what we discussed some hours ago...
in Worldbuilders' General Chat, 4 hours ago, by bilbo_pingouin
I had an idea in coordination with the blog, and seeing the series of "creating a realistic world map" questions... since, AFAIK, most of us have some SW dev skills... developping a software to implement the answers... techtonic, fractals for coastline, etc...?

@bilbo_pingouin Ah, right.
I can work out some of the math if need be, but the coding is out of my area.

how about the others?
I mean I can program, but I'm lousy on GUI and graphical things, which would be sad for such program

6:45 PM
@bilbo_pingouin Languages? If I'm doing GUI (which I'm happy to do), I'd prefer C# for WPF
Though we can probably work out a way to integrate a few languages

Well C# is a pain, on Linux...
but I'm mostly familiar with C/C++... with some reasonable knowledge of Java, Python, Perl, ...

@bilbo_pingouin We could try Java. I've not done any GUI work in it, but maybe @Zizouz212 could help us there? I can do other bits of Java, probably.
Or Python: again, no GUI work, but I'm decent at the language.

Hi!
Where am I?
What is this?

There's no chance of me doing C/C++

Somebody help me!
Ah, what can I help you peeps with?

6:49 PM
@Zizouz212 Universe Factory. WB's blog chatroom, where we currently discuss making software.

@Zizouz212 hi! Despite the software discussion currently ongoing, you're in the chat room for coordinating Worldbuilding's blog.

I'm not normally pinged randomly, (unless it's spam pinging)
@MonicaCellio Ah, I heard about that!

In choosing languages, Java might be an acceptable compromise, but I can't do GUIs in it. How about you?

You were pinged? Any idea from what?

@Zizouz212 Hi there.

6:50 PM
@Zizouz212 My fault, mod ping

@ArtOfCode Yep, I can do swing :)

If it works, that works for me

Did you ever get hands on my paint?

@bilbo_pingouin We've got someone who can do GUI in Java
@Zizouz212 Never got a link to it
and I can't find it on GH

Really? Well, here it is (it's the original I did for school, so have fun with the gazillion bugs) drive.google.com/open?id=0B86dtgLaLoHcUnJBQk56NUcwakE

6:52 PM
Java could be a good idea. I like python, and I was meaning to try to do some GUI thing, but I'm not fan of GUI in general, so if we have an expert on-board, then better.

@bilbo_pingouin Tk?

@Zizouz212 is a pain
I tried it once, that was enough

@ArtOfCode Not a pain! Tkinter is actually fun :)

as I wrote, I'm not great fan of GUIs, so I haven't much experience with it

Well, GUIs or not, I'm willing to help out :)
This will actually force me to get into Worldbuilding as well :D

6:57 PM
worldbuilding is great ;)
GUI required for that program
but I haven't much experience with it

It's so quiet...

people are busy on worldbuilding site I guess

Probably :)

and it seems not all are interested in the program

I am! Maybe it means I'll be useful for once in a while :)

7:01 PM
@ArtOfCode Any idea what generating method you'd use to implement the program?

well so far, @HDE226868 said he was in for the maths, @ArtOfCode was interested in the dev, and you, @Zizouz212, apart from me.

So I'll handle the GUI, but out of curiosity, what is the GUI for?

Generating fractal terrain and related things.

The main idea was that on WB, we have a series of questions to make a realistic world map. Some of those answers provide some algorithmic solutions

7:04 PM
and the idea was to implement it in a SW

Alright, so I can get that done in Java, are there scripts that will likely be run?

@bilbo_pingouin Interested yes, relevant to this conversation not so much ;)

I have a friend too who does a lot in Graphics, he does his own stuff most of the time, but he might be interested in this. Should I ping him in?

For me, the more, the merrier

7:15 PM
@Zizouz212 Hey Zizouz, feel free to invite whomever.

@James interested to use? Or to participate in the elaboration?

Alright sure :)

@HDE226868 Don't even know what this thing's about yet :)

@@4821282

@bilbo_pingouin Both, I just don't have much to contribute when it comes to technical design, a developer I am not.

7:16 PM
-_-
;(

AFAIK chat ID's don't go that high
Who you trying to ping?

@Zizouz212 The number of people involved is growing rapidly . . . which is probably a good thing, in this case. Glad to have him/her.

Chat ID, not SO ID

Don't know...

7:17 PM
@Phantom Zizouz212 wants to talk to you here
More TTP Ziz, you're not a chat mod right now

I know, I realized...

Alternatively, you can do @@userid@domain - something like @@4821282@stackoverflow .com

@ArtOfCode thats a neat trick...

It's mod :)

@James Ping anyone, from anywhere, even if they've never visited chat or been in this room before.

7:19 PM
Ok, I didn't think I would miss my diamond so much...

I used it on all of you to get you in here. The big pinging message at the start of the transcript is all mod pings
Anyway, what do we call this software?

