Otherwise, I disapprove.
Anyways... Hi everyone! Been a while since I've been here :)

Hola

Comment sa va?

Kuro tiyo?

Unrelatedly
My brix shat itself.
And I got fed up

1:58 AM
Wat?

@Zizouz212 I was running a gigabyte/celeron brix. Its fanless, and I think it keeps overheating itself to death

Them Brix

@JourneymanGeek So melting, but not melting?

Get a NUC

So. The version I have as a emmc (with windows preinstalled) msata and 2.5 inch drive bays, two ram slots...
@Adam considered it, but this is kinda closer to the price/performance curve for me

1:59 AM
nods smartly without a clue of what people are saying

I don't need a core i3

@Zizouz212 that's when you just randomly star things

@JourneymanGeek Wait what? I thought that was good...

this is a braswell quad core, up to 16gb of ram...

@Zizouz212 Mini PCs

2:00 AM
@Zizouz212 pricier
this was ~100 quid cheaper

@Adam They're good things, aren't they?

Si

Also USB C support (which may be handy)

@JourneymanGeek quid? In English please :)

quid is the universal unit of currency in britisheese.

2:01 AM
Isn't.... that already English? lol

-_-

@Adam quite. I think he means american

I'm Canadian!

@JourneymanGeek Lol I was turning it into a pun
Forced puns are best puns

I'm really confused...

2:02 AM
CHeapest NUC is 459 without ram and storage

So you aren't interested in a NUC because of price?

this was 399 with 2gb of ram emmc and windows.

Ouch

What's a NUC?

Mini PC

2:02 AM
Then why not call it MPC???
That sounds better too!

The brix I have is down to 189

People and weird names for their computers...

NUC = next unit of computing

@Zizouz212 Minecraft PC, Math, Physics, Calculus, could mean anything

@Adam Minecraft PC? There's a PC dedicated to this darn mine craft?

2:04 AM
though IIRC intel has a new, 'standard' motherboard size smaller than mini itx (which ironically was a via invention) tho

Ouch.

Intel invented pretty much every standard mobo form factor out there

ugh. Realtek ethernet
@Adam kindaorta
Actually no

o_O
There's too many smart people here.

2:07 AM
AO Captain Jack!
Meet me by the railroad track!
I talk to much.

@JourneymanGeek wut
AOpen?

They're dead to me at this point

;p
Ahh
Spinoff of acer.
eww

Acer's already a terrible company

2:09 AM
yup
Granted I'm a hardware snob in most aspects

What's wrong with acer?

Ummm

To put it succintly?

Most of their products are generally known to be sub-par compared to other products

2:10 AM
I'm scared

Nearly everything?

Very sub-par

and seriously

Far-par

Who the hell would come here and buy a prebuilt desktop?

2:11 AM
Me?
:D

lol

:-D
>:-D
^_^
Of course I would!
I don't know any of this stuff!
Computers are like magical things! They just... WORK!

Kid, you're in for a lifetime of dissapointment

lol, I know :)

It takes rough men with screwdrivers and true mettle to keep them machines running. They must know fear!

2:14 AM
What's a good well company for laptops then?

Until recently I'd have said lenovo
Right now? Depends on your needs

I'm heading into Grade 12 next year. I don't have many needs :)

Oh, get a HP stream or some other celeron netbook.

HP stream?

The stream is tough as nails, cheap and has a good keyboard
screen is a bit shit but good enough
Also, you can't really game on it. Its a feature not a bug

2:17 AM
Hah, I'll probably get something used. Windows 10 is too ugly for me

lol

(I run windows 10 on all my winboxen)

I know my software, but not really my hardware, quite clearly :)

I love my X220
Last thinkpad with the 'classic' keyboard, fairly light...
Its a corp model (no camera or BT for some reason), and you can't upgrade the wifi card
but I did a few other upgrades - Upped the ram to 8gb yesterday (by shuffling ram around) and swapped the HDD for a SSD

2:19 AM
Let me see what I've got...
iMac - 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 Memory
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB Graphics
and OS X 10.9.5 :)
They haven't said anything.... They're jealous!

looool

:D
I'm proud to be able to program.

Main system is a core i7 3770 @ 3.40ghz x 4 cores, gforce 980TI with 6gb of video ram. 16gb of ram, 256gb Samsung 850 pro SSD + 3TB HGST HDD, 2x 3840x2160 running windows 10....

Wowz
That looks like some serious stuff :)

I actually had a different video card (Gforce 660) and SSD (Samsung 840) when I built this
The SSD is in my laptop, sold the video card

2:26 AM
What's SSD?

._.
Really?

Nah, I know what that is :)
Clearly!
That was a silly question...

That said, nearly every system I have is upgraded somehow ._.
Even the old core 2 laptops, which have had SSDs installed

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro for web development and school work and it's amazing

(also, its hard going back from higher pixel densities...)

2:29 AM
Pixel densities?

Yup
If I use my old laptop - 1280x800 @ 14 inches now
I notice the pixels
Its slightly less bad on my 12 inch and 11 inch 1366x768 laptops
UHD is just.... there are no pixels Only zuuuul

QHD isn't fun to deal with
Too many programs still don't take into account UI resolution

Its kinda bad on UHD too
Its getting better but not quite there

@Undo Did SR have the issue with support requests (or does it still)? If so, how have they handled it?
Right now, a name change doesn't feel right. The problem with technical support (and the broad requirements close reason), seem to be lack of/misunderstood guidance based.
I do agree that [on hold] and [closed] appearing on every other question on the front page is a bit off putting, but it also shows we have quality standards
That's another thing, can we get the High quality questions meta post in front of more users?
I posted a comment on @ArtOfCode's meta post about utilizing the blacklist, a link to ^ in the blacklist popup may be helpful
Of course, that assumes we can find a few key phrases to utilize for that feature

@Andy not when I was a mod

4:58 AM
@Andy Closed a few, but we also had much more traffic overall from day one.
Definitely a lower ratio of them, possibly similar raw volume

Q: Should we edit the sidebar text on the ask page?

ArtOfCodeAs you may have seen, we have an issue with technical support questions. One of the various solutions that has been discussed (proposed in chat and in a meta answer by Andy) is to edit the text in the sidebar of the /questions/ask page. Currently, it doesn't say anything very useful: How to ...

@Undo go dig out the stats :) /tools/question-close-stats

Mods, would it be possible to get a dump of recently deleted Technical Support questions? I can help with the suggestions I mentioned here, but I'm only seeing 12 technical support closes via the API since January 1. That means there are either only 12 (in which case, I think we are over reacting) or they have been deleted.

Any chance you can make those links? I can look at the posts myself that way

just a sec
@Andy Is that any better?

2:56 PM
I can work with that. Thanks @Undo

@Undo, the count of reason for closes from your list
I'll work through the technical ones to see if I can pick out a few phrases. But, the technical and too broad ones are pretty close in scale.
Too broad is split between the default "too broad" and our custom "too broad"

5:30 PM
@Andy Interesting

1 hour later…
6:58 PM
On those 28 technical closes, there aren't any viable phrases we could use for warnings or blacklists. The longest multiple ngrams are 4 words long. Those are "enter image description here", "a second hand laptop" and "I would like to".
If I check for 3 word phrases I get "I have a", "I want to" and a few specs like "4GB DDR3L RAM"
So, my idea of blacklist and warning lists probably isn't going to work for guidance.
I added a the details to my answer

Kinda obnoxious - but it would get the point across
Whenever people join the site
There would be a popup - "This site is not for technical support"
