@AndrasDeak Are you using LibreOffice as a proxy for MS Office?

2 hours later…
8:22 AM
@FaheemMitha I don't understand the question

@FaheemMitha Definitely. I am definitely. MS Office vs. OpenOffice, well OO is $Free.

Firstly, who keeps starring my comments? It's weird.
@AndrasDeak I thought it was clear. Are you using LibreOffice to make MS documents for MS Office users? Or possibly modify existing MS documents? I trust you're not actually choosing to use it voluntarily.

@FaheemMitha Yes, that. Modifying for administrative fluff tasks.

@AndrasDeak OK. Does it work? I.e. are the people you send your modifications satisfied?

10:10 AM
@AndrasDeak (and anyone else who wants to answer): I don't follow India media very closely, but around a year ago the UN ratified a treaty for the banning of nuclear weapons. Which was promptly objected to and vilified by the "usual suspects". No prizes for guessing who. Anyway, I only found mention of this in one place. Otherwise I would not have known it happened. Namely, Counterpunch.
Just wonder if you are already aware of it.
Incidentally, there is a "news" feed by Google, apparently. Occasionally it has actual news, but mostly it's just complete garbage. Just wondering if anyone knew of an actual non-garbage news feed. It will make depressing reading, but hey, that's the world we live in.
Ratification list in case anyone cares.
This must have been a absolutely huge effort, going back to 2017, but I don't recall hearing a single word about it. Perhaps I should pay more attention to the news.

@FaheemMitha I don't ask and they don't tell. Spreadsheets are probably OK, content is probably OK, formatting is a mess especially for text documents. When I get a form in doc* format its layout is always broken because there's a line or two on a wrong page which ruins the kind of "bespoke formatting with the spacebar" documents everyone writes

@AndrasDeak Well, if they don't complain, it's probably OK then. Also, I applaud your no asking policy. I wasn't suggesting you ask, and it's better you don't. But I thought you might have got comments.

For some reason the more often someone uses word in their job the more likely it is that they use it like a glorified notepad

@AndrasDeak Define "use it like a glorified notepad".

10:27 AM
Need alignment? Use more spaces. Need a dotted line? Hammer the dot key until you have 5 and 1/3 ellipses. Need a header? BIGGER FONTS! Page break? Press enter.

@AndrasDeak Oh. I suppose there are better ways than that, but I wouldn't know.
I suppose even MS Word has actual typesetting facilities. Or so I hear.

@FaheemMitha Yes: tabulators, styles, breakpoints etc. Really basic Word but for some reason most administrators have no idea.

@AndrasDeak Sounds like you know how to use it.
Can all of these be invoked from the keyboard, or is using the menu necessary?

@FaheemMitha libre/openoffice mimics MS, with fewer features. MS word is the least crap among the bunch. But what I'm talking about is word 101.
@FaheemMitha all need a mouse

@AndrasDeak I guess I don't know word 101.
@AndrasDeak So the menu, then? That sucks.

10:33 AM
Yup. But you're not a secretary so I don't expect you to.

@AndrasDeak I do a lot of typesetting, but you know what I use.

@FaheemMitha not necessarily. Tabs can be set with clicking on the top ruler, and inserted with the tab key.

@AndrasDeak Oh, OK. So you can't enter it with \t or similar?

@FaheemMitha yes. But word can even do automatic references and whatnot, though I don't know how
@FaheemMitha why would you want to do that?

@AndrasDeak Yes, I hear it has a lot of features.
@AndrasDeak Because it would be faster? And less stuff to do.

10:35 AM
It's WYSIWYG.
@FaheemMitha faster than a single keypress? Come on.

@AndrasDeak You just said it requires a mouse click too.

To set it up, yes. How would you tell what kind of tab it is and whete to put the tabstop? \t would just insert the tab. That's twice as many keypresses as a tab which inserts a tab.

@AndrasDeak OK.

10:59 AM
@AndrasDeak See also my earlier question about the treaty. Assuming you want to take the time to answer.

I saw your question. I try to ignore the apocalypse so I don't pay attention

@AndrasDeak I suspect the apocalypse will not ignore you. So you were not aware, then?

Tell me, how would stressing out about yet another doomsday scenario improve my life? No, I was not aware. It might have been in the news, I wouldn't know.
In any case I wouldn't think nuclear weapon bans would work so even if I had seen it in the news I'd forget.

11:16 AM
@AndrasDeak Huh? I wasn't asking about a doomsday scenario. I was asking whether you were aware of the treaty.
A treaty. Quite distinct from a Doomsday Scenario.

I figured your "I suspect the apocalypse will not ignore you" was implying disagreement with my stance

But I guess the answer is no. So never mind.
@AndrasDeak I was responding to your comment. My earlier question was apocalypse free.

Whatever

I hadn't heard about the Treaty, at any rate.

12:05 PM
Also, I think it's really good news. At least someone (and apparently a lot of people) are trying to do something to lessen the probability of you know what.
