@AndrasDeak aargh, I’m guessing all the SE designers involved are using super-wide monitors, rotated
either that or they wanted to bring doom-scrolling to SE
coming soon, a front-page redesign where every question is given a 300px-high box

Just for the future, man systemctl or man somethingelse solves most of these problems ;) — drahnr Oct 15 '12 at 21:21

@StephenKitt no, all front-end development is now for mobile phones. Who looks at SE on desktop?!
I blame terdon, by the way
I really, really appreciate that SE seem to have gone back to the model of letting us know about changes and asking for feedback beforehand. I just love seeing posts like this, even in cases where I don't happen to like the changes (and, cherry on top, these seem like a clear improvement!). So, thank you Dan for improving the profile pages and thank you for braving the shoals of Meta and posting this! — terdon Nov 19 at 15:44

@AndrasDeak phones will soon be the size of ultra-wide monitors anyway

It's the circle of life...

a few years ago the receptionist in the office building I worked in spent all day talking on a phablet, and I used to find it really weird, talking into this huge contraption; but now most phones are that size anyway

Last two times I bought a phone it was incredibly difficult to find a phone with OK hardware that wasn't the size of a baking pan
I wonder...
To be honest I saw that post when it was fresh, but I had no idea it would also affect desktop
> In our continued effort to deprecate our mobile views, we’ve turned our attention to the Activity page. We’re planning on shipping the changes next week sometime soon and wanted to show it off first.

Apparently phones are getting bigger? I hadn't noticed that here. They seem to be the normal size.

Either they aren't getting bigger in India, or there were huge to begin with.
5 years ago it was only moderately difficult to find a phone under 5" screen size. Today it's impossible.
By phone I mean Samsung phone, but the tendencies are the same

Yup, at the time of the phablet story above, I had a Nexus 5, which was a nice size (138×70mm). My current phone is the smallest in my immediate family (149×72mm). I had to get a phone for one of my kids this summer, we ended up with a 166×76mm device...
My main criterion for “nice size” is that I can reach any part of the screen with my thumb without shifting the phone in my hand. I could do that with the Nexus 5, but not with any phone I’ve interacted with since.

This is my current phone - amazon.in/gp/product/B07V7ZWFJB
Amazon tells me I purchased it in May 2020.
I'd consider this a reasonable size. Mediumish tending to compact. Certainly not large.

@FaheemMitha 154×80mm, quite a bit larger than my current phone (which I find too large)

@StephenKitt Ah. Well, anything smaller than my current phone, and I think I'd have reading difficulties. But my eyes are quite poor, and likely to get worse.
The Honor phones seem to have disappeared from Amazon India, assuming I'm not doing something wrong. For the last few years they were very visible. But perhaps the US Govt. campaign against Huawei has had an effect.

@AndrasDeak I was gushing over the fact that they were talking to us again. I... hadn't quite appreciated that this would break the profile on non-mobile!

Well, the good news, for me, is that Flipkart still seems to have them.
