@heather Linguistics is one of those subjects that I find fascinating but know basically nothing about. I recognized the term "Great Vowel Shift", and I knew about how using French indicated upper-class status (thanks to a 12th-grade English teacher), but that was about it.

I'm rather obsessed with Tolkien at this point, and reading a lot of his works leads to reading a lot about philology.

I can imagine, yeah.

To be fair, the article really only scratches the surface - it was kind of meant to be an overview that tied together language and myth.