@James, now's a chance ;)
gamtyw ?
give a map to your world

@bilbo_pingouin Um?
Ah

MapMyWorld?

I'm not the most creative person in the world... and names is where I struggle the most

7:24 PM
@bilbo_pingouin Naming is hard

@HDE226868 sounds a lot like MapMyRun... and derived, doesn't it?

@bilbo_pingouin Ah, that must have inspired it.

DrawYourMind!
I think of the worse names...

Heh

WorldMapping
Nah, boring.

7:27 PM
Damn, these names are getting creative now :)

Fiatlux
WorldMaker

Universe Factory?

The Map-o-Matic 2015.
@Zizouz212 That's our blog.

Map Factory.

Oh actually?
Map Factory!

7:32 PM
@HDE226868 Does give a nice relation, though

And the name of the chat room.

@Zizouz212 Yep, clicky-link is in the chatroom description -->

Ah, it looks good :)

Map Factory? Is that a name everyone would be happy with?

I'm fine with it :)

7:35 PM
We can always change it. OK:

Sure :)

Send me GH usernames, and I'll add you as collaborators to that repo so you can get commit rights

Zizouz212 :)

In fact, it makes more sense to create an organization (should we want to do other software, in the future) - gimme a mo

Then we need a name for the organization!

7:38 PM
Hey guys, I don't care if y'all plan a software project in here, but if you go back to talking about planning blog posts, please make it obvious. Not gonna try to follow all this. :-)

Universe Factory, just to associate with here and the blog
@MonicaCellio Will do

Sure :)
Who's red but Green?

@Zizouz212 @ArtOfCode Still a good idea lol.

That would be me! :)

@ArtOfCode bilbopingouin

7:40 PM
And a bowl turner?

@bilbo_pingouin Invite sent; @Ziz one for you too

@MonicaCellio How ironic is it that we created this hours ago to focus and not crap up general chat and now...heh.

Interesting!

@James It's... sort of related.
License, an important bit: what do we all think. I'd go MIT, personally, but I'm more than a little bit biased about it.

@James sorry about initiating this... ^^"
@ArtOfCode MIT's good.

7:44 PM
@ArtOfCode I'd go Apache

lol its no biggie, I just appreciate sweet sweet irony.

Don't both licenses allow you to do whatever you want with the code? Just Apache is more verbose?

@James well, also, we wanted to be able to find the blog-coordination posts among other conversations. :-) Anyway, I'm guessing this conversation won't go on forever and that people are going to start using GitHub to build out the actual software (that being what it's good at), so, eh, whatever. If they're still doing this here next week we might need another room. :-)

@Zizouz212 Heh. Reasons? I go MIT because it's simple, permissive, and my grandfather had a hand in making it.
@MonicaCellio Points noted, taken, and hoped that we don't get too chaotic.

@MonicaCellio I'll get people to be quiet after a while, don't worry :D
I'll get my ways :)

7:46 PM
@ArtOfCode I don't want to impede your software project. Have fun! Let us know what you make when you're ready to share.

@MonicaCellio Aye, if it gets confusing... well, chatrooms are free.

We could make another chat for the organisation of the SW
and leave this one free

We could do, yeah
room topic changed to Universe Software: A room for those involved in Worldbuilding's software development team, Universe Factory. [confusion] [java] [software] [stack-traces]

First Message!

ok
I was trying to make one, but I'm not use to it

7:50 PM
Really @Art?

@HDE226868 new software team room, when you're around.
@Zizouz212 Yep :P
So, let's continue our licensing debate. MIT or Apache I believe the suggestions were
@Ziz reasons for Apache?

I just like Apache :)

I have nothing about either
what are the differences?

I'm OK with Apache. They're both very similar, only Apache grants patent rights too.
<see cref='http://choosealicense.com/'/>

Don't they do something with trademarks? Since it's an organization, it may be useful

7:54 PM
They do patents, not trademarks
@Zizouz212 Nominally. It's still a group of individuals, legally. In fact, let me find out what I have to do to have an entity I can assign copyrights to.

Um, yes trademarks. Others can't use our trademarks if we make them. I'm sorry, I just have a thing with other people using stuff like logos and samples...

@Zizouz212 The current avatar is my original creation, no worries there
@Ziz you might want to accept that invitation, too.
Hey, @Vincent and @bowlturner. Interested?

Aren't trademarks separated from SW license?

Should be, yeah

Oh, so I'm not invisible?

7:58 PM
SW?

I mean, the organisation could have a TM on their logo, or possibly a CC-BY-SA, and still have an MIT license for their SW
SW = Software
(HW=hardware)

@bilbo_pingouin Yes, but Apache explicitly disallows use of trademarks

on the code
the organisation is separated

@Vincent Not when looking at the live room :) You can watch the transcript, but if you come into the live room we see you
