4:28 PM
oh it's so satisfying to make technology do something useful

2 hours later…
6:00 PM
@JeffSchaller one of these days I'll have a can opener that goes all the way around a can

1 hour later…
7:02 PM
I accidentally ran rm -r one level too high... fortunately I rarely touch that directory and I made a backup a couple of weeks ago. Still... woof.

7:22 PM
@AndrasDeak You should have automatic backups running 24-7.
Assuming it's anything you care about, of course.
As I may have mentioned here, I use Borg Backup. But there are plenty of other options.

If everyone did everything they "should do" the world would be a pretty boring place

I don't do many things I do, probably. But I do run backups.
Because using a computer without backups is like being a trapeze artist without a net.
Everything is fine, provided you don't make a mistake.

I know what you mean, I lost all the files on my company laptop a while back which resulted in my falling to my death.

@jesse_b It's called an analogy. Look it up.

I'm familiar, just wasn't a very good one since those two things don't really compare at all

7:30 PM
@jesse_b It's very much comparable.
Though of course, you're entitled to your opinion.

Although most corporations would agree with you. Sometimes it definitely seems like human life is less valuable than profits
I'm not sure what sort of things you save on your computer but there is definitely nothing on my computer that is worth even 1/100000000000th of a human life...

My analogy in no way suggested that computer files are in any way comparable with a human life. Here endeth the conversation.

Maybe you get a different definition of analogy than me but it is literally defined as a comparison between two things
trapeze artist without a net = dead human, computer without a backup = lost pictures of cats

7:46 PM
NFTs of cats
can't funge those

2 hours later…
9:36 PM
ew.

@ilkkachu The formatting issues?

Oh, I didn't notice it at first... Nice.
I can't reproduce it, though.

Q: New post summary designs on greatest hits now, everywhere else eventually

Ben Kellytl;dr We’re starting a rollout of the new post summary design to many existing screens, starting with greatest hits. This will be a slow rollout, with only one set of related screens changing at a time. What we’re shipping now We’ve built a new component to replace the existing post summary imple...

I never use that page anyway, I always go to "questions"

(I can't reproduce the old-and-new-mixed layout :-)

9:50 PM
@fra-san yeah, I just happened have another tab open with the old format. When I clicked the "2 questions with new activity", that happened ;)
Not sure if I like how the numbers are in a smaller font now (grumble, grumble, changes...)
